There once was a sibling pair of hyenas who got along wonderfully; brother and sister spent most of their time together happily, especially with their parents gone. They both travelled everywhere, took turns hunting, found refuge together, and never argued much if at all.

Then one day, one of them brought something back that would change both of their lives: a son. The coming of the nephew brought shock to the unexpecting sibling, and angered arguments began to be a common thing. It has completely ruptured the caring relationship both had in each other. But why?

User Image

What is their story? Ideally, the questions of whose son it is, what happened with the rogue father or mother, whether the son came as a pup or was found as an adult, how all three members of the "family" feel about each other, and why the son caused such a disturbance will be answered, along with anything else you think is worth telling.

To enter, fill this out; concept and depth favored over length. There will be an extra SoA (or more, depending on number of entries/time) raffled amongst all entrants; it will probably be another unrelated hyena.

Preference of hyenas: If my entry is picked Sister, Nephew/Son, Brother ... if I'm in a raffle, Brother, Sister, Nephew/Son.
Name/meaning of brother: Mkaguzi (Inspector)
Name/meaning of sister: Siri'Kutatulia (Mystery Solved)
Name/meaning of son/nephew: Kuiba (to steal)
Their story:

“I dint do it,” the hyena said sullenly.

Siri’ thought that one day soon she would be driven out of her mind. It was always I dint do it, I dint do nothin’, I ‘unno how it got there, I dint take it, I dint do NOTHIN’. Over and over again, every day. The stupid thieving creature answered even simple questions as though they were interrogations. She could ask him, “Did you see the river, Kuiba?” and he would hunch down and give her that sulky glare, replying “I never saw no river. I dint do it,” in his dull, irritating voice.

It was all her brother’s fault, she thought sourly. They had it all, they were at the top of their game. Lacking the numbers of a pack to back them up, the two hyenas had relied on brains over brawn to make their living. And what a living it was! Packs and prides welcomed them wherever they went. Even gods had been known to call upon Siri’ and Mka’. No mystery, no problem was too big or too little for the pair. They traded their services as problem solvers to beasts in need of help, and were quite happy to do so.

Other hyenas might have been satisfied spending their days running after antelopes and trying to gnaw chunks off them. It was a different kind of hunt that inspired Siri’ and Mka’. The hunt for answers! They had caught murderers and thieves, found lost loves and lost items. Even if the answers they provided weren’t always well received, at least the brother and sister knew they had done a good job.

Until now.

They had been called to investigate a pride’s complaints of theft. Useless stuff, garbage and trinkets, but the hyenas knew well that even petty theft can lead to strife in a small community. When they had tracked the thief to his den, Siri’ had found herself looking at a male hyena with her coloring, her markings. And what had he said?

“I dint do it!”

Even before she had accused him! But Siri’ was less consumed by the mystery of the stolen trash than by the mystery of this hyena’s identity. He was younger than her, he couldn’t be some long lost brother. Although he did look like Mka’ … her suspicions raised, Siri’ had dragged the offender back to where she and her brother made camp, to get a few things straight.

Mka’, usually as cool-headed and analytical a hyena as one could hope to find, had broken down. The yellow mane, the cool blue … he knew those colors. It had been a lead, he said miserably. An informant. Okay, she wasn’t the most savory of hyenas, but he’d been trying to get information out of her. And then she’d given him some fermented fruit. It would have looked funny not to try it, right? And one thing had led to another, and he hadn’t wanted to anger her, so …

Siri’ ground her teeth thinking of Mka’s stupidity. She ground her teeth often now, and lost her temper with increasing regularity. How terribly, unforgivably foolish of him to have been seduced by some … bone-chewing hussy! And how stupid to have LEFT without seeing whether or not said hussy was now in the family way. If he’d gotten hold of wretched Kuiba as a pup, perhaps the brother and sister might have raised him a little better than his undoubtedly idiotic mother had done.

“I dint DO IT, I dint even SEE IT, I dint—”

“Kuiba!” Siri’ roared, her fraying temper snapping. “Shut your driveling mouth!” It wasn’t like her to shout, she was cool, she was in control.

