x x x x x WHO: Alex, Aphismet, Rivener & Zul
x x x x x WHEN: Before noon
x x x x x WHERE: Durem Regional Hospital
x x x x x WEATHER: Deceptively warm

The ride to the hospital was tense and filled with the white static of silence. Alex had burned tracks out of the Lab and high-tailed it to Durem to pick up her bewildered charge from work without warning. Neil was more than accommodating and Zul...it went without saying. Upon the tearful news that the Scorpion had been shot and was in the hospital, the demon's content expression had slipped off, revealing a tightness that Alex could only describe as the most worry she'd ever seen him wear. It was an expression he maintained as the truck hummed within the quiet cab, only cracking once they pulled into the hospital parking lot.

The woman took in a quivering breath. "Are you okay...?" she dared to ask, her green eyes still wet with her own shock and fear after all that had transpired.

"No," was the demon's quiet response, and they left it at that.

Alex seized the bouquet she had picked up at Zul's behest and bounded out of the truck, the Frei following suit and on her heels. As the doors to the hospital whisked open to admit the two, she put her hand behind her and felt his warm gloved one take it; hand in hand, they ran through the hallways and walked briskly where they were yelled, taking no warning as a detriment. The two had a mission, had somewhere to be, visiting someone who was more important to the two of them than rules. It was narrow-minded of them, perhaps, but there'd be no telling them as much.

Once they were on the proper floor, it didn't take long to find the correct room. The staff had only to take one look at Zul and were able to point them in the direction of the Scorpion, as undoubtedly he was one of the stranger patients they'd had. Alex finally released the demon's hand as they stood in front of the correct door, the well-loved last name written in block letters to the side. She pressed the flowers into Zul's now freed fingers and rapped her knuckles against the door, looking to the Frei. "Give me just a minute..." she asked of him quietly.

The demon nodded his understanding, the brilliant red roses curled against his arm.

Alex let herself into the room first, her eyes first finding Aphismet. With a small, pained sound, she moved into the room and turned her eyes to Rivener to see if he was awake...and what type of condition he was in.

Aphismet had called just about everyone he thought Rivener knew, giving them news of the Scorpion's accident. For last, though, he'd saved the call he'd dreaded most (apart from the one to Eiry and Isi, of course). Alex had seemed so shaken on the phone, but when the door opened to admit the black-haired Italian, Aphismet couldn't hide his surprise: he hadn't expected her to drop everything and rush over. Without Zul? Eyebrows bunching in sympathy, he glanced over at his charge even as he got to his feet and walked to Alex's side, putting an arm about her shoulders. "...Thanks for coming," he whispered.

Rivener was awake, though it was hard to tell. After the first night, the Scorpion had quickly realized that here, he had nothing to do to distract him from the crippling thoughts in his head. There was nowhere to hide his failing self-control, and Aphismet rarely left anymore. So to preserve whatever shred of dignity he'd had left, Rivener had taken to pretending he was catatonic. He stared out the window for hours on end, didn't look at anyone, didn't think of anything past what he saw outside. Two birds. He could hear a police siren. Clouds that looked like drumsticks.

The door opening and closing was a regular occurrence, as doctors and nurses came to adjust his meds (hard for them to gauge with the toxin-resistant Scorpion), change his bandages, check on his stitches... When it opened this time, Rivener hadn't looked over. Only when he heard Aphismet get up and whisper something did Riv realize this might not be hospital staff.

The red eyes slid over slowly to peek at the visitor... Alex! For a split second Rivener's eyes widened, but he quickly turned his head away again. He pressed his lips together tightly, scrunched his fist in the blanket... Alex, alone. Of course.

"Of course," she squeezed out in a pained tone, slipping one arm around the chef's back and kissing his cheek softly. "Thanks for calling..." Alex gave him a smile that wasn't entirely strong, her eyes still heavy with the threat of tears as she gave him a squeeze and looked to the Scorpion. Carefully removing her arm from Aphismet, she moved to one side of the bed - towards the window - and gave Rivener an emotionally tight smile.

