After his grave, grave error of mistaking a well for a swamp (wells were clearly not swamps, swamps did not try to eat you when you jumped into them), Gargantuan had been a little hesitant to leap into just any body of water. Still, the smell of a swamp was something very different, something familiar, and the monster was following the trail as keenly as a hell hound on the scent.

Ironic that such a place would be found right next to the dorms! Not that he'd gone in the dorms yet, a little too timid to just plunge right into an entirely new environment. But swamps were good, swamps were safe! Though he toed the line of the boggy waters for a moment, hesitating, it wouldn't be long before the beast happily lunged into the murky depths.

Shaking himself fully, Gargantuan's snout broke the surface so he could exhale loudly, steam jettisoning from his nostrils while the delicate fins running down his back stretched themselves out with pleasure. Swamps were very good!

And of course, what swamp didn't need a giant water-beast just underneath its depths? Seizing hold of that sudden thought, G decided to play 'moat monster'. The only thing visible were his fins, standing straight up even as he glided this way and that.

Dun nuh.... dun nuh...

Since arriving, Calder had been searching out all the bodies of water on campus. He was, for his own purposes, looking for private places to swim. While he hadn't been around other monsters, he knew there was something very wrong when he went to the swamp behind the Monster Dorms and noticed all the looks he got. In a group of slime, fur, and scales, a pure white horse of flowing snow-white hair and a light prance was far too noticeable. He couldn't even pull of a ghostly aura of white. He was elegant, with a glossy (not matted) coat and long (not sicky thin) hair. In short, he was far from the poster monster for the dormitory and everyone noticed and made a point to notice.

Swimming in the rivers had been fine, but with more students wandering the campus, it was hard to have some privacy and he was just DIEING for a swim. There was something about the pungent waters of a swamp, thick green and murky that really made him sigh when he slipped into the waters. Wadding through, he went a good distance before, looking around, changed into the white, young stallion. His plan? To stay almost submerged in the water and keep anyone from noticing how stunningly white and lovely he looked.

Looking about, he shook his mane and started to wade through the water, going to deeper waters and hoping to find some cover. Maybe a nice log or some thick plants to hide under. So far he found a dead leaf that he went under and lifted his head up to sit atop his head like a little cap. Well, it was something.

The minute vibrations of something entering the water was enough to immediately snag the monster's attention, his massive head breaking the surface for a moment with his ear fins fanned alertly. Snack? It didn't even dawn on him that there were now others he would have to potentially share the swamps with, and, eagerly, Gargantuan did what he could to turn his nine-foot body around to swim closer to the potentially delicious intruder.

The sheen of white caught his attention immediately, and his jaws dropped open in a silly grin. Whatever it was, it looked tasty! Oh... but, maybe he should try to scare it first, and prove that he was, indeed, a real monster? That was why he was here, after all. Though Calder would probably undoubtedly notice the ripples quickly coming his way, who could have imagined the massive set of shoulders that exploded out of the swamp? His mouth was fully gaping now, his top jaw unfolding horizontally to make himself even look more frightening while his big, sucker-tipped hands were outstretched above his head.

That was when G noticed something very strange.

"Pooooonyyyyy." He stated, a bit bewildered even as he relaxed entirely, sinking back into the swamp until only his head was above water. That wasn't what he'd been expecting at all, but the beast seemed a bit thrilled with his discovery, reaching out to touch the soft nose without any regard as to whether or not the pony wanted to be touched.

There were a few things you generally ran into in swampy waters. Large fish, snakes, leeches, and bloated bodies. The typical. Noting to shake your mane at really. There were a few new sea creatures he had been seeing around the campus, but, usually out of water to get to a dorm or to lunch, they seemed far less impressive than they probably would have in the water. So, when he saw the ripple, he was expecting nothing too spectacular. Still, anyone moving towards you under water was enough to make him slowly paddle in the other direction, keeping his green eyes on the fins poking through the water. A big snake? Swamp eel? Maybe a big fish thinking he could be eaten. He hoped not.