“What’s going on?” Mka’ asked, trotting up to the little scene. He looked worried, as he usually did now. He felt responsible for his thieving, untrustworthy idiot of a son. Even though his son was now an adult, he was still young, and still (Mka’ thought with vanishing hope) moldable. They could turn him into a respectable hyena yet, and then he wouldn’t be torn apart by furious lions someday for taking something he shouldn’t have.

“Your fool son has taken something again. From our CLIENTS!” Siri’ hissed, furious, jerking her head towards the pitiful heap of feathers. Some kind of headdress, some silly gaudy garment that had caught Kuiba’s eye. “We’ll be ruined! They’ll think we’re thieves too, Mka’!”

Mka’s ears drooped. Not again. “Kuiba…” he sighed.

“I tole you,” the brown male grumbled, beginning his story again. “First off, I never even seen that thing in my whole life ‘fore now. Third off, I dint do whatever she sayin’ I did do, which I in fact DINT do —” His whining spiel was interrupted suddenly by Siri’s jaws, clamping down hard on his ear. “YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!” Kuiba screeched, flinching away.

Mka’ stared at his sister in astonishment. They weren’t violent, even when subduing murderers and the like they’d never intentionally tried to hurt their quarry.

Siri’ felt a little astonished herself. She spat the foul taste of Kuiba’s ear from her mouth, glaring at the two males. Kuiba had driven her to it, but they wouldn’t be saddled with the dolt if not for Mka’s stupidity. She hated both the males right now, hated them with a fury that startled her. Then it faded, quickly as it had come, and she turned away from Kuiba with a disgusted snort, walking away. “You return that thing, Mka’. You deal with him. He’s your son, keep him under control!” She snarled over her shoulder as she left.

Preference of hyenas: Brother, Son/Nephew, Sister.
Name/meaning of brother: Bahari ya Sham [['Red Sea' in Swahili.]]
Name/meaning of sister: Uziwa'Povu [['Ocean Bubble' in Swahili.]]
Name/meaning of son/nephew: Taumu [['Shore' in Swahili.]]
Their story:

"Y-you have a kid now?!" Uziwa'Povu nearly yelped out, surprised and almost dumbfounded as she looked down at the young hyena pup sitting down between her brother's feet. Just moments ago, a female of their kind with a pup trailing behind her had come over, taking her brother to the side and talking to him, without any words spoken to her! No hello or anything. Bahari ya Sham and this mysterious female's talking had soon turned to arguing and before they all knew it, Shams had come back over to his sister with the pup.

"Hmph. Yeah, apparently." Shams replied, a small smirk on his face as he gestured down to his son with a paw. The kid looked more like his sister than himself! 'Pup must have gotten it from our parents genes or something..' He thought to himself, aiming his fiery eyed gaze down at the little one to look him over, only to be startled by the pup looking up at him with a smile. "His ma' doesn't want him anymore, so.. so I guess I'll be keeping him around." This pup sure was cute. Not all that surprising to him, though, after all, he was the kid's father. Besides, he couldn't ever bring himself to be that heartless and cold, just leaving his son out on his own to be picked off by whatever predators came along. No, he'd be staying under his dad's careful watch.

"Shams!" His sister growled out, regaining his attention once more and glaring at him, then at the pup. "Do you realize what you just said? You're. keeping. this. kid." She stated, pacing back and forth in front of the father and son. "He's just another mouth to feed! We don't need that. Just go and give him back to that mom of his, alright? Then we can be on our way an-"

"No!" Another voice suddenly squeaked out, both of the adults looking down at the pup between Sham's feet. He had a childish pout on his face and had flopped down onto his stomach onto the ground, wrapping his two front paws over one of his father's feet. He didn't like this lady, yelping and growling and.. and being all mean to his daddy. "Mom told me to stay with daddy!" He barked out, with a rather squeaky pitch to his voice, at Uziwa'Povu. Then, giving the smirk he'd seen his father give to him, he tried to mock his aunt. "So.. so I'm. not. leavin'!"

"Oh?" Bahari ya Sham muttered with a quirked brow, impressed by his son's sudden outburst. His boy had guts, talking back to his aunt like that! Heh, he was okay in Sham's book. "It seems that the little one will be staying with us, sister." Shams said at last, making his point by narrowing his eyes at his sibling. Hearing his words, his son gave an affectionate nuzzle to his leg.