"Hey, big guy," she remarked softly, extending a hand to brush some of Rivener's hair aside. "Sorry for the unannounced visit. I just - wanted to see you, make sure..." Alex bit her bottom lip, her eyelashes batting as a tear swelled and was caught within them. Lifting her fingers to brush it aside, she continued in a slightly wavering voice, "--you know, that you were up for company." She licked her lips and smiled, glancing towards the door as it opened slowly. When she caught Zul's eyes peeking around the edge, she nodded. It looked like Rivener was awake and in some condition to be seen.

The demon breathed in deeply, the scent of medicine and roses making his head a bit light before he floated in and closed the door quietly behind him. Zul's bright blue eyes, now slightly darker with his worry, rested upon the bed-bound form of Rivener for the first time in a long time. He wasn't sure what he was expecting to feel, but he wasn't quite prepared for it; there was a rush, a feeling of tingly warmth in his arms that was akin to excitement like when they'd first met, and on the edges of that, a keen sense of being guarded. The Frei didn't expect Rivener to want to see him, but be damned if he'd let the Sigel call the shots right now.

Floating closer to the bed, he didn't look away from the Scorpion, each motion almost too-slow and methodical as he carefully put the roses on the side stand where water and personal effects were usually placed. Zul tilted his tri-horned head, plucking one flower from the dozen without looking at them, the other hand moving of its own accord to smooth his fingers along Rivener's cheek, only coming to a comfortable rest once he had the Scorpion's jaw cupped against his palm.

He said nothing. Having been the last to speak, it didn't seem right to be the one to break the self-imposed silence. Not after all that had happened to him through the in-between.

Aphi smiled sheepishly at Alex when she spoke. He gave her a faint nod, cheeks flushing lightly at that sympathetic kiss. When she moved around to the other side of the bed, the white-haired man sat once more on the edge of the chair, lacing his fingers and hiding his mouth behind them. It was breaking his heart to see all this, Rivener acting so withdrawn, Alex looking so upset...

Rivener was NOT ready to face anyone, least of all Zul's guardian. Seeing her reminded Riv of HIM, and that just couldn't... He wasn't ready! But Alex was persistent, moving to the window side of the bed and brushing hair out of his tired face... Even the frown he wore, defensive and tense, shook in the face of her kindness. He wouldn't be able to keep this up long, he wished she'd just go already!

Out of the corner of his eyes, which he'd stubbornly angled out the window throughout, he saw her nodding towards the door. The action froze his blood, stopped his breath, paralyzed his heart. She couldn't possibly mean-?

Almost as slowly as Zul was advancing into the room, Rivener turned his head. The look of absolute disbelief, anguished hope, and shock on his face was the most emotion Aphismet had seen since the Beach Party. Rivener's vision swam as his lungs fought for air, his chest ached... This couldn't be real. This couldn't be real!

He was so close now, Rivener could have reached out and touched him! It was raw fear that kept the Sigel from doing just that. Fear that it WASN'T real, that the painkillers were making him hallucinate or something. But when those fingers touched his cheek, those bright blue eyes looking at him so intently, there was no doubt about the reality of it all anymore. Rivener felt his eyes well up dangerously, his breath hurrying back to him in a staccato hiccup. He shouldn't cry! No way, not in front of all these people! Clenching his eyes and his jaw tightly, brows furrowing deeply, Rivener tried to control himself, shaking under the demon-frei's touch. He couldn't stop the first tears from rolling down his cheeks, and he hated himself for it.

"Z-Zul?" he asked shakily, refusing to open his eyes.

Aphismet swallowed lightly and got up again, subtly motioning Alex over. ...This certainly looked like something they shouldn't be eavesdropping on. "...Let's wait just outside the door, okay?" he whispered to her once she was within ear's reach.

It would certainly take more than stubbornness to chase off the equally-stubborn Italian, especially when she was as attached as she was. Sure, Rivener and Alex had spoken mostly in passing and weren't even friends by the standard term, but she cared deeply for him and his Guardian. She would bend over backwards for him, and if he thought he could chase her away with a scowl, well. Didn't he just have another thing coming?

