Howl usually looked forward to meetings with magical folk. He looked forward to meetings with wizards, witches, enchantresses, nine lived enchanters and the like. One had to draw a line somewhere, and the great wizard Howl had gone and drawn a rather thick one.

He did not like witches who were witches and pretended not to be. He didn't like people who denied being witches when they really were quite powerful, redheaded ones. It wasn't fair, not fair at all. She had lied to him. She had tricked him. She had charmed him. Him! The greatest wizard in all Ingary or anywhere else.

This meant war.

The 'witch' in question was rather blisfully unaware of her wrongdoing. In her opinion, she'd done nothing wrong. She was not a witch. No. Witch was such a foul word. Personally, Kali much preferred Mage. And so, that was what she was. A mage. Not a witch. And while she hadn't made the distinction when Howl had asked, she hadn't lied by telling him so. Perhaps it was lying by omission, though this was such second nature she was STILL blissfully unaware of what she'd apparently done.

She was aware, however, that she'd laid it on a bit thick at their last meeting. Not that she'd intended to do so. He'd started it! And she was nothing if not competitive.

However, she hadn't thought she'd charmed him so well that he would summon her (or invite, but summon sounded so much...more) to the park. He didn't want a date, did he? He was so young. In hindsight, she should have left well enough alone...

Striding across the grass, however, she spotted his bright blonde head and waved.
"Hello, Howell." She smiled, using the name he clearly did not prefer, mostly to irk him. "Have you been waiting long?"

"Hello, Kalypso." Howl would take his revenge, and take it properly. If she wanted to annoy him by using his full name, he would do the same. "Not long, perhaps ten minutes. I've summoned you here for a purpose," he said, using an air of mystery to his advantage. No, the odds weren't looking good for Howl. He was much younger than the girl he was about to challenge, shorter, though undoubtedly more talented; even if he still had yet to grow into his full power.

"A challenge, really," the young wizard added. "Not a duel, no. Those are petty. One of talent. I enchant something, and then you. No stealing each other's ideas, no using magic against the other, unless it's unintentional. No use of familars including firedemons is allowed."

"Please don't call me Howell," he added rather quickly. "It's Howl. I'll call you Kali, even. We can be frenemies, if you'd like. Let's have our contest. If you win, I have to do what you say. If I win, you have to go on a date with me."

His challenge, she reflected, sounded an awful lot like a duel. She didn't mention this, however, and simply thrust her fists deeper into her pockets. They were currently itching to wrap around his impertinent neck and throttle him for using her full name. And it was a stupid name. Spelled stupid, sounded stupid...Though she HAD used his name. Vengeance deserved, then. Not that she enjoyed it.

She listened quietly to his terms and conditions, face paling slightly at the last. Calling him Howl, she had no problem with, as long as he didn't say her atrocious name ever again. The condition of if he won, however...
A date? Good god, she wasn't a *****, or a creeper, like Tuxedo mask. She had only meant to throw his own back at him when she'd copied his charm. She couldn't possibly date someone as young as he was!!

'Then I guess you'd better win.' Said a snide voice in the back of her mind. Wary of Howl, however, Kali pursed her lips. What if she DID lose, though? Powerful or not, she didn't exactly have the expertise to back up her magic. And then, wasn't this kid also technically married? To Sophie, or something. She made a mental note to check that later.
She really did know that she should back down from the challenge, but pride took hold of her tongue and refused to let her say the words. Instead, she grinned.

"You're on, Howl." She agreed. "Bring it."

"Excellent," Howl said, rolling up his sleeves. "Witch, enchantress, or mage, know that I will not be going easy on you." He wanted that date, if only to taunt her afterward. If Sophie hassled him about it later, he figured he would tell her the truth; he was teaching Kali a lesson. That was all. Really.

"Ladies first," he said, gesturing that she should make the first move. If he lost, it was worth it just to have seen her expression when he had given her his terms. That'd teach her to charm unsuspecting wizards. "Amaze me. I've never seen a Gaian wit--mage's abilities."

