"Morrigan," Aesir began, and then remembered to whom he was talking. "Priestess. It is done."

The dark-pelted lion was faintly out of breath, excitement coursing through him as though he had just come away from battle. And he had, after a fashion, but it had been a different kind of battle than he had been used to. This was no battle of physical strength and might, but a battle of wits and cunning, and with the priestess's help he had emerged victorious. He supposed some recognition ought to go to the former Warlord's consort, as she had been the one to actually use the herbs, but in all honesty he didn't consider her of any great value. It was part of why he was returning to the priestess.

"The little idiot has was named Warlord in his stead." Morrigan would know that. She had been among the lions who had reminded the pride of the law which stated that a spouse could step into their dead spouse's role if they so chose.

"She's named me her consort and asked that I be named Warlord in her place." Morrigan would know that, too. It had been part of the plan he'd come up with, after all, and he had disclosed everything to the priestess when he asked for her complicity in his scheme.

Morrigan slowly looked up from the plants that she'd set to slowly burning in a small depression in the face of the stone that she called her workplace. The smoke curled before her face in loops and swirls; her eyes traced the wisps as they rose and grew distorted before vanishing into the aether. No paw did she raise to silence the panting male though normally such interruption of her machinations would warrent that at least--she was far wiser than that. Indeed she knew what had befallen the pride's late ruler, and the efforts of his widow. The male before her, once a thrall, was warlord now. To hush him could warrant death, though death she did not fear.

His words hung in the air as long as it took for the last of the smoke to fade before she finally regarded him. A silent swish of her tail swept clean the ashes of the herbs from where she'd burned them. "The signs are favorable." Her face was passive, brows slightly raised and eyes half lidded. Her nose still tingled from the musky stink of the plant smoke, and she let out a long slow breath to clear her sinuses.

"For now, at least, expect no immediate challangers to your position. As to the far future, the spirits deem not to say." This news was delivered succinctly and she stepped gracefully past the male. "To you I offer my praise and awe, Warlord." She called back over her shoulder almost as an afterthought. She nosed around a small cache and retrieved a mouthful of feathers, which she flung over a flatter part of the stone. As they fluttered to a rest, she sighed and looked back to Aesir. "It would seem my part in this is not done yet...?"

Still high on his personal victory, Aesir launched into a description of the events of that evening, even though he was sure Morrigan knew them. She hadn't been at the actual meal where the Warlord had died, he didn't think. Given her solitary nature, he didn't think it likely she would have attended, even though it was the first time the former Warlord had been viking for some time and his return had been triumphant. At least briefly.

"It was amazing," he said. "And technically all the forms were followed. She said the words just as you told me they must be said, she turned her argument with him into a challenge to his authority, and said she would see him dead and herself as leader. And he didn't take her seriously and accepted her challenge. And then he died!"

In truth, working through poison and similar agents didn't quite sit well with Aesir, but it had been a necessary evil in this instance. He didn't wish to wait out the entirety of his sentence as a Thrall before challenging again for the position. A Thrall, even when he was only temporarily a Thrall, could issue no challenge.

"Thank you," he said, once more recalling himself and to whom he spoke. He knew that this female was behind his success even more than the silly ball of fluff who had actually performed the actions which placed him in the position of Warlord. It also sank in at that point what she had told him of the future.

"It is good to know that. I have some ideas for solidifying my position, and you do play a part in at least one of them." He waited, withholding information to see how much she would guess at, or if her suggestions would prove better than his plans.

ShinosBee
She turned to face him fully, perhaps wondering what he knew. Her plans had never exceeded her station; to be a priestess was more than her job, it was her calling. No one could do better reading the signs than her, and she was content knowing that her purpose and destination in life was in doing her job well. Or so it had been, until she's seen the success of Aesir's plans written in the entrails of some poor beast.

"No thanks are needed. I simply acted as the signs willed me to. I did as fortold, your position was gained. It was as it should be."

She searched his face for a long moment, searched for yet another sign she'd know she'd find. The entrails had spoken of more than their two paths meeting briefly. From the moment she'd agreed to assist the thrall who dreamed above his station her path had become irrevocably wrapped around his. Their two destines were to become one, and not simply for the fact that should his underhandedness be revealed, she too would face the punishment.

"Ask your question of me then, Warlord. Or else be late to your own victory feast." There must be some sacrifice to honor the gods for his victory. She would be the one to make it, if he would just get on with it.

