Stillness. Silence, except for the rare whistle of the wind, or a soft pawstep.
...or the grumble of an empty stomach.
Frowning, the lone adult female attempted to stifle her stomach while focusing on her other senses. Going so far as to close her eyes, she paused, ears twitching at the slightest sound while her nose sifted through the myriad of scents on the wind. Grass, trees, soil, the very air itself had a scent...and something else. Flashing a brief grin, the female slipped silently into hunting mode, eager to silence her complaining empty stomach as well. Been a while since she'd found large enough prey that she could bring down on her own to fill her stomach, but it seemed that fate was smiling on her today.
The prey was young...and most importantly, alone. Even if temporarily, this future meal was unprotected by anything that would give the hungry female pause. Creeping through the sparse foliage, her eyes locked on the warm body huddled beneath the shrubbery. A young faun. She wouldn't have dared go after an adult on her own; those hooves and antlers could cause some serious damage to a careless predator. The meat was oh so delicious, however, so given the chance to go after a young one while she was alone? Samantha wasn't about to pass up this opportunity, even if she wasn't so hungry already.
Muscles tense, Samantha's body hugged the earth below as she slowly, almost agonizingly so, crept closer to the youngling, circling around behind it for a better approach. The faun seemed only semi-alert, as if it had been napping, believing this to be a safe place for it to let down its guard. Big mistake.
As a cream-colored flash, Samantha was on the youngling in seconds. There was a brief, panic-driven struggle, but after the Krokota had latched her jaws onto the prey's throat, the battle was over. The prey was still twitching a bit as Samantha let go, some of the blood on her fangs dripping into her mouth and down her throat. It tasted so good...but not yet. Tempting as it was, she couldn't feed here.
There were scents of others around here, and she couldn't risk the parents coming back and discovering her with her 'prize.' She needed to leave, take her meal and enjoy it somewhere more private. So, she picked the youngling up by the neck, dragging it in a somewhat awkward sideways movement out of the brush and over the ground to a clearing beneath a tree some distance away. She'd be more likely to notice anyone coming up on her there, and she could rest beneath the tree and enjoy her reward. Along the way, she sent up a silent thanks to the spirits for her 'gift.' It never hurt to be grateful, afterall.
Flopping down with a satisfied grin, Samantha set into her delicious feast, her long tail swishing some of the dirt clear behind her as she enjoyed her treat.

Pathetic, his host was utterly pathetic. No wonder why they were so skinny, that kind of personality wouldn't be able to kill anything with those kind of thoughts. Pst, killing only when needed, who needed that. In Zephar's mind killing was suppose to be a fun sport. Whether it be a small fuzzy animal or one of his own he'd kill just for the fun of it. He wanted to stain the black parts of him with that think crimson liquid.
As the scent of blood reached his nose a small shiver ran down his spine, a shiver of pleasure. He loved this smell, one could say he was quite obsessed with it. Coal black eyes opening up his tail gave a small content swish behind him and then he was off following his nose to this delicious smell.
After a bit of travel, following this heavenly scent the pup reached his destination finding an adult female eating the young faun. Unlike his other half he didn't care what he looked like, knowing he was he no matter what. After all he couldn't change these desires if he wanted to. Zephar gave a small growl, wanting the carcass which the female had. He would attempt to fight for it if need be.

Having sensed the pup's approach, Samantha had lifted her eyes, if nothing else, from her meal to track the movement of her visitor. She held little concern for a lone pup, at least in regards to fight-or-flight responses. She merely watched his approach silently, wondering a bit where he might have come from. She noted from his scent that he was male before he reached her vicinity, but again, had relaxed upon realizing it was merely a pup.
Then, her ear twitched at the tiny growl, muzzle twisting a bit in a mixture of surprise and amusement. Wait...was he challenging her for her kill? Absurd, of course...but she had to give him some credit. Kid had spirit.
Further observations spoke to a story that said spirit got one only so far these days. The kid seemed thin, as if he hadn't been eating so well. Not starving...but not exactly well-fed either. And as far as she could tell, the kid was all alone out here. She'd have smelled a pack if there was one in the area, but she hadn't...only the pup upon his approach.
There was something a bit...odd about the pup's scent. Was he sick? Didn't seem to be though; just hungry. Shrugging it off, Samantha made a quick decision. The adult female rose to her feet, grabbing a hind leg from the faun in her jaws and bracing a front paw against the rest of the corpse. With a savage ripping motion/sound, she tore the leg from her meal, then walked over and dropped it in front of the growling pup.
"Take it, kid. You look like you need it." With that, she turned back to her kill, taking her previous position and resuming feeding. Yeah, she was hungry too, but she'd been eating fairly well as of late. She could have a lighter dinner for once; it wouldn't hurt her any. The pup looked like he could use a good meal, on the other paw.

