It was a bit strange to be out in the roguelands for the first time, but Anwar would be lying if he said he wasn't slightly disappointed. He'd wondered as a cub, what it would be like beyond the borders of his home, climbing a twisted tree at the outermost point that he dared to travel to so he could lay in the branches and stare out over the strange place that lay beyond. Curiosity was rampant in the young cub, but so too had paitence been. Endless, endless paitence, waiting for the time to be right. He knew better than to wander off alone when he was so little. Even now he was aware of his being on the smaller side, a trait he'd inherited from his mother. But that didn't matter as much as his age did. With his mane coming in, and his quest at his pawtips, it was perfectly acceptable for him to be out here now. All his wondering and waiting...and now...

...now he knew it was a lot like being home. The skies were still blue, the grass still green, the sun still warm across his fur. The only difference was the fact that he was not familair with this land underfoot. But that would change. He would learn his way around out here as well, and find his way home when his task was complete. When he found his fallen star, and only she would suffice for his quest. Anyone could bring back a female. How many would return with a star? Not a one, of that he was certain. Only with his seer-brother's help would he accomplish this, but in the end it was his words that would sway her. She would follow him willingly, no Kajira for him. A banu who loved him would be far more useful than a frightened rebel after all. Fear bred hatred and mistrust...but a girl who loved him would give him everything he asked for and eagerly too. That was the better way to rule... and that was the only reason for the quiet, friendly facade he lived behind. Easier to trust someone who seemed unthreatening after all... and he certainly seemed that. Especailly being slightly small...a trait he wasn't entirely happy with. But no matter. He would make use of what he'd been given. Mind over matter indeed.

User ImageThere were undeniably better ways to wake up after a really, really pleasurable evening than alone. When Gintare woke and found that she had done so, however, she kept her fuming to a minimum. As much as she might have enjoyed an early morning romp in the water followed by an early morning romp of another sort, she was secretly grateful that he had left in the night and spared her the awkward farewell scene. He had been good - the best she could remember having, in fact - but that wasn't enough to make the independent little miss want to settle down and set up housekeeping.

Or so she told herself as she drank from the pool where she and Arindam had met by felicitous serendipity the night before. The water tasted sweeter now than it had then, even though she had been certain the day before that no water could ever be sweeter. Perhaps it was because of the delightful memories she now associated with it. Perhaps in her travels she could return here, and maybe "accidentally" run into Arindam again.

"Stop it," she told herself sharply.

Honestly, he had just been another lion. Better than most at certain things, but not worth getting all doe-eyed over. What she needed was to meet someone new, who would remind her of Arindam's relative unimportance in the grand scheme of things. If she was going to let herself go weak in the knees like this, she might as well just walk into the Ukuucha'Wafalme lands and say, "Take me, please."

Which gave her an idea. She wouldn't be begging to be taken, of course, but there was always a pad or two lurking around and willing to try. Those Ukuucha boys knew what they were doing, and could be just what she needed to put Arindam and his thrilling growls out of her mind. She finished her drink and set off in the direction she had just come from, willing the males of the pride to be on the prowl.

A faint flicker of motion caught his eye as he paused to look around himself, seeking to familiarize everything in his mind. How embaressing would it be if he got lost on his way back? No, he would never do something so foolish. Best to be prepared, to pay attention, to use his head. It was, after all, his strongest attribute. Cunning and clever, it would make up for being small and not so strong. So far it had managed, but that was no reason to relax. So long as he stayed sharp, he could keep himself one pawstep ahead of everyone else...especially his brothers. He needed to be special, needed to be the one to stand out. His father would have to notice him then...

But this particular movement was easy to settle into a very specific sort of shape. A lioness. A bit older than he was, she seemed to be a fully-grown adult rather than a youngling on the cusp of reaching the proper age. Interesting that there would be a female so close to the territories. Did she not know of the pride he hailed from? Was she unaware of the fate she tempted by wandering so near?

Perhaps she wouldn't remain ignorant for long, Anwar mused to himself, his dark crimson gaze following her movements. Especially with so many young lions out seeking to prove themselves. For most, any female would suffice. He was the one with a plan. Should he warn her? It was hardly his business, he didn't really care all that much to be honest. But...if one of his brothers found her...and returned to the pride in so short a time...