After saying his piece, the young wizard seemed to be practicing his spell work. He knew his levels of magical ability were much lower than they had once been. Though his eyes were focused on Kali, his hands moved with adept skill. A dove sat in his cupped hands, until he released it. A canary took it's place. Then a robin. Then a hummingbird--

He sighed.

"Are there snipes on Gaia? I can't seem to summon one."

In truth he was attempting to distract the teenager. Rule ten when it came to duels. Never allow your opponent to distract you.

Ladies first? Well THAT sucked. She had been hoping for an example of what to do. Enchanting things she could do, yes, but most of her energy was directed at more practical uses. Like cleaning up after the kids, or finishing a job. The only frivolous thing she did was create illusions for Katia when reading her bedtime stories, but even THAT had a purpose.

She refused to remove her eyes from Howl's, though she caught what he did with the birds. The spell she had been forming stuttered in the back of her mind and she stared, frowning.

"I don't know what a snipe is..." She was forced to admit, still holding the magic back. "There are snipers. With guns. But-"
Wait a second.
WAIT a FREAKING second!!

Was she...was he really...distracting her!? And she fell for it! She choked on her words and stared, color almost rising to her cheeks. Then, scowling, she gathered her spell and set it free. Howl had given her some idea of what was going on; and she could just use what she already knew. Illusions were good, and she could use THEM. For now, at least.

As she slipped her hands into her pockets, a duplicate of herself stepped out from behind her. Followed, almost immediately, by another. The two 'clones' positioned themselves on either side of Kali, who then proceeded to toss Howl as cute a look as she could muster.

"That wasn't very nice, Howl. Distracting me." She pouted. "I could have messed up!"

"There's no rule saying I can't distract you," Howl pointed out smugly. "Though I will refrain from it in the future." It was only polite, after all. He was rather impressed with her illusion; and there was only one thing to do when he was impressed. "By the way," he said, "I'm changing the terms of our challenge. If I win, you have to let me teach you. And take me for icecream."

She was talented in illusion; Howl would give her something real. With a barely audible word and a gesture, Howl was gone. In his place was a kitten. A pale orange tabby, the wizard reflected with disgust. Couldn't he have made himself something less common? He wound himself around Kali's legs, purring. If cats could smirk, he would have been. "I can also do dogs," said the kitten, before moving away from Kali and standing on its hind legs. It morphed into Howl, who was grinning.

"Your turn."

It was a real pity this wasn't a fight, because then Kali might have known what to do with herself. As it was, however, she was at a bit of a loss as to what she should do. She let the illusions fade away, unable to hide the impressed smile that slid across her face. He could turn into a cat. THAT was neat.

Also making her smile was the change in terms. Taking a kid out for icecream was still date-ish, but held no romantic ties. Which was good.

Crouching down, she lay her hand on the ground, twisting her fingers in the grass. Whispering as she stood up, the grass grew and followed her hand, twisting together and thickening until flowers bloomed beneath her fingers. By the time she stepped away, a sunflower large enough to sit on had opened and was bouncing on it's stem. But then, she thought, this would hardly impress Howl. He knew all about enchanting flowers.

"And you've got to hold my hand, the entire way there," Howl mused aloud, clearly not realizing that he had done so. Or perhaps he was acting, to hide the fact that he was impressed. He had never been very good with flowers, really. That was Sophie's field. Flowers, clothes, and hats. "Can you teach me that?" he asked, trying to sound as indifferent as possible. Then he seemed to remember they were in the middle of a magical challenge. Oops.

He put his hands together as if to clap, and then opened them. Spinning slowly, almost lazily in midair, was a minature version of the sun. Not nearly as bright as it should have been, but it was obvious what the wizard had meant it to be.

"If you get to add conditions, so do I." Kali countered. "If I win, you have to do whatever I say, while wearing a DRESS." She huffed, clearly not pleased with the 'holding hands' demand.