What came out sent him splashing and whinnying about. What WAS IT?!! "Don't eat me!" He cried out, a pathetic plea to not have his hind quarters gnawed on. What came out instead was a long Ppppooonnnyyy, and he slowly stopped kicking about to look at the creature. It was a deep green thing, with fins on his head and heavy set jaw. It looked, to put it nicely, simple. It also sounded that way too.

"Pony?" He repeated, looking at himself as if this was all new. The creature hadn't attacked him, but was back in the water, head bobbing above and watching him. Did hit find horses unappetizing? He hoped so! Still, it was such an incorrect term! Before he could even say anything, a heavy hand sat itself on his nose and he was left blinking, utterly stunned that he was being petted! Like a common horse!!!

Still….

…it felt a little nice. He could already feel his eyes close. Maybe he'd let it go on for a few seconds longer....a few more...

NO! He was a KELPIE! Not a pony. No petting. Right?

He pulled back, watching the big creature and his equally massive hand. Sniffing and blowing his nostrils, he held his head up high.

"I'm not a pony. I'm a kelpie." He said, slowly backing up and watching the head bob in the water. "….and you are?" He hoped vegetarian.

Oh! Did the pony not like being pet? G wasn't so sure about that, and a wide, content smile had spread itself over his frog-like face. Strange, huffing growls were rumbling about in the beast's chests, and had he eyes, they probably would have been sparkling. In short, he was delighted with his pony, and was quite content with himself at the moment.

Then he was corrected.

"....Not pony?" G repeated, looking utterly confused. "Keeeeelpiiiii." He had no idea what the difference was, but he was eager to please, slowly nodding his big head for emphasis.

"I'm G." The monster said, stretching his finned fingers out for a moment. "Swamp beast. I go to school." And that was something he was very proud of, straightening himself up a little as though to beam. Well, he did! Did that mean...

"Does pony go to school? Kelpi. Keeeeelpiiiiiiii." The monster hastily corrected himself, shaking his head as though that would help shake the 'bad' title out and keep the good one in!

The slow, concentrated words of the other swamp creature tore down any drive to be angry at him for mistaking him for a pony. For a massive green thing, it was actually downright adorable how he worked hard to say his name (then again, Calder thought leeches were adorable too). Anyone working that hard to be polite couldn't be all that bad, and so far, he wasn't trying to eat him. Things were rather calm in the waters for now, and he wanted to keep it that way. Simple and nice was fine by him, but who knew what the temperament of this great behemoth was like.

It was surprising to find out he was a student, but then he remembered – duh! – he was in the school swamp. Sometimes he got into the water and felt he was someplace entirely. This reminded him that, if a good kelpie chomping was to take place, he had a good chance of getting help…or at least calling out for it.

Okay, he was a little nervous. Then he remembered the pet to his nose and relaxed again.

"I go to school here too." He replied, going slow and deciding not to use big words. He wanted to be nice after all and not confuse the poor thing. "My name is Calder. Cccaaallldddeerrr." He slowly said his name, guessing that G learned better that way. He wondered if G was short for something, but then again, it could just be that it was the name that was best for him to say. Something simple. His parents had been kind.

To keep the conversation going, he thought of something easy to talk about. "Do you like the school? They have lots of rivers. I like to swim here." That worked.

"Cccaaaalllddeeerrr...." The monster repeated after the kelpi slowly, enjoying how easily the name seemed to roll off his thick tongue. So Pony--Kelpi--...Calder? went to school here too! That meant that G had made a friend, and the very knowledge was enough to make him swell with pleasure. He liked friends, adored them and coveted them as well as he could.

He wasn't very good at keeping friends, but that was a different story.

"School is okay." Gargantuan concluded, nodding slowly as though he had never thought about it before. "Big. Big enough for G. Likes it." His tail thrashed happily in the water for a moment, not unlike any content canine. "Swimming fun."