A low snarl clawed at his throat as his ears laid back. Only his father could draw such a degree of emotion from the young schemer. If someone else earned the powerful male's approval...if Anwar were sentanced to being overlooked yet again...no. No that would simply not be acceptable. He would warn her. But for his own sake, not for hers.

"Good morning, miss," he called as he padded towards her, making no effort to hide himself. His expression was mild and affable, his body language utterly unthreatening. Anwar was not the sort to go looking for a fight... especially not one he had no way of guessing the result of. Just because females weren't supposed to be warriors, according to their pride, he'd seen how strong Zarha was, noted the marks mother Otep dared to leave on his father when she struggled in her foolish and pointless rebellion. He had no desire to aquire such marks himself, there was so little point in it.

Tare had been watching the young male approach for sometime. He was the first she'd seen so far, and he somehow managed to look even younger than most of the males she had encountered in her previous passes through this area. Perhaps it was just that he was more slightly built. As he drew nearer it was readily apparent that he was neither weak nor sickly. Just small. He probably had some sort of need to prove himself because of it, and she could definitely turn that to her advantage.

"Good morning," she called back.

Tare doubted he was actually considered a pad yet, but she didn't want to insult him by calling him a pesar. Her knowledge of the pride was limited to what she'd been told by males in her past, some of whom had wanted to add her to their harem, and others who had just wanted to enjoy her favors for a brief period of time. In truth, she preferred the latter. She'd had to convince males that she wasn't going with them before, and sometimes it got violent.

Fighting with males was frightening, though she was reluctant to admit it. Someday she would meet one who wouldn't believe she was too much trouble to bother with. She had no doubt that if Arindam had been a part of the Ukuucha and decided he wanted to capture her as a banu, there would have been little she could do to stop him. Gods, depending on when he'd brought the matter up, she might have trotted along at his heels happily. Which was just disgusting. She had been fortunate he left.

"Out looking for banu, are you?" she asked.

Anwar actually blinked when she asked if he was out looking for banu. So...she knew? She was this close to a pride where most males would happily capture her, willing or not, and she was aware of what she was doing? Someone was either confident or stupid. He didn't care to decide which purely off of a few short words...but it seemed to him that both adjectives could easily go paw in paw with each other. Well, if she knew then there was little point in playing around, was there?

"Yes, actually," he said flatly, the sweet friendly attempt at a demonor relaxing into his more natural cool expression. "I thought you might not be aware of where you are currently located, but it certainly seems that you think you know what you are doing," the young lion told her flatly. Perhaps his particular turn of phrase might seem a touch insulting, but he didn't much care really. He'd no desire to take this female as his own, it would be too much trouble to make his current plans work with her dragged along, possibly kicking and screaming for all he knew. But others might decide they'd like her, she was quite pretty. Actually, some of the males might decide their quest-standard was 'female', in which case her looks and opinions hardly would matter at all.

"I, like all the other Pesar of my generation, am on my first quest in order to become a proper Pad. And by all, I do mean a rather significant number," he added pointedly. It wouldn't do for one of his brothers to steal her and return to the pride in a mere day or two! Not at all! Perhaps she would get the hint? Or would he need to be more blatent about it?

Tare watched with some interest as the younger male's expression lost its cheer and became colder. Interesting. She wondered what it was she'd said to turn him off so quickly. Perhaps it was because she knew about his pride, though there was no reason for that to get him all tweaked. Maybe he thought that if she knew about it, she ought to be more careful, or more respectful or something. Careful, she always was, but respect had to be earned.

"And I suppose you thought to warn me of the danger I'm in and the risk I run by coming through these lands," she said, grinning. She was just on the point of laughter, not at all insulted by the way he had phrased things. "It's sweet of you, but I've been passing by this way for seasons, and none of your pride has ever managed to make it worth my while to come back and become a banu."

Which was not to say that several hadn't tried. The first had been when she was a little younger than this pad-to-be, and he had also been on his first quest. The silly creature had been pale and weak and not really to Tare's taste at all, but he had been a fount of knowledge about the Ukuucha, which had proved to be useful information in her future dealings. If nothing else, it was always fun to put males off-balance by using terms like pesar and pad and banu.

