Kryptonite is a fictional element from the Superman mythos, originating in the Superman radio show series. Despite the similar name, it has no connection to the real chemical element krypton.

The material is usually shown as having been created from the remains of Superman's native planet of Krypton, and generally has detrimental effects on Superman and other Kryptonians. The name "kryptonite" covers a variety of forms of the substance, but usually refers to the most common "green" form. Kryptonite is one of the few things that can kill Superman.

The word kryptonite is also used in modern speech as a synonym for Achilles' heel, the one weakness of an otherwise invulnerable hero.

In virtually all versions of the Superman mythos, kryptonite is described as having formed through a process of nuclear fusion attendant to the explosion which destroyed the planet Krypton. Some accounts describe the fusion process as a result of the planet-destroying explosion, others as the cause of it, but all agree that the majority of the debris of the planet was converted into kryptonite and propelled into interstellar space by the force of the explosion, with some ultimately reaching Earth and becoming a threat to Superman—and other Kryptonians.

Superman's cells absorb electromagnetic radiation from stars (like Earth's sun). Kryptonite's radioactivity interferes with this semi-photosynthetic process, driving the energy out of his cells in a painful fashion.

Some versions of the adverse effects of kryptonite describe the radiation as affecting the blood chemistry of the victim, causing accelerated effects similar to sickle cell anemia in terrestrial humans, and also causing the skin of the victim to turn green as exposure time increases.

Long-term exposure to kryptonite is said to have the same effects on terrestrial human beings as exposure to other radioactive materials.

Uru is a metal ore in the Marvel Comics universe. It is unique to the Asgard dimension. It resembles stone but it also seems to have metallic properties. It seems able to store most energies, particularly magic.

Uru is highly durable and retains enchantments very well. Its luster has been described as "badly wrought iron". When Uru is enchanted, it becomes much more durable.
Its ductility is unknown. Uru is very resistant to damage, but there is no known instance of Uru being drawn into wire.

Uru is non-sparking and is a highly immalleable metal, often requiring extreme methods to forge it (for example, the heart of a star, or an enchanted forge). Albeit very difficult to forge, weapons and items built in Uru, especially the enchanted ones, are resilient to most forms of damage.

Note: Its physical characteristics are difficult to measure, as most known samples are also heavily magically enchanted (obfuscating observed physical properties). Mjolnir was witnessed to handle enormous amounts of physical impact under extreme temperatures without deformation (e.g. shattering meteors in the cold of space) while Uroc's hand was shattered by subjecting it to liquid nitrogen and then shot by a bullet.

The main property of Uru is its natural affinity to magic. Uru is not only easy to enchant, but also absorbs magic like a sponge, redirecting it and enhancing the natural attributes of his wielder. A suit of Iron Man armor fueled by Uru was able to channel a full blast of lighting from Mjolnir and Odinforce into a blast from its Unibeam.

The symbiotic relationship between Uru and its wielder works both ways: a mystical user can lend to the Uru in his weapon his own strength, in the process making the metal stronger and more resilient.

Due to its durability and ability to hold enchantments, it is often forged into the finest weapons.
