It’s not easy being green. That’s what a frog once told Anya on the vision screen; as she walked through town, she knew it to be true. The normals walking around her always stared. Some even covered their faces at the faint stench of her rot. She stared at her feet as she walked, and even though the light bright sun above her shone happily, her mood matched the sad gray cloud monsters. Why couldn’t they be rolling above, bumping into one another until they covered the sun like a blanket trying to smother out the light? They seemed to have abandoned her today, as the sun seemed to be mocking her. Hmph.

As Anya walked, she realized she was being followed. A sleek black kitty cat had been trailing her for a few blocks now, keeping a few cement squares behind. Anya had eyed it over her shoulder every now and then, trying to pay no attention to it. She was no mouse, after all. Maybe it knew she was sad and wanted to be friends! Stopping, she turned around to greet it. She never really met a kitty cat, but if it wanted to cheer her up she would be more than glad to accept. As she bent down to its level, the cat came up to her. She noticed a calico friend has joined it. Aww, cats are so nice. She smiled as she reached her hand out to it. The black’s yellow eyes eyed it curiously, and accepted it with a lick. The other came up too and joined it. Anya decided she was going to bring them home.

Until, they started biting her hand. Anya’s glowing eyes grew wide; she tried to shake them off of her hand but they held on with a furious grip.

They were trying to eat her!

She shook more violently and they fell off from the force. By now a few more cats had join them, seeing the opportunity of a free lunch. Anya quickly got up, confused and scared. Someone must have put a spell on her and changed her into a mouse! She ran right through the group, her bandages flapping behind her. They continued to follow her, more and more joining the crowd. There seemed to be no escape until she realized that she could fly! Flapping her wings, she flew on top of a light post, watching the cats gather at the bottom.

Cats weren't the only thing that had been following Anya. From about a block back, Guinevere had also been trailing the slightly-decomposed Herald, though her intentions were somewhat purer than her new feline foes' were. Guinevere was interested in studying Heralds, and whenever she saw a pair of somewhat special seeming wings, she was sure to stop and survey the person they were attached to. She was nosy, terribly so, and Anya just stuck out so much that she couldn't help but ask and see.

However, when she finally caught up to the other Herald, she had to pause her inquiries at the sight of the situation at hand. "Fiddlesticks," she muttered under her breath, eyeing the light post. By now there were too many cats for Guinevere to fend off without getting hurt, and these were street cats, who knew what diseases they might be carrying? The only thing for it was to try to reach Anya, and Guinevere's wings were more metal than feathers by now. She wasn't sure if they could still be used for flight. However, Anya wasn't that high up, so Guinevere flapped her wings and gave it a go, launching herself to a fire escape nearby and clambering up onto it as quickly as she could. "I beg your pardon!" she called to Anya, "Are you a Herald?"

And then, as an afterthought, "My name is Guinevere! Do you need help?"

Herald? Anya was sure she was transformed into a mouse! She looked down at her red flats how they were connected to her feet and how her feet were connected to her legs and how her legs were… so she wasn’t a mouse, she realized. But then why were the cats still trying to eat her? Maybe the spell was on them.

“They think I’m a mouse!” Anya half squeaked, as the cats mewed below. She sat down and pulled her knees into her chest. She didn’t want to hurt the cat blob, but she didn’t want to be eaten-ed either. She drew her attention to the girl. She met friends with wings before, but she didn’t know if that girl could be classified as like them. She had scissors on her back, not wings. In all reality, Anya’s first impression of her was that she wanted to cut stuff with them. Stuff like construction paper and striiinnggs and hearts out of papeeerrr and

Mamma bat would tell her that that she was being mean. She cut that thought off.

She nodded quickly at the offer for help.

Guinevere called, "I'm going to try to fly you over to the next street over. The bus comes there in about three minutes, so we can get on that to get away if the cats follow you. Just fly after me, okay?" Lovely, more flying. As if she hadn't embarrassed herself enough already. But it was for a Herald, so Guinevere rose to the call of duty and flapped her not-quite-wings once more. She hoped she'd be able to fly long enough to reach the next street.

"Are you ready? On the count of three now!" She bunched up in anticipation, then climbed onto the railing of the fire escape.

"One, two, three!" Guinevere rather disgracefully took off, and, flight pattern lurching alarmingly, set off for the bus stop.

Yes, yes, yes. Anya nodded at the suggestion. It even excited her; she hadn’t crawled into a bus’s mouth and rode inside of it lately. One, two, three! Anya bounced from her spot, her wings spreading out into flight mode. They flapped with ease; at least, if nothing else, her wings were fully intact. The cats looked surprised, even furious, that their mouse lunch was flying away.

“YOU CAN TAKE OUR LIVES BUT YOU CANT TAKE OUR FREEDOM!” Anya yelled back at them, repeating a quote she heard on the tv screen yesterday. She was making a habit of saying at least once every hour, whether loudly or quietly to herself and whether it applied or not. This seemed like near perfect timing.

Anya followed the other lady, her happy gauge filling slowly back up.

Guinevere landed roughly at the bus stop, thrusting her hand in the open door just in time and looking up at the driver. "Hold on, hold on," she panted, fishing fare for two out of her pocket. She heard meowing down the street and she hurried up. Guinevere liked cats, but not feral ones.

Shooing Anya in, she sat down in the back, where her wings would be most out of the way and let out a sigh of relief as the bus drove off, leaving the feline army that Anya had acquired behind. Catching her breath, she said, "Well, that was exciting," brightly, and then looked Anya up and down. "You're falling apart a bit there. Is that normal for you? Should I be taking you to a hospital right now or something? You are a Herald, aren't you?" Anya hadn't exactly answered the first time, but Guinevere bet she was. Gaians with crazy wings and angelic features in this town generally were, although they were usually more put together than this girl she just saved from becoming Fancy Feast.

"Like I said before, I'm Guinevere. Does that kind of thing happen often to you?"