She was about to reply to his OTHER, more reasonable request, when Howl held the sun in his hands. Quite literally, actually. She watched as her magical sunflower twitched, then stretched to face the miniature sun in Howl's hands. It wasn't as big, or as bright, as the real thing...but it was closer, and a lot more impressive.

"Nice." She admitted, twirling her finger. As she did, a small circle of clouds gathered, darkening as they grew larger. When she set them free, they flew at Howl, obstructing the view of his miniature sun. She couldn't help it, she knew, and technically it wasn't breaking any rules. She hadn't attacked HOWL, she had attacked the view of his sun. And making clouds wasn't stealing his idea, because his idea had been creating the sun, not creating weather. Not that her clouds were anywhere near as impressive as his sun. They were mere illusions. That sun..well, it was near enough the real thing to be fan-freaking-tastically amazing.

Howl's eyes widened in horror. He went pale at the thought of himself in a dress. "That's hardly fair!" he complained, sticking his lower lip out and pouting, crossing his arms for added effect. "I didn't tell you you had to do anything embarassing and-- Do you know that Sophie would never let me forget that? She'd laugh at me!"

He frowned, and watched as the clouds blocked his sun. He dropped the spell with a sigh. "Even if you do win," he grumbled, "I am not wearing a dress." Never. Not in a million years. Not even if she paid him well. Not even--not even if it were Sophie asking him. Not even then.

He admired her skill with illusion, though Howl himself preferred the real thing. With a gesture, music started to play. He smirked at her, silently vowing for revenge, before giving the older a polite bow. "Dance with me?" he asked.

Kali's only response to his complaints was a wide, sly grin, remniscient of the cheshire cat. She knew very well that Sophie, and a number of others, would never let him live it down.
That was the point.

She didn't bother to point out that learning from and going on a date with a six year old was just as embarassing, and bowed back at Howl.

"I'd be honored. But I don't dance with guys that are shorter than me..." As she spoke, her own body shrunk. One of the only spells to alter a body that she knew of was to change someone's height. Usually, she made herself taller, though she had on some occasions made herself short enough to spy on people and sneak into places she should not have been. It was this direction that she took this time, stopping once she stood at a solid 4'6. Looking up ever so slightly at Howl, she offered her hand.

"Now I think it will work."

Howl frowned at her lack of response. If he did lose, and she tried to put him in a dress, he'd just turn her into a toad. He decided a politer approach would be the best solution. "Please don't make me wear a dress?" he asked, on the verge of begging. "I'll do anything else for you if I lose--" He hesitated. "I'll let you dye my hair," he decided. If he didn't like the color, he could always fix it... He hoped.

He stared as his frenemy shrunk in front of him. Envy sparked in his eyes. That was a spell he needed! "Teach me how to do that!" he said excitedly, forgetting the challenge altogether. The music stopped mid note. "Teach me that. I've wanted to learn that spell since they did this to me," he gestured at himself. "Please?" he added.

He was completely oblivious to the fact that he hadn't taken his turn.

Kali beamed at the mention of hairdye. She would truly love to see him with bright red hair, but stayed tight lipped; that is, until he began to ask for her to teach him. She saw her chance, and dove for it.

"I'll teach you if you teach me, and we call this contest a draw. Right?" This way, neither of them was humiliated, and neither would resort to curses for revenge.

Deciding that she should probably add a bit more incentive for the 'six' year old, she grinned. "If you agree, we'll go out for ice cream to celebrate."

Howl did so like draws. It meant he didn't have to admit losing. It meant he wouldn't have to wear a dress! He wouldn't have to have his hair dyed some horrid color. He nodded in agreement.

"Deal," he said with a smile. "You teach me what you know about flowers and height, and I'll teach you about--well. Anything you want to learn about, really." His eyes widened in absolute childish glee, another smile lighting up his features. "Ice cream, really?"

"Let's go!"