When the Sigel looked towards the door, however, and all those...those emotions played out on his face, Alex felt her chest tighten. The woman wasn't sure she'd even seen half the emotions Rivener was displaying before, making her feel very suddenly like she was treading on something sacred. She took a step back, another - Aphismet's whisper reached her ears, and with another baffled glance at the two, she nodded and went to the chef. Taking his hand, she was content to exit the room and let those two figure out what was going on - something that she was certain she had no concept of.

Zul saw no one but Rivener. They could have screamed at him and he would not have heard anything, as all his senses seemed to have locked on the face that he once looked to for strength and guidance. A face now lined with tears and a flush that said he was trying so hard to keep those tears inside.

The demon didn't understand. He hadn't understood the coldness he felt when Rivener had told him about wanting more, and he didn't understand why the Sigel was upset now. One thing had been for certain - Zul really knew little in the ways of love and all that it meant. He'd made his own guesses by now and had a better grasp of how he felt for the Scorpion, but this...he wasn't expecting tears. Not in his wildest delusions would he have thought to see his proud, vain love cooped up in a hospital bed and stammering his name.

His expression finally softened out of worry and into a more intimate, fonder look, his eyes resuming some of their sky-blue clarity. Wordless still, Zul put the hand holding the rose against the Sigel's pillow, the other still cupped against his jaw. He put his 'weight' into his hands and leaned over the bed railing, pressing his lips to Rivener's without so much as a warning. The Scorpion tasted of blood, tears and upset that hid his more darker taste, a bitter concoction that did not deter the demon from unabashedly kissing him with a familiarity and intensity that betrayed their time apart. What had happened? Why? Did it even matter, in the long run? Zul was certain he was supposed to say something, or do something, but he was also certain he'd never know what. He simply had to concede that he would do things his way, and it would either work...or it would not. He would accept no different.

Fingers moved to shift the stem between them, the velvet petals of the rose ghosting over the Sigel's cheek. "Rivener," he finally spoke, his voice still quiet and smoke-heavy. "I'm here."

The door closed behind the two guardians, leaving both Raevans alone in the room, but Rivener hadn't noticed. He was much too busy trying to keep the other tears from coming, frowning in focused concentration, trembling with the effort of it. His spine was sore from the tension, his arm was beginning to throb, the stitching pulled as he shook.

Without warning, and wholly unexpected, Zul's lips suddenly pressed to Riv's in a kiss, shocking the Scorpion straight of his skin. He flinched physically, groaned at the pain of the movement, eyes snapping open wide. His wings tried to do the same, but bumped noisily against the edges of his bed. Startled surprise quickly melted into desperate, foolish hope and Rivener's eyes closed again under brows that knotted up in agony. If Zul kissed him like this and then left him again, Rivener wouldn't be able to take it! He whimpered softly, nearly panicking with fear at how overwhelmingly needy he was becoming. He didn't want to seem weak! B-but...

Thoughts soon became impossible as the kiss continued for a few heartbeats, each of which Rivener heard thumping through his ears like thunder. He held his breath, and only exhaled once the frei moved away. Bleary, disoriented, the ruby eyes cracked open to stare into the blue eyes he'd been sure he would never get to see again this close. Something soft brushed his face... a flower? A flower?!

And then Zul's voice, finally, so much richer than Rivener's memory could ever make it sound...

Rivener broke. He couldn't hold it in any longer. With a shaky breath his face gave up all pretense of strength and the tears began, Riv sobbing softly as he turned his face down to nuzzle at the hand against his cheek. With trembling fingers Rivener reached up to hold Zul's wrist lightly, keeping their contact. He wanted to talk, to ask questions, to try to explain everything, to tell Zul how deeply he'd missed him, but Rivener knew he couldn't get words out now.