Aesir smiled. Yes. His position was gained. But he knew better than to take it for granted. If there had been signs to indicate that it must be so, then the gods must have taken a special interest in him. He knew they had taken a special interest in Morrigan, for no one else could read the signs as well as she could. It was why he had come to her for a foretelling, confessing his plan to overthrow the former Warlord and hoping that she would not drag him before the lion and see him killed for treachery. A challenge for leadership from a Thrall was treachery, as it would not have been had he been a Captain.

"If I am to lead, I should lead well. That means acknowledging those who make my tasks easier, and rewarding them as I can. That includes the gods, of course, but I believe no small share of the thanks should go to you. You were the one who told me of the the gods' will in this, and provided me with the means to achieve my goal." He would never speak those words again, for to do so would be too dangerous. The pride might, in time, come to admire him for his cunning in acting as he had, but in this unsettled period the knowledge of his methods could prove sufficient to see him overthrown for acting in an underhanded manner.

"I wish to honor you," he said. "I would choose to do so by making you my wife. If that is something you would wish for."

ShinosBee
"As well you should. The gods are whom decided your fate. To forgo their needs might see you lose more than luck or rank." In her mind the gods were very real, and always watching. Certainly they had withdrawn and removed themselves from direct action within the pride, but they were their patrons, their ancestors, and surely no other people offered them such tribute and honor as the Stormborn. They were likely paying more attention now. The drama of mortal lives must serve as glorious entertainment.

Despite expecting it, despite having already accepted it, despite everything his proposal of a sort managed to put her off balance. The part of her that was still an unburdened young thing fluttered like a bird in her ribcage, and it took two long slow breaths for her to regain her composure--though from the outside she'd shown no signs of her turmoil.

"My wishes mean little. From the moment I read the signs for you, I knew my fate as well as yours. Our paths are one. Your realm is that of physical strength, of might, of willpower. Mine is of the etherial, the spiritual, the wise and calm. We will compliment each other well in marriage. So the gods have decided."

In her mind the matter was settled. Neither he nor she could imagine that they loved one another, though few other couples in the pride could claim any different. As with so many before, theirs would be a marriage of convenience and strategy. "You shall have to be rid of the consort of the late warlord then." She felt no jealousy at the thought of another female attending Aesir, and was surprised to feel the sting of pride. Surely she would be a commendable wife enough on her own. And the female might try to retake the leadership if left in a position to get at it long enough.

Aesir nodded. He had not been born into the pride, but he was a Stormborn at heart, and he had shed and spilled enough blood among them that no one could deny that he was, indeed, one of them. The gods of the Stormborn were his gods, and if they meant to make him an avatar for change, then he would be only too happy to fulfill their purpose. It was a good thing, though, that he had someone like Morrigan around to tell him what the gods' purpose was, however, because he knew only his own purpose. It was possible that the two purposes were parallel, but the priestess's reassurances would be good to have. They would also make any changes he instituted more palatable for the pride.

Her two breaths, long and slow as they were, gave Aesir's stomach plenty of time to twist into uncomfortable knots. It was a very good offer, and he knew himself to be a desireable lion - more so now that he was the Warlord. He could have made it to any female in the pride and his troth would have been accepted immediately, but he didn't want any other female. He needed Morrigan. He needed to bind her to him, to make certain she would never reveal their complicity in his rise to power, and to have her spiritual connection to the gods to lend legitimacy to his actions as a leader. With her at his side, many lions would think twice and thrice about challenging his authority.

It wasn't quite the acceptance a young lion might hope for from the lioness he asked to be his bride, but it was sufficient for Aesir. He had no illusions about Morrigan. She was a priestess through and through, and her first loyalty and love would always be the gods, harsh and hard as they were. Fortunately for him, the gods seemed to want her with him, for whatever divine reasons they had. He had his secular reasons. Just the same, it was a little bruising to his pride that her acceptance of his proposal seemed to have little enough to do with him as a lion, and more to do with his role as a tool of the gods.

"I will be rid of her," he said. He didn't want her around any more than Morrigan did, though probably for different reasons. He thought his plan quite cunning, actually. "I had thought to use her to buy the loyalty of one of the more reluctant Captains. Despite the fact that she's useless for anything but breeding, she was the wife of a Warlord, and a rich gift. He cannot choose but to be honored."

ShinosBee
"Indeed. She will be useful for that much at least. And I suppose she will be glad enough to live." He could have killed her to keep her silent, but he'd not. For that he gained some standing with the priestess.

With measured practice she cleaned the area of her work a final time, tucking the feathers away and searching for any remaining mess. Deciding that it was clean enough she sent a final prayer of thanks to the gods for their gifts in her, and her continued success, before she stepped to Aesir's side. Head up, eyes forward and seemingly uninterested, she motioned for him to lead the way.