Uziwa'Povu had given a furious glare at her nephew, paws and nails digging into the ground as she held herself back from giving the pup some well-deserved punishment. Well-deserved from her point of view, at least. Baring her teeth threateningly at the nameless male, she whipped her head up to look at her brother. "..Does this other mouth have a name?" 'Povu asked, flicking her ears back in disgust. It wasn't like her brother to be so stupid, so idiotic, so.. so... RRGH! That stupid female bringing this damn pup to them! Her nephew.

Before his father could answer, the young pup butted in. "Mom said my name is Taumu, lady."

Preference of hyenas:
1.) Son/Nephew
2.) Sister
3.) Brother
Name/meaning of brother: Tumbuka (have a hole)
Name/meaning of sister: Badiliwa (be changed)
Name/meaning of son/nephew: Tawakali (have hopes of something)
Their story:

This was unlike his sister. Badiliwa had been missing for weeks and the last that Tumbuka had known, she was out hunting for the two of them. He had been worried sick and tortured every night of the thoughts that ran though his head. He hadn't known what happened to his sibling and companion, but he spent every waking hour frantically searching for her. Tumbuka hadn't even worried about eating very often and had withered a bit since Badiliwa's disappearance. He dedicated every moment in hopes of her return.

Then one day, while he was returning home from his daily search, he noticed motion inside of their home. What the hell?
It dawned on him... Badiliwa? Had she come home?

Tumbuka raced to the den as fast as his legs could carry him. The closer he got, the more the creature in his home was starting to look like his sister. He hoped he wasn't dreaming this, or that his mind wasn't playing tricks on him. Tumbuka wanted this vision to be true!

Not even reaching the opening, he cried out.

"Badiliwa! Where have you been all of these weeks? I have been going insane not knowing where you have been! Never do this to me again!"

It was a tough decision to decide to come home for the female. Her fear of being rejected by her brother had been eating her alive... almost as much as the visions of Badiliwa that Tumbuka had. She had messed up...

Staring at her brother in teary silence, she lifted her fluffy tail that had been hiding the result of a fling. At the time, she hadn't known what she was thinking. It was like someone else had taken over her body, but she loved this little one, who she called Tawakali, more than her brother could ever know. When he was born, Badiliwa was quite excited that her son looked mostly like her. Hopefully it would ease the past, present, and future a bit. It was her son, and hers alone.

"I'm sorry, Tumbuka... I was scared." It was all that the chocolate hyena could squeeze out of her. All she was hoping for was her brother's acceptance, but she wasn't so sure that she'd get it. After all, she disappeared for weeks, made him probably assume she was dead, and came back with a baby that was sure to change everything.

Swiping at the cave wall in anger, he couldn't believe this. His own sister who he could tell everything to; that could tell anything to him (so he thought), had hid a HUGE lie to him. Tumbuka wasn't so sure that he could ever trust her again. This wasn't any white lie... This was serious to him. Why couldn't she just come straight home and tell him? He didn't find it that hard.

"What's so hard about coming home and telling me about this... this... MISTAKE?!?" Although he seemed furious (and he was), he was more torn up on the inside than anything. He felt like he was betrayed. This baby had kept them apart and if he ever saw the male who knocked up his sister, he would have to knock him around... and that was an understatement.

"How dare you call my son a mistake, Tumbuka! Even if that day was a mistake, I will love my son day in and day out!" His response was beyond the desirable; it was in the dirt.

Tumbuka stormed off. It was too much for him to handle in one day. This baby meant that everything he had with his sister would no longer be. Everything that he had planned once he found his sister was destroyed. All of her attention would be on the baby and that's not what he wanted. He was slightly worried that this argument would make her leave again, but after this upset, he wasn't quite sure if he cared or not at this point.

It was that day that ying and yang grew apart.

