Lachesis watched as the sun encrouched on her sanctum, the warm golden rays creeping farther and farther into the cool, comforting darkness of her den. Her bewitching green eyes narrowed, but she could not avoid the inevitable, and decided that now was as good a time as any to awaken for the day.

Yawning wide, she fell to her side and stretched all four limbs out, jostling the three sleeping pups nestled against her belly. Apate awoke with an annoyed puppy growl, a sound that was entirely too cute to be menacing. Her white daughter yawned loudly, her little fangs already growing bigger then her siblings', a trait she had inherited of her dam.

A trait that made her smile, for Apate was already her favorite. Lachesis knew that a proper mother loved all of her children equally, but deep down, Lachesis adored Apate, where she only tolerated the other two. Yes, she loved them all as only a mother could . . . but . . . Lachesis was no ordinary mother.

However, she was a hungry mother at the moment, and she left the den in a flash, informing Dione of her hunting intentions.

"Granddam, I hunger. Will you watch them for me?" she asked the old femme, who, though graying around the muzzle, still exuded an air of ferocity and regality. Although Dione was a generation or two higher then grandmother to the gray femme, everyone had taken to calling her Granddam, including the pups.

At Dione's nod, Lachesis left the field, heading towards the woods to the north.

The rest of the pack slumbered on in the main den.

Untangling herself from her sisters, Apate watched her mother leave with a sleepy indifference, smelling Granddam outside the den. She would have to be wily to get past her graying grandmother, who had raised many generations of pups and knew all the tricks.

Looking back at her sisters, she pawed at their faces non-too-gently. "Wake up..."

Theo rarely slept and it couldn't be helped, what seemed like, her eternal depressive mood kept her from the relief that sleep would bring. As soon as her eyes closed she was haunted by some negative thought or another and as soon as she thought it she could not help by go over and over it until she felt even worse and the only way then to remove it from her mind was to start on another issue. Thus she dosed, her eyelids only ever kissing or tickling each other; always flickering open and close. Thus perhaps she saw a little more of what she should at time, it was always popular belief that those asleep could not hear or sleep, even those which seemed to be asleep. She watched with little interest as her mother rose, staring down fondly at Apate and then leaving the den; whatever her mother was leaving for she did not care, she made a habit of coming and going as see saw fit, passing on the care of themselves to other members of the pack. She snuffled slightly and burrowed her nose deeper into her forepaws, her eyes flickered and she attempted to grasp at the ever present promise of sleep, though as always it alluded her.

She hovered on sleeps edge, the sensation almost tantalising and the closest thing to bliss she ever experienced. Then a sharp pain stung across her face, catching her ear and cheek and she opened her eyes to see Apate pacing away over to Aima and swipe at her siblings face also. Theo cried out in despair, 'Oh Apate, why couldn't you just leave me alone... I was almost... I almost....' She trailed off, curling into herself, cuddling her stinging face in her forepaws and trying to comfort herself, she mumbled, 'I just wanna sleep.'

Aima was a notoriously deep sleeper. She was practically dead and hardly ever moved or barely even breathed in her sleep. As always her dreams were very lucid and memorable. Memorable because there was always some hint of the beautifully red blood she so adored. Sometimes that would be the focus of the dream and others it would be a tantalizing flicker at the edges of her vision. Her paws twitched in the waking world as she revisited the scene of a small mouse she'd managed to kill the other day. Oh, it had been glorious! The red stuff was everywhere and it had gotten all over everything! It had made her day.

She had a very faint smile on her muzzle when Apate came over and whacked her a good one on the nose. The young grey pup flinched back and sneezed violently before jerking awake. Her eyes snapped up and she looked around, then relaxed when she saw it was only Apate waking them up. Immediately she stopped paying attention and looked to the left, her eyes unfocused as she went back to thinking of her dream. She didn't even notice her mother was there and didn't really even care. Then she remembered long enough she'd been woken up rather rudely to ask "What is it Apate?" Before she looks away again and stares at her favorite spot in the den. It was a little redder than the rest, or so it seemed to her anyway.

Apate turned back towards her sisters and sat with her little tailed curled around her paws, a glint to her green eyes. Aima wasn't even looking at her, and Theo had buried her eyes beneath her paws. Of the two of them, Theo . . . seemed the strangest to her, because she didn't yet understand what ailed her darkly furred sister. Aima proved far easier to understand. She simply had an obsession, one that Apate knew could turn deadly in the future.

Though a pup, she wasn't stupid.

Suddenly she pounced on Theo and chewed on her sister's ear. "Wa' up, wa' up, wa' up!" she growled with an ear between her teeth.

But sleep wasn't something that graced Theo she merely closed her eyes and rested though even that peace was soon destroyed by her sister lunging at her, grabbing her ear and tearing at it playfully though still it earnt a cry, 'Ohhh that hurts,' It was half outraged and half sob as at first she tried to ignore Apate chewing away by burring her head further downwards and bringing her paws up higher around her head but Apate was relentless beckoning for her sister to wake up around a mouthful or ear. Theo's brow furrowed as she strained against the sharp pain that her sisters needle like teeth caused then her depressive mood stemming from her lack of sleep altered as she became growing annoyed at her sibling which had stolen it away from her and now still insisted upon fully awakening, to which Theo knew she'd still find no joy today, as she hadn't any day previously, so why bother, why couldn't she just mope in peace.