"Will you announce these changes at your feast? There is enough turmoil that a bit more will not cause undue distress. And better to clear the slate and exert your power now than to leave them wondering at your strength." His bid for the throne had been so fast in light of the other warlord's death, she understood that he would need to exert himself and show he really was the warlord, and not just a farce.

"I couldn't very well kill her," he pointed out. "It would look suspicious."

He sighed and shook his head. Statecraft didn't come to him as naturally as warcraft, but it was the life he'd chosen for himself. Or maybe the gods had chosen it for him. In the latter case, he had really better not mess it up. The gods didn't like to be disappointed.

"I don't know how to make sure she doesn't say anything, though. It's a risk giving her to someone who might challenge me, but it's the best way I can think of to dispose of her. All I can hope is that she's smart enough to realize that if she gives my secrets away, she'll be admitting her own guilt. Already she's known to be an adultress." Not that adultry was such a huge crime, but it was a way to besmirch her character and make her that much less trustworthy in the eyes of the pride. He needed to discredit her as much as he could without humbling her. Maybe he should have just taken her as a saltwife, but that really would have been an insult to her. His forehead wrinkled in thought.

"I had thought to do so, yes. I take it you think it's a good idea?" By which he really wanted to know if that was what the gods wanted him to do. He was still nervous and a little insecure. It wasn't every day a lion performed a coup d'etat.

ShinosBee
"If you fear for her trustworthiness, then leave her to me. I will persuade her." No malice reached her words as she made this offer. She was not a cruel being, but she knew well that now more than ever his fate would be hers. If he lost his position or more likely his life, so would she, undoubtedly. She feared not to die, but given the choice would of course elect to live. "My skills in interpreting omens are great, you have said yourself. If I caution her against unkept secrets, surely she will take the advice to heart. She will not be a problem."

"I do not think it is a bad idea to do these things now. You must make your rank a tangible thing. The pride will understand what may be percieved as a betrayal on the consort's part, but she is not the most honorable nor strong of females. Had she held the position of warlord she would have fallen at the first challenger. They will see that, and think you have done the right thing to remove her from that position."

Of course females were welcome to compete for any rank a male held, but there was still a sort of sexist bias. Many more males were reavers than females, and it was their approval that was most important. The others were fare less likely to challenge Aesir.

She glanced at her to-be-mate and noted his discomfort. Perhaps it was out of some sort of budding fondness, or perhaps it was from a desire to keep his appearances strong and not anxious, but she briefly and gently brushed against his side. They had acted as the gods dictated, and succeded. As far as she was concerned, there was little to fear. Even if death met them at the end of this road, they would be contented in the afterlife for a job well done.

The idea of leaving her to Morrigan was tempting. He had no doubts about the priestess's ability to put the fear of the gods into the girl. On the other paw, he did not want his first act as Warlord to be that of hiding behind a woman, even a priestess of Morrigan's stature. No. This was something he would have to do for himself, though if Morrigan also decided to take her aside and issue her own warning, that might be a very good way to cement his words to her. He grinned, thinking of the benefits to this partnership between himself and Morrigan, and how they were already making themselves apparent.

"I will tell her that she would be doing me an honor and a service by going willingly with the Captain, and that I wish to keep her safe from harm by placing her in a position where she will not be hurt, should the pride not accept my leadership." He thought that might persuade her. "But your way sounds like it would be as helpful. Perhaps we might both find time to speak to her - separately, of course - before the evening's feast.

Morrigan's reasoning was sound. He guessed that most of the Stormborn would assume that was why the consort had asked that he be named Warlord in the first place. No one could ever mistake her for a warrior. No Reaver, she was of Stormborn stock, but only Freeborn. She would not have been able to defend the position she had won herself. And even if she had been able to, she was not well respected, and never had been. Everyone knew she was not the cleverest of lionesses, and although Warlords didn't have to be geniuses, they definitely had to be smarter than she was.

Morrigan's touch startled him, but he didn't flinch away from it. Barely. He was still a little wary of this fey creature who would be his wife. Her connection to the gods seemed so strong, he couldn't help but be a little unnerved. He hoped she would prove to be more normal after they got used to each other as mates. At least she was very attractive, in a strange, wild way.

"You have preparations, I'm sure, and I'll leave you to them," he said turning his head to touch his nose to her shoulder. "I'll see you this evening...wife." He grinned with wicked anticipation.
