So, has everyone heard the news?! D: Mike Portnoy is officially gone from Dream Theater!
Just thought this was pretty big news. I know this Guild hasn't been active for a while, but I just wanted to pass on the news to anyone who happened to stop by. Definitely stop by DT's main website for more information, but according to the official page he's left the band for a break, and they've decided to continue on without him.

Most of the circles where I contribute say that this may very well be a welcome change for the band, and that without Portnoy the focus will turn more towards Petrucci and Myung, those three being the core members of the band in the first place, and that we'll actually get some good songwriting out of them for a while.
I'm worried mostly about Portnoy's involvement with Transatlantic, since that's a project into which you can't just cut apart and paste replacement members, all four members make up the band, no ifs, ands or buts about it. Chances are, they'll split up again, like they did when Neal Morse went Christian, and we won't hear from them for ten years like the last time as well, which is a shame, because The Whirlwind was an excellent album in its own right, despite not living up to its predecessor, Bridge Across Forever.