Preference of hyenas: Sister, Nephew/Son, Brother
Name/meaning of brother: Mafusho'mteketezo // Something Burnt by a Great Fire
Name/meaning of sister: Nyuepe'mteketezo // Great White Fire
Name/meaning of son/nephew: Baridi'mteketezo // Cold Great Fire
(Mteketezo is their family name, so the family members go by their first name only. )

Their story:

Mafusho and Nyuepe were the middle pups in a large litter, their parent's second litter. Though they had many siblings, Mafusho and Nyuepe had always been close, even when they were barely old enough to walk. After their parents passed away – from old age. They had just seen their first grandbaby as well, as the sibling's eldest sister had birthed a litter – Mafusho and Nyuepe stayed closed together. Their family went their separate ways and the pair decided to travel together, just for a little while until they were used to that way of life.

Days turned to months, turned to years and the pair stayed together. It was a fun life, protected and safe, but things changed when Nyuepe fell pregnant. It was a mistake, and one she regretted. The male didn't stay long, and was gone before she could even explain to Mafusho what had happened. After the male had left, Nyuepe struggled to tell her brother, second-guessing herself every time she tried to say. It was only when she was swollen with pups that she admitted what had happened.

She hated to see the disappointment in her brother's eyes though, and so she lied. She had been forced. She didn't want the pups. It wasn't her choice to fling with the male. Mafusho was furious, but not at her. It was the random male that had his fury. He tried to find the male, but Nyuepe gave him false leads. Frustrated, Mafusho started to get angry at his sister for not helping him find the male who forced himself upon her.

Over the years, the lies grew and Nyuepe couldn't tell him the truth, no matter how hard she tried. Baridi was born, the only other pup (a female) died at birth and Nyuepe was horrified at herself for being relieved. Despite this, Baridi was loved by Nyuepe, even though he was a sign of her foolishness and her lies, and tolerated by Mafusho. Mafusho tried to treat his nephew well, but all he saw in the blue and blond was the male who hurt his sister. Therefore he was a little cold to the male, though he tried his hardest to be civil, if nothing else. He often lost his temper at his sister, the built up rage inside him festering.

As Baridi grew to an adult, Nyuepe knew she would have to tell the truth, not only to her brother but to her son who thinks his father was an evil, sinful man. She was dreading telling the men in her life that she had been lying for years, but she was tired of all the deceit and wanted it all to stop. Even if they hated her for it. She would tell them tomorrow. But, as the new day dawned, it was always 'tomorrow' 'tomorrow', never 'today' and the lies continued until she feared she would never tell. But she had to. The truth had to be heard, one way or another.

Preference of hyenas: honestly, I like them all equally, so I'd take what ever. But if a pref is necessary it'd be: son/nephew, brother, sister.
Name/meaning of brother: Kaari {Arch in Finnish}
Name/meaning of sister: Keltainen {Amber in Finnish}
Name/meaning of son/nephew: Ranta`helmi {Shore Gem in Finnish}
Their story: {If I had more time I definently would go into more detail and such with this, but.. since I don't I cannot. x} But thank you for this opportunity. <3 }

The brother and sister team were indeed close, and tight knit like a wool sweater. But on their travels, as they met many other prides and rogues, and had perhaps spent a few nights and days with them, sister-dearest ventured off with a male from said encounters, and shared a rather lovely night with him. Though, of course her naive ways were ignorant to the possibility of him leaving the next morning. But lo-and behold, he had.
Rather embarrassed of the whole thing, she didn't dare tell her dear brother. But of course, it didn't go to unnoticed. The coming weeks Kaari could tell his Kelta dear was becoming, well, rather pudgy. Of course they'd always had plenty to eat, but... goodness, was she really pigging out that much? Not giving too much mind to it, aside from a few playful banters here and there, he had no idea of the possibility of the sweet female to even conceive.
But, of course, she eventually did. This caused quite a shock to Kaari, and made his trust in his sister become questioned. Why hadn't she told him? Of course out of shame, but non-the less, he was very skeptical of their once tight alliance.
The son grew up with them, but had quite a feisty spirit; much like Kaari, which caused many an outbursts and headbutting.
He wasn't afraid to question or go against his uncle's wishes, and fight for what he thought was better for the petite pack. Even if he was considerably younger. Of course, Kelt was torn between the two, and couldn't side with either. The tension was rather high, and made the two siblings bond widen. Kelt wanted peace amongst the family, Kaari wanted to have his alpha rank respected, and Ranta just wanted to be considered. Of course Kaari loves them both, since they are family, but respect is something he holds in high regards. Ranta's rather unsure of his uncle and his choices, leaving there to rarely ever be neutral words between the two.