Zephar watched as she tore the leg off of the carcass. Was she stupid? He didn't need her sympathy he could earn his own meal. Another low growl escaped the pup as he ignored her generosity. The pup had been quite insulted with her act of kindness. Zephar was one who didn't appreciate it. The word 'kind' wasn't even in his vocabulary, if he had one, still it wasn't in his being. Weather she liked it or not they would fight for that faun. Within a moment the little pup began to stalk towards Samantha moving towards her hind quarters. Once he was close enough to the female adult he pounced, aiming to sink his teeth into her flesh.

Samantha raised an eyebrow at the pup's reaction. What was wrong with him? He was hungry; it was food...why not eat it? She snorted derisively at the following growl, cocking an odd look at the pup. "Don't get lippy with me, boy. I'm not exactly the most patient."
She pretended to return to her meal, however, her senses were locked on the odd pup. Perhaps he was ill? She'd heard of some Krokotas who became sick in the head due to being alone too long. Maybe that's what happened to the boy. Would explain why he wasn't acting like any sensible pup would. Her hearing tracked his paws on the earth, sense of smell locked on the boy's scent. Eyes glancing briefly to the side to check his heat signature's position, she affirmed her suspicions. And yet, her tail flicked casually over her haunches.
The moment the pup leaped for her, she revealed the surprise that lay in wait beneath her voluminous tail...a muscular hind leg shot outward, the massive paw aiming for the pup in midair. Samantha held back from using her full strength; it was only a pup after all, even if a crazy one. Still, she wasn't going to just lie here and be attacked either.

A small yip escaped the pup as the paw hit him, sending him flying backwards. Pain shot through his entire body as he rolled across the ground. No whimpers came from him, after all the pup believe that it would be a sign of weakness. He hurt yes, but he forced himself back to his little paws, his legs shaking a bit under him. Just because of one set back didn't mean that he would give up his fight. Even if it wasn't much of a fight at all. It seemed to be taking all of his effort just to stand now. The pup looked up at the adult female giving her a small glare with his coal black eyes. He attempted to growl once more but no sound wanted to come from his throat.

Samantha cringed slightly as the pup hit the ground, worried now that she'd put too much force behind the kick yet. She wasn't going to apologize; he'd attacked her afterall. Still, he was only a child.
Though even children needed discipline once in a while, she supposed.
"I warned you," she muttered, silently relieved to see the pup gather himself up and stand once more. Even if shaky. "I'll give it to ya', kid," she mused, a touch of a smile in her voice, if not on her face. "You got guts. Not a lot of smarts, unfortunately, but ya' got guts. Just don't go and get yourself killed somewhere before you pick up the smarts, eh? And maybe you'll do alright."
There wasn't much to see in those black eyes, but Samantha didn't need to see into them. She could feel the defiance and anger practically radiating from the pup, even without his stance. Maybe he was crazy...maybe not. And if not...just where had he come from and what sort of life had he lived to make him so angry and foolhardy?

(Ponders having Zak take over soon)
It really wasn't like him to accept generosity from others, still he was quite hungry, and his body hurt a ton. The expression upon his face turned from defiance to pain. It hurt his pride to admit defeat and take hand outs. Without one word the pup forced his paws to move, moving towards the leg she had thrown at him before. That was all he'd take, then he'd go off and continue to live by himself. This would be the first and the last time he'd let himself be helped.
Taking the hind leg of the faun between his teeth the small pup dragged it off into the brush. No thanks was given, for the meal, even if he had the words to thank her he wouldn't have done so.

((Whatever works for me! ^^ ))
---
Frowning at the flash of pain crossing the pup's face, Samantha debated her next move. He didn't seem the type to accept condolences...plus, she wasn't sure she wanted to offer them just yet. He had attacked her without provocation, in fact, after her act of generosity. He could still be crazy for all she knew.
Yet...he was still a pup. If a wild, ungrateful one. Something about that tugged at the snarky female's feelings. Deep down. Way deep down. But still there.
"You're welcome," she shot with a wry smirk, returning to the remainder of the faun's carcass. Though she pretended to let the pup go, her senses stayed locked on his position as he disappeared into the brush. She could still hear him, still smell him, still track his heat signature.
...she was just watching long enough to make sure he didn't just abandon her gift. Yeah, that was it.