A soft warning grow became to rumble in her throat, it which Apate seemed oblivious, her annoyance at her situation now hit eruption point and in one furious frustrated moment she flicked her head violently, not caring about the rough grip Apate had of her ear and the damage it may bring, freeing herself she lunged snapping her jaws at her sister, following her attack she jumped up from where she was sleeping and snapped forcing Apate to back away or be bitten. Her frustration cooled slightly and she stopped her onslaught and stared darkly at her sister, 'Perhaps I don't want to wake up, ever thought about that one you senseless dolt!' Devoid of the fact she never truly slept, thus she was always awake really but that was beyond the point. She stared at her sister for a while longer then her eyes grew dull and sullen once again and her face dropped and her mood altered, her shoulders slumped at which point she then sat down dejectedly and stared vaguely at the floor of the den.

Aima paid little or no attention to her two sisters. They were unimportant to her. All that mattered was the Red. She put one paw on the reddish spot on the floor and spread her toes, vaguely wishing she could feel the familiar hot squish of blood under them and the tangy metallic smell. But alas, there was none.

The young pup's ears pricked forward when she heard a snarl. Her head swiveled around to look at her two siblings. It seemed Theo had gotten angry. Interesting. Her eyes grew big when she saw her attempt to bite Apate and she got to her paws. Her whole demeanor changed at the mere hope that blood would be spilled. Her eyes brightened and she looked more lively than ever. She even leaned forward a little, intent to see it splash across the ground like she hoped it would.

When nothing came of this little spat she sat down dejectedly. She became unfocused once again and let her gaze drift back to the red spot. No blood today it seemed...

Apate snarled at her sister for daring to snap at her, her green eyes sparking with anger. "How can you wake up when you never actually sleep??" the puppy growled, teeth bared at her deranged sister.

She spared a glance to Aima, and saw the sudden excitement enter and leave her other sister's gaze when the possibility of bloodshed had passed. Shaking her head, Apate stared at the ceiling before looking back at her siblings.

"Am I the only sane one here?"

Growling a puppy growl, she stalked from the den and right to Dione, adopting a pitiful tone of voice just for her grandmother.

"Gramma Dione, I think Aima and Theo need some fresh air. They don't look very good," she murmured, a sad look in her eyes. It was all a ploy, because she knew Dione would get them outside, like Apate wanted.

Dione rose to her feet and went to the den, her musings interrupted for now. She would think about the oddities of these puppies later, and whether or not the madness Bia had spoken of in their true grandmother had made it to these young ones...

"Come, little ones. Your sister is right, the sun will be good for you."

Aima remained apathetic through most of this now that there was nothing of interest for her. Her ears did p***k forward at the mention of going outside though. Her usually dull eyes sparkled with interest once again as she snapped her head forward. She knew she probably couldn't get the older wolf to do what she wanted, since Aima rarely spoke anyway and non of the adults seemed to like her very much. Most seemed wary of the small pup, and it didn't help that sometimes she'd sneak out and return home coated in blood.

This didn't matter much to her though. She didn't really need them to get what she desired, which was as usual, the blood. For all intents and purposes she could wander off and kill whatever she pleased to see more of the beautiful red liquid. But in reality she'd probably die since otherwise she wasn't very active. She looked wistful at the fleeting though of going out on her own and collecting as much blood as possible for herself. That way she wouldn't have it washed off her whenever she came back. She could just be covered in it all the time.

She lets out a small sigh and stands up. She trotted towards the den entrance, gave Apate and Dione her customary blank glance, and attempted to just up and leave the den.

Theo took little note of Apate's proclamation, their were various degrees of sanity and she believed everyone had their moments of madness, the statement only seemed to indicate Apate's naivety to Theo, it was a words issued forth simply because she failed to understand the truth behind her sisters condition and her lack of diplomacy with dealing with it. A small smile played upon Theo's lips, yes Apate thought herself some of manipulative player just like their mother, but she'd not be able to manipulate something she did not understand. She continued to stare at the floor of the den when she heard Apate's fake whining voice, Dione bought the lie and urged them outside. Theo twisted to look over her shoulder she stared disdainfully over her shoulder and shot her sister a look, oh how she hated her.

She felt Dione's eyes on her then, digesting her and she turned her head back around away from the mouth of the den, she muttered darkly to herself and then seemly tossed her weight about carelessly to place it standing onto of her legs, she hung her head depressively for a moment then slinked past Dione and Apate, not even sparing her sister a look and instead stared in front at her other sister Aima. Aima always smelt of blood, she seemed to have an unhealthy interested in the vital fluid instead all living animals and very little else. Theo simply wanted nothing to do with either her nor Apate, she just wanted to find somewhere quite, stay out of the way and live quietly and untroubled but she doubted she be so privalaged, no she was cursed with this family.