"I have to say, from the way you talk, I wonder if I ought to be insulted. You certainly don't seem very interested in claiming me. Perhaps I've grown too old to be of interest to you young things. What a terrible shame." It was obvious that she was not the least bit offended. After all, she was little more than a young adult, really, even if she had been made more mature by a lifetime of providing for herself.

Anwar watched her coolly. She truly did not seem to appreciate the gravity of her situation. He shouldn't care, and didn't really. His only concern was that if a younger brother found her and returned...then he would not be first. Then his father would be impressed by another and he would stand even less of a chance.

"Not all ask you understand," he informed her. His father, he knew, was one of these. A great and powerful lion, he ruled his harem with a heavy paw and commanded respect from all who saw him. "As for myself," the young lion continued at her comment about being 'old', freely allowing a note of disdain to enter his tone, "I am not easily satisfied by just any female. Unlike some I have goals to obtain beyond wooing the first tail I see."

It seemed to be how many worked on their first quest. Go out, grab a girl, go home. The end. Utter stupidity. One should know better what one was getting in to than to clock a girl over the head and drag her unconscious body back.

Tare smiled at Anwar in a way which made it clear she wasn't really smiling to be friendly or charming. She certainly wasn't doing it to soften her next words any.

"I understand," she replied. "And I am somewhat less than afraid of half-grown boys parading around trying to win Daddy's approval by dragging home the first cat they see which hasn't got balls."

She hadn't meant to be antagonistic, but this adolescent's patronising tone had rubbed her fur the wrong way and gotten under her skin. She wanted to put him in his place and remind him - and all males by association - that they were not truly the gods' gift to this world.

Tare suddenly felt a great deal less remorseful about her words when the striped male continued to speak and more or less told her that she was beneath him, and failed to measure up to his standards. Her muzzle wrinkled in the beginnings of an offended snarl, though the accompanying sound was never uttered. Just showing the tips of her canines was about as aggressive as she planned to get with this arrogant arse.

"Hah. A green boy like you with standards so high, I bet it hasn't occurred to you that we lionesses have standards, too. Before you go talking about satisfaction, you might have a care. I sincerely doubt that for all your arrogance you have even a little experience in giving a female satisfaction."

It was juvenile to get into this, but her feelings were already smarting from waking up alone after what had been the most enjoyable lay she could recall. Follow that with this pissant's casual dismissal of her as a desirable feline, and the day for Gintare had been going badly indeed. She had definitely reached the point where she just wanted to hurt men.

Well, she really did seem to share his sentiments, to some degree, regarding some of the others in his pride who were on their quest. Her scorn mirrored his, though it was mildly irritating that it seemed to be directed towards him. He was reluctant to get into a situation that could possibly escalate to actual violence, he didn't seem to be reacting in the way he'd expected and what was happening now certainly was not conducive to the goals he'd had in mind when he began this encounter. Perhaps it was time to switch tactics? Instead of putting out his front that he was a noble and proud member of a superior pride warning an innocent, he let his ears slide back, his shoulders hunching slightly. It was only a small shift in his stance, but it brought his body language to a different cue, something almost submissive. He'd seen it on a few of the females before, hoping to avoid some manner of punishment. The posture would serve him well, he was certain.

"Anyone who wasn't a fool would know that females have aspirations as well," Anwar replied, a small snort accompanying the statement at the thought of Zarha. How could anyone who met her have even the slightest doubt. "What I meant was... that I'm looking for a specific girl, not just a specific type of girl. You're just not my Star, I'm sure any other male would try to drag you back." His voice wasn't exactly apologetic, but his tone certainly wasn't making their conversation any more heated than it already was. This could easily be a learning experience for him, he'd never dealt with a Kajira before and he knew without a doubt that that was the type of female this was. It was...interesting.

Gintare watched the striped adolescent's demeanor change with some confusion. Although she had never been one to willingly submit herself to another - not in that fashion anyway - Gintare recognized all the signs of submission. What she didn't understand was what had brought it on in this male. Hurt feelings were one thing, and she could understand that, but she'd never heard of a male of the Ukuucha'Wafalme behaving so. She decided that he was up to something.

"You might be surprised by how many fools there are in the world, boy," Gintare remarked dryly. She didn't go on to say that she considered him one of them, but her tone ought to have implied something of the sort.