The sounds of distress made Zul think that maybe the kiss was unwanted, but gone were the days of the demon acting upon the consideration of others when he needed to do what was necessary. Once again, the demon thought that doing this might cost him the ability to ever see Rivener again, but it had to be done - he didn't know what to say! For all the words his ex-tutor had taught him and all the ways she had opened his mind, he still found himself floundering in the face of the Scorpion. Why? Was this a part of what it really meant to feel helplessly in love?

If the tears had surprised him, the sobbing out right floored him. The Frei's lips parted in shock, his thumb automatically lifting to brush against the skin that was pressing into the cup of his palm. He understood Rivener was crying, he wasn't that dense, but he still didn't understand why! For one clear moment, Zul was certain that the Sigel would rip his hand away and tell him to get out. To loathe him, like Jezebelle had, even if his gesture was what he felt was best for Rivener. When his gauntleted wrist was clutched rather than thrown aside, Zul felt even more confused, his heart beating a painful hole in his chest.

The worry was back in his knitted brows, feeling the flighty threads of uncertainty in the back of his throat. How was he supposed to read this?! Zul frowned and, with a heavy feeling in his chest, pushed the rest of his body over the railing and settled against the Sigel in the bed. He put the rose against the pillow, freeing up on arm to wrap behind the Scorpion's neck and part of his shoulders, drawing him into a laying embrace and holding him with that one arm. He didn't dare move his hand - if he was still invited to stay, he would take it. Zul needed the contact almost as much as his wounded Rivener did.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 15, 2010 8:06 pm

Rivener's insides felt like jelly. Shame at the display, fear that he was lessening in Zul's eyes because of it, desperation to feel his beloved's touch in any way regardless of the price... All these emotions were too strong now, spiraling out of control inside him, and after the void he'd forced himself into for the past month and a half, Rivener was wholly unprepared to deal with this. Now that he'd begun crying, there'd be no stopping it until it had run it course. His entire being shivered with each wracking sob, but in some still-coherent part of his mind Rivener felt so damned thankful that Zul hadn't pulled away.

Quite the contrary, the demon suddenly repositioned himself into the bed! The Scorpion's heart gave a giant heave of adoration and longing, fueling his tears further. Ignoring the pain in his shoulder, Riv turned into the hold as much as he could, moving his hand from Zul's wrist so he could wrap that arm around the half-formed body close to his own. The red-and-black head ducked down to Zul's neck, hiding his shameful sobbing there, breathing in the other's scent, committing everything to memory as vividly as he could in case this was not a renewal. In case Zul left him again.

How warm... How perfect... Rivener had missed him so much! He had to tell him, he had to say something, he couldn't just let him leave without having said a word! Frantically Rivener tried to slow his sobs, until he could force out a few sporadic syllables. "...I-... I'm s-so... sorry! Z-Zul, Why? I th-thought... Thought... you h-hated me!" Getting the words out took a toll, opening the wounds on his heart fresh. Riv's hand clutched at Zul's back possessively, not wanting him to go. Please don't go, please don't go, don't leave me, don't leave me again, don't leave me!

"Why?" the demon repeated in a puzzled tone, using his now freed hand to lace into the Scorpion's bi-colored hair and hold him more fully. It felt like when they used to lay together at the Delaran house, just soaking in each other's time. The memory felt like a lifetime ago.

But what was this? "Why would I hate you?" he asked in a bewildered tone of voice, once again taken for a loop with shock. The tri-horned Frei would have pulled back to look at Rivener with disbelief were he able, but the tight hold the Sigel had on him ensured he only pulled the injured Raevan closer rather than holding him at a distance. Zul was stunned into silence for several moments, trying to absorb the words that seemed to smack his forehead and deflect off elsewhere. Hate? How could he hate Rivener? Even if they could no longer be together because of the Frei's own shortcomings, he'd never bear ill will to the one who taught him so much!

"You mean...not wanting to move back?" Zul wasn't certain where this was all going or where it had even come from. "I can't say," he said at length, that confusion still heavy in his voice. "I just don't like it there. Your humans are obnoxious and...it's just not for me." Zul wouldn't tell the Scorpion that it was the Sigel's little brother that was the source of his discomfort, just as he did not tell his woman. It was his problem and his alone; he'd dealt with it. True, the demon had torn apart another relationship but that wasn't the important factor here.