(( Deciding no to do so, since I like playing Zephar. I just love how Samantha thinks that Zephar is crazy because he is quite insane, I don't think he will ever learn to reason correctly.))
Zephar continued to drag the leg until he found the perfect place to eat it. He would only eat enough to keep the grumbling of his stomach from bothering him. Dipping his paws in the wet red liquid which came from the leg he was quite amused on how it stained the black of his paws red. Perfect he grinned to himself as he thoughtfully chewed on a piece of meat as he continued to play with the blood which leaked out from the leg, smearing what he could on his chest. He would have preferred enough of this stuff to roll in it and bath in it, yet as long as it stained the black of his fur to his favorite color, red. He would be quite content.

((*chuckles* His behavior is illogical and seems counter-productive to survival, at least to Samantha...therefore, he must be crazy. XD ))
---
The pup remained within the range of the rest of her senses, so Samantha relaxed a bit once she realized the pup had started to eat. She couldn't really tell what else he was doing from this distance, but she was satisfied enough for the moment to finish eating her own meal.
There was little left of the carcass when she finished. Not that it had been all that large to begin with, but it was a plentiful meal, even minus one hind leg. And Samantha wasn't about to let such a succulent morsel go to waste, that was for sure. She finished and shoved the bare bones aside, gnawed and licked completely clean, before setting about her own post-hunt bathing ritual. Paws and face first, then the rest of her body, right down to her long, luxurious tail.
Without quite knowing why, and definitely not expecting an answer, she called out to the pup after some time, "Pretty good, isn't it? 'S a rare find, but when you're lucky enough to snag one, it's oh so worth it." She chuckled softly, wondering for a moment if 'crazy' could spread, or if she was just that desperate to have someone to talk to.

Zephar remained in silence as ate the small bit off of the hind leg. The pup rolled in what he had left, some of the skin and meat snagging onto the bone popping out of his back causing some of it to rip and hang off of it. He ignored her as she spoke, his mind off in his own little world.

Hearing no answer from the pup's location, Samantha frowned a bit. She'd finished cleaning herself and stretched before climbing to her feet and shaking out her fur. Not that she'd been expecting a speech or anything in reply, but at the least, figured he'd growl at her like before. Some acknowledgement that he'd heard her and was still alive and all that.
"Hey, kid? You alright? Finish that leg, or ya' need me to help with it?" she smirked, padding over towards the brush where the pup had disappeared earlier. Of course, not expecting the sight before her upon reaching the pup, well...she stared for a bit, one eyebrow raised. He'd eaten some, yes...but what the hell was he doing with the rest of it exactly? Only now, her attention drawn by the torn meat caught and hanging from his back, did she really notice the odd bone-like structure on his spine. Was that a normal Krokotas' rib? It'd been some time since she'd been a pup, so she couldn't remember exactly when or how her own ribs had begun sprouting as she grew. Perhaps he was older than he seemed and they were already starting to emerge.
And yet...something seemed a bit odd about it. More like...it was pointed upwards more than usual. How strange.
And that was all she thought on it, shrugging it off. "Have enough to eat then, I take it?" she quipped, watching the pup's odd behavior as he rolled about on the ground.

Her voice had startled her, for he had been lost within his own thoughts. Zephar had not expected for her to come to him, after all in his mind he believed that he was done interacting with her, but it seems like he was wrong about that belief. A low growl escaped him as he crouched down in front of his meal. If she was going to take it back from him she was clearly mistaken. This was his leg and he was going to do what he chose to do with it. He still hurt but he was not going to let her take away his meal.

Samantha merely rolled her eyes at the response, less amused than before. The act was getting old. "Chill out, kid. I gave it to you; it's yours long as you want it. Just don't make me have to swat that tail of yours for your lip. That'll get you in trouble one day, you know."
Not that she hadn't been a bit snarky at that age...but she knew when to keep her mouth shut. Or she'd learned at least. And for spirits' sake, you didn't smart off to individuals who gave you free food. 'S just not right.
The larger female settled on her haunches, far enough that it was obvious she wasn't making a move on the pup or his food. Tilting her head slightly, she started talking, though whether to the red pup or to herself was up for debate. "So...probably not likely I'm going to get anything out of you, like where you came from. And doesn't seem to be anyone looking after you..."