Preference of hyenas: Sister/nephew/brother
Name/meaning of brother: Damu'michia (Blood spatter)
Name/meaning of sister: Nyekundu'nchi (red earth in Swahili)
Name/meaning of son/nephew: Nchi'kicheko (Earth laughter)
Their story: She hadn't originally meant to hide it from Damu. It had been one little fling on a night where she was lonely, when her brother hadn't yet returned from a small venture off into the unknown. Surely she couldn't wind up pregnant just from something like that, could she? But somehow she had, and one day during Nyekundu and Damu's innumerable teasing contests (always meant in jest, and feelings were never hurt), something was brought up that clued the female Hyena in that... telling her brother about her pregnancy wasn't the wisest thing to do.

They had been resting cheerfully underneath a pleasant tree, exchaning friendly insults and laughter, when Duma's ears flicked back and he stuck his tongue out at his sister. "You know, Nye, if you keep sneaking kills in the middle of the night you're gonna put on so much weight that I might start thinking you're pregnant!"

Nyekundu fought the unexplainable urge to snarl at her brother, something that never happened between them - they had never fought, ever! But something about the way he said it - some little hint in the tone of his voice, some glint in his eyes, perhaps, as he spoke, told her that she had to tread carefully here, or the results wouldn't be pretty. "And if I was?" She asked, carefully keeping her voice light and easy, nudging Duma with a paw.

Duma, not as clued in that there was something 'off' about how his sister was acting, shrugged. "Well, I'd have to hunt down and kill whoever got you pregnant, and that's a messy job - and you're my sister, Nye, I'm not sharing you with anyone," he said, and his tone was dark as he said it, but he nuzzled Nyekundu lovingly, even though the female hyena was feeling rather faint at the moment. She should have seen this coming, really. She had practically raised her brother, after all. When their mother had been killed, she had been the one to take care of her little brother, and he had relied solely on her, and constantly had her attention.

But she had never thought about the idea that he could be so jealous of an unborn pup...

Some weeks later, she snuck off, and stayed away until after she had given birth. Three pups had been born, but it was a difficult and painful labor, and only one had survived. And now, now it was time to face the inevitable. Nyekundu gently nipped her son's ear, a reminder to keep the pup from wandering too far, and approached the den that she and her brother had shared for so long.

"Nye~~~! You're back! You'rebackyou'rebackyou'reback!" Shouted a whirlwind blue of cream and russet, just as Duma tackled his sister to the ground. "I missed you so much, where were you, are you back to stay now?" He asked rapidly, tail wagging excitedly with his questions. Then abruptly, he trailed, off, having spotted the pup that tailed her sister. Rising to his feet, the adult male's hackles raised and he glared at the cub, teeth bared as he prepared to launch at the miniscule intruder, only to have his sister interpose her body between the two, her eyes promising death to the one that would harm her baby, brother or no.

Confused, Duma backed off.

But things were never going to be the same again.

Preference of hyenas: Nephiew, Brother, Sister
Name/meaning of brother: Cha'Tima ("The Caller")
Name/meaning of sister: Makawee ("Mothering")
Name/meaning of son/nephew: Ata'halne ("He interrupts")
Their story:
The two decided on leaving their pack once they’d hit adolescence. It was on neutral terms and there were no hard feelings. They were old enough to make their own way in the world and the pack was growing too large to provide for all the members in their limited territory. Cha’Tima, an ambitious young male sought to start up his own pack far from the territory of his birth. His sister, Makawee, had been his biggest fan growing up. Often times, the pups would fancy themselves as heros of the packs, the hyenas that all the pups would come to talk about in later generations.

When the two finally set out, they found that the world outside was hardly the outstanding place of their childhood fantasies. They soon found themselves fighting off jackals for half-rotten carcasses, dodging crocodiles at watering holes, and running from packs of angry wild dogs who’s territory they’d come too close to. The two were soon forced to concentrate on survival and survival alone.

As Cha grew into a young adult, he began slipping off during the daytime while Makawee rested in whatever shelter they’d managed to find at the time. While Cha was out seeking a potential mate, and perhaps a few extra scraps for his belly, it was Makawee who was fortunate enough to encounter a roving male. Her mating was little more than an act of instinct. The male had left shortly before Cha’s return.