After a few moments, the Frei's body relaxed, curling more tightly against the Sigel's half-form. "...this green doesn't suit you," he commented at length, looking at the flimsy material that was hiding his Scorpion away from him. To say the Frei didn't comprehend the gravity of the situation was rather apt.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 15, 2010 8:35 pm

Rivener only clutched tighter in the silence that stretched on and on between them while Zul thought. The Scorpion's sobs were the only sounds filling the room, but they were slowing... By the time Zul finally spoke again, asking if this was because he didn't move back to be with Riv, the Sigel had improved to mere sniffles and hiccups, interspersed with long shaky sighs. His eyes still shed tears as desperately as before, but at least Rivener had his breathing under better control. He'd keep his head tucked at Zul's neck until he was presentable.

...Which wouldn't be anytime tonight, apparently. The demon noted how the green didn't suit Rivener, and the Scorpion instantly hated the nightgown. He hadn't been fond before, of course, but to be seen like this by the demon-frei?! Riv groaned, though there was nothing he could do about it. Anything he tried would necessitate him to let go of the other, and that was the one thing Riv refused to do. If he let go, Zul might just disappear.

"You were s-so angry. You just left me on the beach... You never spoke to me again. You took your things, you didn't say goodbye, You just... left. What was I supposed to think?" He hardly stammered, for which he was proud... Now if only his voice could stop wavering so weakly. Rivener hugged himself to Zul, grunting at the twinge of pain in his shoulder: too much pressure on his side. "...is it me who's just not for you?" In the Sigel's mind, he was completely and wholly at fault for everything. Why else would his Flower have accused him of keeping him like a trophy bauble? To this day those words stung, burned into Rivener's heart. He needed to make it right. "You weren't a t-trophy. Never. You were-... are my special one, my O-..ONLY one. My Flower." He hoped he wouldn't be rejected... shaking with fear and nerves, Rivener huddled closer, hiding at Zul's neck.

Zul stared at the pillow in a baffled manner. "My tutor was waiting for me, and -- Rivener, you didn't speak to me either." The demon had no concept of two-way roads yet when it came to give and take, but it had struck him just as odd that the Sigel had never tried to reach out to him. He'd thought...maybe the Scorpion had found something better. Something more worthy of his time. Someone like Lucia.

The question made him turn his head into the Scorpion's long ear are the curve of his horn, frowning. Zul couldn't possibly fathom how to answer that - just as he was still learning to grasp and understand the intricacies of love, so too could he not be expected to just know how things should be. He had a notion in his mind of what things should be and how it should all go, but not a single thing had happened as he had hoped for. The demon decided to sit with honesty. "I don't know," he replied quietly against the long ear, "what it means to be for someone." He knew what it meant to change, to lose yourself, to snuff out the flame of individuality...but to be and exist as one's self in time with another...he was in the dark.

"What I know is that I love you. As much as I can with as little as I know and understand, I think...love is wanting to see your special one happy. To be the one to make them happy." The Frei lightly pressed his lips to the ear he was speaking so softly against. He had learned as much when he saw Jezebelle with that gutter troll of a human male - and when he had begun to feel a bit of disquiet at the notion that Rivener might have been that way with someone else. Drawing in a deep breath, Zul spoke the words he had decided upon weeks ago, speaking from the heart. "I want to see you happy. If you want more, you can have more. Anyone should be so lucky to have your attention, Rivener. Just come back to me when the day is done."

That was all he truly wanted.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 15, 2010 9:30 pm

Rivener frowned lightly against the neck he was holding hostage. Rivener hadn't spoken to Zul either, but... It was because Zul had made it so clear he'd wanted nothing to do with Riv! All this time, they could have been speaking? All this time, Rivener suffered for nothing? ...And now Zul didn't know what it meant to be "for someone"? How could Zul not know, when it seemed so obvious to Rivener? Often the Sigel forgot that his beloved didn't absorb all this as quickly as Riv had.

