An actual addiction which people need help for?

Or an excuse for those who like to sleep around and cheat on their partners?
PostPosted: Mon Sep 20, 2010 1:27 pm

Both. Though it is kinda sad that no one will believe those with a real addiction.

Both.

However, there is a huge difference between cheating/sleeping around and being addicted to sex.

Tiger Woods is not addicted to sex.

Tiger Woods complained of having a sex addiction and that he slept with 15 women over the course of several years.
Someone with a sex addiction might sleep with 15 people in 15 days.

Here's a general definition of sex addiction:

Quote:
Sexual addiction is best described as a progressive intimacy disorder characterized by compulsive sexual thoughts and acts.

Sex addiction is a chemical addiction. When you have sex, your brain releases tons of chemicals that are very pleasurable. Obviously, since pleasurable things are good, you want more of it. Compulsive eaters don't eat to get fat. Drug addicts don't do drugs to destroy their livers. They do it to feel good.

You can define an addiction in several ways, but the these are the main points between enjoying something and it being an addiction: 1) Physio/psychological dependence (withdrawl symptoms from not engaging/consuming/etc), 2) Interferes with daily life (time spent doing something, obsessive/intrusive thoughts, etc).

Note that these aren't actual numbers or statistics, but to give you an idea:
Someone who is addicted to porn might search for it 4-6 hours a day. Every day.
Someone who is addicted to sex might search for partners several hours a day. They can have sex three times in a day and be ready and willing to go again.
When not engaged in the actual activities or searching (for a partner), they're constantly thinking about it - when they can get on the internet or go to a bar again or whatever.

Addiction, or just a really powerful libido?

The first part is more addiction-y. The second part...could be either.

You didn't just read that part of the post, did you? :/

Read the paragraph above it.

The addition of the final paragraph confused me.

You'd already defined an addiction, why would you add things that weakened your definition?

They were just general examples.

No disorder or addiction ever has just ONE criteria. A sex addict is not someone who is capable of having sex four times a day. It can't be simplified like that.

Your examples didn't fit the definition though o.O

4+ encounters a day doesn't indicate dependence or interfere with daily life.

Um . . . having sex four times a day doesn't mean someone has a problem, but it is indicative. It's an indication. A sign. Someone who drinks alcohol before 10 AM isn't necessarily an alcoholic, but drinking early in the day can be one indication of alcoholism.

And 4+ encounters can be very interfering.

Imagine if a person needs to go to a meeting in the evening but they're so obsessed with sex that they simply can't wait any longer and they have to do it *right now* and they end up missing the meeting. And they're constantly late for work because of morning sex.

I feel like you're sort of picking at me. And because I worded my post poorly, it dismisses everything that I said.
That's not what this thread is about and I'm not going to get into an argument over it. Please. . . stick to the topic at hand, not the quality of my examples or their placement within the post.

Trust me, if I were picking on you, you'd know it.

I was seeking clarification, that's all.

*quietly reads everyone's opinions*

What about people that think about sex all the time but can't seem to get any? (because people find them unattractive or whatever) Would they still be defined as sex addicts?

Hookers. In same cases masturbation or porn can satisfy or ease the crave.
