Thought I'd start a thread where we could discuss what else we've been watching besides Dr. Who.
Recently, I finished off the Tomorrow People DVD set #2 (contains seasons 3-5). Overall, I felt the stories here were weaker than in set #1. On the plus side, the story "A Man For Emily" has Peter Davison and his ex-wife Sandra Dickinson guest-starring as the space-cowboy siblings Elmer and Emily. On the down side... it's the worst story in the set. cry
Also polished off the Criterion edition of Akira Kurosawa's Ran (mostly excellent, except I think the middle part kind of drags), and Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer (enjoyably funny, with a wonderful ending). Also saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith: not as entertaining as I think it could have been.
Right now I'm in the middle of watching the Full Metal Panic thinpak set. It's got a pretty good combination of comedy and action. I like it!

I've been watching Bleach and Stelvia lately. Also I am part of the local anime club and we watch something different every week.

Never seen either Bleach or Stelvia. These are fansubs?
I miss going to college anime club showings. sad We'd always get the biggest attendance whenever they screened a fansubbed version of Macross: Do You Remember Love. Ah, memories...
Finally finished the Full Metal Panic thinpak, and then went through Crest of the Stars DVD brick release. CotS was interesting, if a bit slow early on. The one thing I hated was the episode intros, which were spoken in a fake alien language. For some they kept making me drowsy. But overall I liked it; it's nice to see some non-mecha sci-fi anime for a change of pace. Now I need to pick up the sequels to both series... gonk
Next up will either be Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 or Slayers Try, which have been sitting around for a while. I just can't seem to get into these. I'll probably stop watching them again the second my Azumanga Daioh DVDs get here.

Bleach is fansub but Stellvia is out. It was licenced by Geneon.
O.O that macross movie is really old... its been out forever.. when did you goto an anime club? Our highest attendance is always when we hold our first meetings after promoting it at the student information fair. This year we had about 50 people come, but now we've dwindled to about 20 or so regulars that always wave at me. (i'm the VP [which is a crap job that has few functions] and the only remainding founder mostly because this is my 5th year at CMSU)

I was dragged (kicking and screaming) to the very first meeting of the U.C. Davis Anime Club, all the way back in 1992. So, yeah, it was a long time ago. sweatdrop All the stuff we used to watch back then as fansubs (Gundam 0083, Record of Lodoss War, Ranma 1/2, the Nuku-Nuku OAV series) was made available domestically years ago.
... except the Macross movie. stare
The only fansub I ever downloaded off the internet was Macross 7. I hate watching stuff that way, because I can't get the video, sound, and subtitles to sync up properly on my computer.

Well, we did show a lot of lousy stuff too. I think I've just conveniently forgotten them. sweatdrop
Being VP and all, do you help decide what to show during the meetings, or does the club just try to figure out what's popular with the crowd and show more of that? I was friends with some of the officers back then, and they just screened whatever tape they had available at the time. They showed Sailor Moon once to a predominantly 18-21 male audience. That didn't go over very well... xd

The entire lenght and bredth of my function, and I know this because I wrote the constitution and also functioned in the position 4 of the 5 years I've been an officer, is to be ther when one of the other officers can't, to function as a go-between with the members and the officers (in other words I KNOW everyone), and to announce what we are watching each night with a brief introduction (which somehow I always seem never to do what with other people "volenteering" and taking my one lousy job that I always get to do).
but yeah, its a mixture of what we have on hand and what people would like to see. We also signed up with a lot of anime companys like bandai and funamation and they give us stuff to show. Its up to the president to decide the final schedual, so really I don;t have to even come to the meetings, but I wouldn't know or be able to talk to any of the members if I didn't come.

Decided to pop into the local Tower Video store today and found out they're having a 40%-off sale on selected Doctor Who titles! Since the U.S. releases are ridiculously overpriced (like... almost as bad as anime prices), at 40% off the titles are at least comparable to more mainstream releases.
I picked up the following: City of Death $19.99 (msrp $34.99) - classic T. Baker tale! But why the hell is this a 2 disc set? Just to jack up the price?! The Mind Robber $14.99 (msrp $24.99) - Troughton story. Never seen it before. Got Zoe... heart Ghost Light $14.99 (msrp $24.99) - McCoy story. Lambasted by many as confusing when it first aired. I liked it. I think.
I think the sale ends on April 9, so there's still quite a bit of time. According to their website, the following titles are also on sale:
Pyramids of Mars - T. Baker. Another goodie. Leisure Hive - T. Baker. Start of the John Nathan Turner era. Bleh. Claws of Axos - Pertwee. Been ages since I've seen it, so I don't remember anything about it. Well, it's got the Master, so it can't be that bad... can it? Horror of Fang Rock - T. Baker. I'm not a Leela fan, and the monster sucked horribly. Needless to say, not one of my favorite stories.

I saw bits of Clone Wars when it showed on Cartoon Network. I wasn't a big fan... it was a little over-the-top for my taste, and I don't feel the Samurai Jack-style animation really suited the show.
On the other hand, I'm a big fan of the Teen Titans. I find it's silliness quite enjoyable!

Oh. don't get me started on the Titans. Seriously. They're becoming my midlife crisis about twenty years too early <.<
The awesomeness of that show defies the constraints of mere mortal words o__o Heading home for a month later today and with a bit of luck Cartoon Network'll be airing season 5 over here so I can get it all on DVD. Obsessive, me? Darn' tootin! =D

Heh, I love the Teen Titans too! Sadly, I missed most of seasons 3 through 5 (although I did manage to catch the Trigon and Doom Patrol episodes). So I really wish they'd release the DVDs faster...
It's a pity they've decided not to continue making new episodes for TT and Justice League. sad

We no longer have cartoon network, and I left seasons 1-4 behind when I packed to come home ;.; Somebody has some serious explaining to do around here... scream
On the flipside you're not missing much if you've only seen the first two seasons. The second was the strongest in my opinion and the animation peaked in the third. Not having seen any of the fifth I couldn't possibly comment but it seems they kind of took their foot off the gas for the fourth o.O
Oh and spoiler anything about the final season in any way and I will hit you. With a croquet mallet. Probably more than once stare .
So to reiterate,
stare
Back to the DVD chat! =D
