What do you consider a parent? Like, what traits do you think parents should have?

I like parents who can be a friend of their kid while also remaining the "boss" so to speak.

Parents who are over critical are horrible.

Whoa, deep question. Lemme think...

From a purely practical standpoint, a parent is someone who guides a child from their childhood and into adulthood. I think that good parents never stop that guiding role no matter how much material support they may continue to give (or not) once their child is an adult.

I would hope that a parent would be assertive, yet understanding (kinda goes with what DMS said). Loving and honest. Empathy is a good trait to have, but I realize that not a lot of people have that.

Hmm, I see. You all have great views on this. I was wondering, since I never considered my parents real parents. Just, guardians who had to take care of me, you know? And when I get children of my own someday, I need to know the best way to raise them, yeah?

Why did you feel that way? I've got two adopted sisters and they both think of Mom as a mom instead of anything else (though the oldest one didn't while she was growing up).

I think traits a parent should have are confidence, leadership, caring, protective, and an open mind.

That's an easy question.
A parent should:
admit when they're wrong
always be there when critically needed not (omg you missed my soccer match, more like I got sick in school don't leave me here)
Lend support and wisdom, and don't chase away all new ideas.
Be protective when needed, and allow their children to make certain mistakes
and most of all....
have love for their children, even if they're not theirs

Parents should be understanding and ready for the worst.

But my parents are REALLY annoying since they LOOOVE to be right all the time. Mind you, they're wrong like 80% of the time. And they always pull the "Respect me" BS. I hate that because I get really zealous about certain topics. And I'm ALWAYS right WITH EVIDENCE.

Respect should be something earned, whether it be for a parent, a friend, or anyone else, for that matter. It would be nice if people who expect to be respected acted in respectable ways.

One thing for sure: no parents can be perfect, therefore if they have some traits that their children really dislike, but to the parents it's a natural thing for them, it's up the the children to accept those traits and get used to them in a friendly manner.

And you know, the things that you don't like about your parents are the same things that you're going to do to your kids someday that they won't like about you. Irony 1, You 0.

:< Very very true. I didn't like the way my sibs and i treated my dad before, and now i'm afraid my kids will treat me like that one day.

We can only hope to learn from the things out parents did while raising us. Though some of those things we hated may have been necessary. I don't really have much of a right to talk though since my mom was (and is) an amazing person. My dad on the other hand...well, he's not BAD (people have been through a lot worse). But I wouldn't really call him a good parent.

I would say my dad is a rly good dad, except because of how he was raised, he did have some very annoying traits. But overall, he IS a very good dad, and I hope i can at least be as good as a dad as he was when i have kids one day.

well i think parents should be understanding, patient, caring/loving, fearless, kind, but hard (knows when to lay down discipline), and fun. (i know i can list down a few more things but there just not coming to my mind at the moment).