Cha was less than happy when Makawee’s belly began to round out. Where she’d once worshiped the ground he walked on, bowing to his every demand and whim, the female grew outright demanding. She ate more than her fair share of the kills with the excuse that she needed it more than Cha did, she grew snippy, temperamental, and even began demanding her privacy in whatever shelter they happened across on their constant travels.

A single pup was born and while Maka’s temperment had improved, her world now revolved around her young son. As the pup grew, so did the tension among the group. For one, he was a rebellious pup, answering only to his mother. Ata’halne also began showing prowess in both hunting and tracking. Where Cha would return with a plump hare for supper, Ata would return with a young gazelle. Whatever Cha did, Ata did better- and he knew it.

Once Ata had grown into a full adult, he became the self-imposed leader of the small group with his mother insuring that cha minded himself while spoiling the living daylights out of her son. Ata, while unopposed to the thought of creating a pack, is less than responsible. While talented, he has no head for leadership, or guidance. He’s self-centered, very aware of his talents, and a bit of a bully.

Preference of hyenas: Sister, Brother, Nephew
Name/meaning of brother: Dukiza (To secretly listen)
Name/meaning of sister: Ndani’uzulu (Inner Fire)
Name/meaning of son/nephew: Tunduzi (watcher)

Their story: For a hyena who’s name meant “to secretly listen”, Dukiza certainly never did, at least as far as Ndani’uzulu saw. Maybe that’s what the “Secretly” part was about. But she knew for a fact that she was the one of the pair with the common sense, whereas Dukiza did things as his heart lead him.

When it all began, the brother and sister had been two halves that made up a whole. Ndani was a thinker, Dukiza a dreamer, but somehow they seemed to be just what the other needed to balance out their natural weaknesses. They may have been just a sibling pair of rogues, but they thrived because of their solidarity. Then, one night, they came across a female rogue, and although she instantly rubbed Ndani the wrong way, Duzika could see she needed to eat, and persuaded his sister to let her share some of their recent kill. Grudgingly, Ndani agreed, but it seemed that there was nothing this rogue did that didn’t annoy her. She was outspoken for one, which Ndani hated, and although she got along well with Dukiza the same could not be said for his sister. She stayed with them for almost a week, during which she and Ndani had more than one heated argument that almost lead to a fight. Dukiza intervened every time, the only hyena that could make Ndani back down from a confrontation.

Finally, one day when Dukiza was out, an argument began that ended with Ndani driving the rogue female away, threatening to maul her if she didn’t. When Dukiza returned, Ndani couldn’t figure out why he was so upset about this female being gone. After all, she was just a nuisance to Ndani.

More than a year passed, and Ndani had all but forgotten that event so long gone. But one day, a rogue hyena showed up, introducing himself as Tunduzi… and Dukiza’s son. As the astonished siblings listened, Tunduzi told them that he was the only son of his mother, who had died not long ago from an attack by a rogue lion. He had heard all about his father from his mother, however - and about his sister, too. Tunduzi was overjoyed to meet his father for the first time, but he wanted nothing more than to find a way to get rid of Ndani, who he viewed as the responsible one for his mother’s death. After all, if Ndani had allowed his mother to stay with the siblings, she might not have been killed. Four hyenas would have been more than enough to drive off a lone lion, but only he and his mother just weren’t enough. In the end, he’d only barely escaped with his own life.

To make matters worse, Dukiza was now upset with his sister for driving off the female, who it turned out had conceived in the short time she had been with them. And naturally, there was now Tunduzi, conspiring to drive a rift between the two. The closer he and his father became, the more his words could persuade Dukiza. So, while it was Tunduzi’s plan to drive off Ndani as she had done for his mother so long ago, he did so covertly, pretending to accept her as his aunt. But in reality, any moment alone he had with Dukiza, he would try and convince him that his sister was not to be trusted.

That was the beginning. But whatever the future would hold for them remained to be seen.

i'm very sorry about the wait! last week was just crazy for me and i didn't have time to read and think things through. anyways! without further ado, the players for the troubled hyena family will be...

playing the part of the brother... Christopher Johnson!
