The grey hyena sat by herself, mulling over her situation. Well, she had done it. It hadn't been long since the ... act, but Bahari was with pups. She could tell. She wasn't sure how, but she could. It was a little unsettling, really. Bahari had coasted through life up until now. The grey hyena would back up her sister in anything, everything, but she didn't have Dikeledi's drive. She just kind of ... went. The idea of having pups to boost their numbers had been a sensible one, but now that she was actually pregnant, it seemed much more serious than it had.
Bahari was going to have pups, and Dikeledi ... well, Dikeledi couldn't tell whether or not she was pregnant, and neither could Bahari. For the first time in her life, Bahari might be doing something without her sister, and it was an alarming thought.
Dikeledi would help, of course ... but neither of them had had pups before. Neither had the males, as far as Bahari knew. Certainly Bekeli didn't seem like much of a charmer. Bahari wondered where her "mate" was now. The grey hyena frowned, feeling uncharacteristically pensive. She had liked Bekeli before as a ... well, friend was a little too much. Affable stooge, maybe, although that was a mouthful. Now? She wasn't sure how she was supposed to feel towards the scrawny, whiny hyena that had contributed genes towards her growing babies.

He watched her from afar.
Bekeli had been avoiding the others like they were the plague. Ever since he'd... done things with Bahari, he couldn't bear to face her. He'd gotten caught up in the moment of excitement that had rushed through his blood. He figured that staying away would keep things at least somewhat normal. Bekeli didn't want Bahari to think that badly of him. It'd been strange to have her approach him and suggest things to him. Exciting things. Things he'd never even thought of doing before.
Things he didn't really want to attempt again... for the most part.
Bekeli certainly wasn't the brightest star in the sky but he did have one thing going for him. He was loyal to a fault, a dedicated servant to his Queens. Despite his dedication, he wasn't sure how he was feeling. Things were just off in his world.
Maybe talking with Bahari would fix that.

Bahari noticed the scrawny male watching her. Bekeli had been avoiding her. She hadn't been embarrassed, exactly, but she hadn't sought him out either. Still, it was a little saddening. Bekeli had been amusing, and she was touched by his loyalty. Not touched a whole lot, but a bit at least.
Well, she couldn't let this go on forever. Sooner or later they'd have to talk. Might as well be now. Slowly, Bahari got to her feet and began ambling over towards Bekeli. He looked anxious, but that wasn't out of the ordinary for the nervous striped hyena.
"Hello there, Bekeli," Bahari said, strolling up to him. She fell quiet, not really knowing what else to say. She wanted to talk with him, but she wasn't sure what she wanted to talk about.

Bekeli paced as soon as he saw Bahari approach him. He whined softly to himself, the sounds trailing off into whimpers as she drew closer. What did she want? He wasn't sure what to say, he only knew this was utterly and terrifyingly awkward. He hoped she didn't want to do... things... again. It had been a horrifyingly unbearable experience for him.
"Don't make me do it again," he whined softly, eying the dirt beneath Bahari's toes. He looked appalled that he'd actually said it, and hurriedly covered it with a quick greeting to the female.
"Bahari," he nodded, eyes almost frantic. What could she possibly want now?

Well, that was some greeting! Bahari almost laughed at the absurdity of it. But even though she could usually find something to laugh at about awkward situations, she was female, and that line hurt her feelings a little bit. Huh! She might not be as flashy as her pink-striped sister, but Bahari thought she was rather nice-looking. Certainly nicer looking than scraggly Bekeli.
Why, it was almost enough to irritate her, and Bahari generally tried to avoid being upset. She had thought it was largely an act of pity on her part, and here Bekeli was acting like she was some sort of monstrous seductress. "That's not very nice," Bahari said, disapprovingly. "I just wanted to talk to you. Anyways, as I recall, you weren't all bent out of shape over it at the time."

Oh great. Now he'd hurt her feelings, which wasn't what he'd intended to do at all. He was just so stupid sometimes. Bekeli grunt-whined, forcing himself to sit in front of her. "I'm sorry," he groused, not sure what he should do or say next. "I just don't ... I mean, you are a beautiful Queen," he stammered in his whiny, nasally tone.
"I.. do not want to have to disgrace you again," he wailed dramatically. It had been awful! The mounting, the grunting, the ... ending. All terrible, humiliating things. "Forgive me!"

Feeling a little less ruffled, Bahari sat next to Bekeli. The grey and blue male really was quite inoffensive. Bahari wasn't sure why she got on with him, but she did. His whining and cringing generally didn't annoy her at all. She felt ... kindly towards him, like towards some mildly brain damaged pup.
Which they might be having soon, with Bekeli for a father. Yikes.
Bahari struck that fear from her heart, reminding herself that she and her sister were both superior hyenas, and that Bekeli's general terribleness was due to his being a male. Bahari snorted a laugh, finally. "Aw, you didn't disgrace me, Bek," she said. "Me'n Dikeledi want to have some pups. We can't be a proper hyena clan without some babies." She couldn't help glancing down at her own belly. It was far, far too soon for anything to be showing, but it felt instinctive to look, to check.

Bekeli felt pacified for the moment. She'd chosen him to father her pups? Well, now, how about that? Bahari had chosen him, Bekeli, to father her pups!! His eyes grew wide in surprise as that information sank in. It was an honor! Bekeli knew this for a fact! Fathering pups of a Queen was a complete honor, one that few would experience in their lives!
"A-and are you p-pregnant?" He stammered, a complete fool. He would be a father? A father to Bahari's cubs? He felt faint.

If Bahari had been her sister, she would have grouched that Bekeli would dare think she did that just for fun. As it was, Bahari was amused by Bekeli's astonishment. Poor, dumb Bekeli looked absolutely flabbergasted. Bahari wasn't the type for vanity, but she was a little pleased by how awestruck he was. It was nice to be flattered now and then. A little bit, anyways. Sudaj's constant stream of oily compliments could get a tad annoying.
"I think so," Bahari answered, glancing down at herself again. Still nothing, but it never hurt to check. " 'Course it's way too early to tell for sure, but I have a feelin' about it." She wondered how many pups there would be. One? Two? A dozen? She dimly remembered there being four pups in her own litter. That seemed like a fair number.

Bekeli felt dizzy. He closed his eyes, trying to come to his senses. He'd just been told that he might be becoming a father, now was not the time for a dizzy spell. He couldn't stop the whoosh of pride that seared through his feeble little brain. He was going to be a daddy. To pups. He wasn't sure how many, and he didn't really care. The nervousness would come later, but right now he was happy... and dizzy. Bekeli did the only thing he could do in such a situation.
He passed out.

Oh, good grief. Bahari was tempted to laugh, but she was actually a little concerned. Bekeli lay there stricken. t was endearing, really, how utterly pathetic Bekeli was. She waved a paw in front of his nose, assuring herself that he was still breathing.
Bahari wasn't dismayed at Bekeli fainting. He was a male after all, and less grounded and sensible than a female. For a moment she tried to imagine Bekeli babysitting a bunch of rambunctious, bossy girls. Even worse -- better, for her amusement at least -- what if Dikeledi delivered her own pups about the same time? She chuckled, shaking her head. It was a good thing Bekeli would have that dumb lioness to help him.
The grey female turned and began walking back towards the rest of the "pack". Bekeli was a bundle of nerves at the best of times. It would be good for him to get a little sleep ... even the unconscious kind. He would need it once their pups arrived.