She also refused to be mollified by Anwar's justifications. He'd said what he'd said, and her temper was all in a twist because of it. And given the low esteem in which he held his age mates, it wasn't exactly a compliment that he considered her to be to their tastes - as opposed to his more discerning ones.

"Ran away from you, did she?" she asked. She had never heard of a lion looking for a specific female on his quest for banu. For most of them it was their first time outside of the pride, which meant they couldn't possibly know of one lioness in particular who resided beyond the borders that they wanted to bring back. Not unless she'd dwelt at some point among the Ukuucha and somehow managed to leave.

"What makes you think she'll want to come back with you?" Not that it would make a difference, she knew. The willingness of the lionesses was completely immaterial to these lions, cocky pricks that they were.

Anwar did not appreciate being called a fool, and any idiot could have discerned that as much was implied by this stupid kajira's words. She was just asking to be dragged off, she really was. Hauled kicking and clawing and screaming back to be in some moron's harem until she was beaten into submission or just beaten to death. Well, she'd get what was coming to her soon enough. It was hardly his problem any more...except it was. Because if someone did find and drag her back, then he would be the first to return. Anwar had to find a way to be quicker about it. He had to. So that included getting this stupid female to go somewhere else.

"No, she didn't run away from me," he sighed, turning utterly bored crimson eyes upon the lioness, "I've been waiting for my chance to go and find Star and bring her home ever since I first met her as a cub. I know what it means to be lonely, I thought I'd ask if she wanted to have a home again." So there. Even if the bit about meeting her wasn't exactly true. He'd seen the star fall, his brother's visions assuring him that the distant pinpoint of light had become a small lioness with fur like the moon. She was alone, or she had been, lost from the sky where she'd lived before. Of course she would desire a place to call home once again.

"But, truely, you really ought to consider being elsewhere yourself," Anwar added pointedly. Maybe if he annoyed her enough she'd get the picture. It seemed like a viable option, especially when trying to reason with the crazy female didn't appear to be working.

Gintare had her doubts, but she wasn't going to pry any more into this pesar's life. Or was he a pad now? She couldn't remember if males remained pesars until they brought back their first captured banu, or if pad was just the default title for adult males in the Ukuucha'Wafalme. It wasn't something with which she often concerned herself, all things considered. Tare had no inclination to become part of that pride, and so anything she did know about it was trivial. The only reason she bothered to remember any of these little facts was that it was occasionally entertaining to shock young males - and older ones - with her knowledge of the pride.

"Whatever you say, pesar," she said, deciding to err on the side of insulting, since her mood was foul and this encounter had not done much to improve it. Of course, it had put Arindam from her mind, which had been the point of this exercise. She'd meant to put him from her mind by proving to herself that he wasn't as good at the sexing as she remembered him being, but just working herself into a righteous fury with males in general would suffice.

"Good luck finding Star. I do hope, for your sake, that she finds you pleasant company. It would be a shame for your quest to depend so much on her good will, and then go awry at the last because you offered offense or some trifle like that."

Tare gave Anwar another one of her insincere, too-friendly smiles and turned away from him, walking with a deliberate swing in her step. She was still determined to show herself that Arindam had been no better than average. Well, maybe a little better, but certainly not worth getting upset over.

Anwar actually chuckled as she walked away, a dark mirthless sound that seemed more akin to bored amusement then cruel, though it was really quite difficult to tell. "Oh, don't you worry about me," he purred at the retreating female, a cold smirk working its way across his features as he watched her go. She was leaving, which was what he'd wanted to begin with. And while the entire encounter hadn't gone quite as he'd intended, it had ended with the desired result.

As far as he was concerned, the ends justified the means. His eyes were dark, almost calculating perhaps, as he watched her go before, with a dismissive flick of his pale-tufted tail he himself turned to continue on his way. Star was waiting for him after all. Waiting for the ever so carefully planned words that would have her soft and mailable between his clever paws.

No, no she would not refuse him. He knew enough to find the perfect manner in which to get his way. Even this stupid kajira had given him what he wanted in the end. That cold smirk still curving at his maw, Anwar padded calmly off to go and rejoin his little brother.

(I'd call this done, unless she takes offense at his last remark or something)