There was a pause, and the monster angled his head at the other for a moment, as though realizing yet again that there was a pony in front of him. A pony! "Oh," The swamp monster suddenly hesitated, "Don't swim in wells. Get stuck 'n then..." Well, it was still really embarrassing, and his ear fins drooped.

"Caaaldeeer like school?" See, he knew how to be polite! The tip of his tail twitched eagerly, and the monster was doing his best to stay patient as he waited for a reply.

It was very easy to talk with G and Calder could paddle in place and talk at the same time, not having to go into some long explanation about his past, what he was, or why he was here. G didn’t go in depth and that meant he didn’t prod into things too far. In fact, Calder didn't think he could with his limited vocabulary and short sentences – if they were even sentences.

"I love swimming, but not in wells. Too shallow and I can't get out of them. I can't climb." He continued to paddle, shaking his hair to get some of it out of his face. "You really are big. I thought you'd eat me when I saw you. Thanks for not eating me. I'm not tasty at all." Which was a lie because his leeches seemed to delight drinking his blood all the time. He supposed if G even tried, he'd like the flavor of kelpie. That wasn't something he wanted to show him.

"This is my first time at school. It's really new to me. I love all the water. I don’t get the fountains in the hallway though. So tiny - and the bathrooms? Those are just weird." He really was getting use to all these modern inventions. He paddled closer to G and looked down, watching G's tail move back and forth.

"G can't climb either!" There was utter delight in his tone to find that they had something in common, and the thanks he received earned a fond, if muted rumble. "G no eat friends. Ccccaallldeeerrr is friend, now." The beast said simply, and he couldn't exactly help but lift his hand up to stroke the side of the pony's neck. He wished he could have been a pony!

Then Calder said some things that hit home with G, and the monster had to gape a little like he thought that no one else had ever considered those things, too! "G knows! G knows!" He said enthusiastically, shaking his big head from side to side. "Got yelled at for tryin' to climb in fountain... but why have fountain if G not supposed to sit in it?"

He was clearly perplexed at the thought. People were silly!

This G really got him and Calder felt that there was little need to put up the big horse form any more. It didn't seem like the big guy was getting ready to use his bones for a toothpick anytime soon. "Exactly! Why have water if you can't use it? I think that we need more pools. I have to go all the way out to my room or the bathroom just to get wet before heading off to class. It takes too long. We need half the rooms flooded. It just makes sense." Not that Calder thought of the fact that if they flooded the rooms a little, then all the classrooms would have to be changed to suit every student's needs.

Moving before G, the kelpie shifted down to his smaller, more humanoid form. Now a slender, average-sized boy, Calder waded in the water and looked up at G. "You really get it, G. This school needs smarter people like us."

...!!

Where had the pony gone?

Gargantuan found himself peering at the small, white-haired boy with open curiosity. ..."Caaaldeeeer?" He seemed to just be confirming it to himself, but when the other called him smart... well. The swamp beast's tail thumped messily in the water a few times. "Think so...?"

No one had ever called him smart before. But he liked the idea of the rooms being flooded! "Could make rooms swamp... Then we wouldn't hafta come out here all da time..."

...This Calder was just so... tiny!
PostPosted: Fri Jan 14, 2011 6:44 pm

Despite being smaller, Calder was still very much the same creature, and jumped up and down, clapping at G's train of thought. "Yes. We should have a big swamp for all the rooms. I know some people live around here, but I don't know how they set it up. When I lived in a river, everyone just moved and shared it all. The entire river was one room for everyone to live. My room is weird. Just me, my pets, the leeches, and my stuff. I wish it had more water." He had to look up more as G was much larger, much taller, when he was in his humanoid form. Still, Calder waded in the water with ease.

"I wish the school was under water or in the swamp. There are no wet classes. I want more water classes. The desks are all dry and I don't get to swim at all during school time. Then the teachers get upset when I trail water in. Like it's MY fault that I wanted to wet my hair in the sink. I get all.....DRY if I don't." He huffed at the idea. He didn't like being too dry. It made him uncomfortable.