It doesn't matter, as long as he stays here with me. He's here now and that's all I care about. The Scorpion forced his frown off his face, though he was grateful it had at least, finally, stemmed the flow of tears.

Those tears nearly began again when Zul suddenly and unexpectedly declared his love. Rivener gasped at those words, holding his breath, waiting to see if there would be a "but" added to those words... The one hand holding Zul's body close began trembling worse, Rivener shaken to his very core by what he was hearing.

"NO!" he declared loudly, vehemently, lifting his head free to finally dare to meet those blue eyes. He frowned in concern, near panicking. Not this again! He didn't want there to be any such thoughts in Zul's head anymore! "No, nonono, no, I don't want more! That's what I was trying to say, back on the beach! The moment I realized I loved you, because I didn't know it at first-... the moment I knew it was love, I stopped trying to be with others! I was only for you, only for you! I-..." He didn't want to bring up Lucia's name, so he wouldn't, shaking his head and slipping his hand up to Zul's hair, caressing. "I only want you. I don't want you to think it's okay to share me. I want to be yours only. So please don't say those things."

And once those words had been spoken and hopefully the confusion was eased, Rivener suddenly let it sink in that Zul had told him he loved him again. A tentative smile pulled at the Scorpion's face, and he was suddenly highly self-conscious about how horrific he must look with his puffy red eyes and his tear-streaked face. He turned his eyes down to the flower on the pillow. "...Can you say it again? Please? I just want to hear it..."

Serene blue eyes rested upon the stressed crimson reds of the Sigel, hearing the protest and watching the panic rise in the Scorpion's face. Zul understood what Rivener was saying, but there was still a bit of untruth to it. The demon remembered being told the Sigel loved him, and the pool party that followed - but even then, Rivener had eyes for others. He'd said so himself! Even so, the Frei allowed what he felt was a small lie to pass without being tread upon; he himself had already offered one to his injured counterpart and it was something he never planned on explaining in full to anyone. It was between the b*****d Eirdirsceol and himself.

That, and Rivener had his fingers in his hair, and thus the demon was very content indeed. Zul uttered a low, smoky sounding purr and leaned into the touch, blue eyes lidding heavily. There was nothing for him to say now; he'd said his peace, Rivener had said his, and what happened from here on out...they'd have to figure out on their own.

The request made him focus again, looking at the Sigel he was partially laying above and not seeing any of the horrific details that Rivener was thinking about. What Zul saw was the real Scorpion beneath the handsome, suave mask, someone he cherished immensely. To add to the words he was going to offer, he bowed his half-back and lifted his hands to the back of his neck, unfastening his gorget and removing it from his person. Putting the thick material that no longer had light without his influence aside, he let Rivener see what was there against his not-so-bare throat: a chain, wrapped twice around his neck, and just beneath the swell of his voice box, the gifted red flower pendant.

"I love you, Rivener," he obliged with a light smile, the expression of which reached his eyes more so than his lips.
PostPosted: Fri Sep 17, 2010 7:25 am

Rivener's eyes widened as the gorget was removed, revealing their immortal red flower. All along, Zul had kept it! That close, hidden, protected, Zul had kept it! Rivener's trembling fingers slowly edged their way down to Zul's neck, brushing ever so lightly over the pendant. A smile mirroring Zul's pulled at Rivener's lips, and for the first time in a long time, that knot that had nearly squeezed the life out of Riv's heart eased. The Scorpion felt calm, peaceful. "...I love you too, Zul." His ruby gaze met Zul's sky-blue, and the smile actually, finally, reached Riv's eyes when he saw the softness in Zul.

He would get better now. In all senses of the word. Sighing deeply, the Sigel leaned up and kissed his beloved Flower, letting the touch begin to heal his broken heart.

The stars had been right after all. Though this accident had brought them back together, Rivener understood that they'd been right. Red had bloomed from regret. ...But not anymore.
