She'd been sitting in the emergency room for an hour now, keenly aware of the throbbing pain in the back of her head. It had since ceased to bother her, though; for all the steady pulses that were timed to her heartbeat, she was still playing on her blackberry, answering emails and updating her Facebook status.

The nurses were aware she was there, but with the slowly-proceeding exodus of coma patients and a recent three-car pileup, she wasn't exactly high priority. She was in no danger of dying, because the blood flow had mostly stopped. That didn't mean she looked unharmed; there was still a copious amount of blood staining the high collar of her trendy sweaterdress, but it was mostly dried. Whatever had happened, it was about an hour old. It was alright, really, she'd decided. They'd get to her when they got to her.

After a minute, though, she could hear irritated voices; quirking an eyebrow, she leaned back in her seat. It was awfully loud for a hospital, was all she was saying. They could keep their voices down a little, her head was starting to pound.

Dani was fine. Of course her parents weren't aware exactly why she was as fine as she was, but she was fine. Given how many people were in the hospital for actual life-and-death injuries lately, she figured she was just wasting everyone's time being there, and she'd argued her point passionately on the entire drive in. Unfortunately, she didn't get points for effort or fervor; at the end of the day, she was still sixteen years old and she had to listen to her parents when they really put their foot down.

It didn't mean she had to be happy about it, though. Arms crossed tight under her chest, scowl heavy on her face, she jerked her shoulder away from her father's questing hand. They were probably going to be stuck there for hours -- just look at all the people already waiting -- and she didn't even need to be there. There were few things that irritated Dani more than wasting time, though it wasn't like it would have taken a lot to annoy her lately.

She was tense. She was stressed. She couldn't find her boyfriend anywhere, not that she'd been able to properly look considering her parents checked in on her in the middle of the night. Her dad would go absolutely apeshit if she wasn't in bed, she just knew it, and though she thought it was worth the fight, she hadn't thought of a good enough excuse yet.

Screw everything, though. If she didn't hear from Parker soon, she was going to sneak out and she didn't care if she got caught. The only good thing that might come from this check-up would be if it finally laid her parents' fears to rest so that she could go back to having a normal life.

If it didn't, she was going to scream. She would scream, and then she would run away from home, or something.

"It's a long wait," her father said, mouth a little tight at the corners when his daughter flipped her eyes up to him petulantly.

"Of course it is. People are here for real emergencies," Dani shot back, not caring that her voice was a little too loud for the setting. "I told you, Dad, I'm fine."

"Do not take that tone with me." He gestured for her to sit, icy blue brows slanting down when she flounced past him and found an available seat next to someone she didn't know.

Vincent started forward, but his wife gripped him just above the elbow, guided him to a pair of open seats. Crossing her legs at the ankle, Dani scowled down at her sneakers, feet jiggling in annoyed impatience while she waited.

She was only amused by this for so long, though, and so turned, surveying the girl next to her for the space of a few seconds. She looked like s**t, frankly, and it surprised Dani a little that she was still sitting out there, though it didn't look like she was bleeding just then.

A more delicate, sensitive girl would have softened her voice, asked carefully what had happened. Dani was neither of these things. Tactlessly, she demanded, "What happened to you?" frank curiosity on her face.

She was still annoyed, yeah, but it quickly melted away at the prospect of focusing on someone else's misery for a moment or two.

Someone flopped down in the seat next to her, jarring the arm of the chair Kaatje had occupied and thus jarring the redheaded girl personally. In fact, she had her blackberry jarred right out of her hand, and she leaned after it almost immediately.

This was a mistake.

"Ow," she whimpered, pressing her hand to the back of her head. The wound peeked out from her orange hair, gruesomely wine-purple where the blood clotted. This pain made her sour in addition to her usual lack of poise, so her words to the blue-haired stranger were not exactly genteel.

In fact, they were downright acidic: "Oh, nothing, I'm just a costumed vigilante who got her a** handed to her by a douchebag with a microphone and an a*****e with a gay-a** set of bells." For a moment, she let this hang, her slightly disfocused blue eyes narrow. "What do you think happened," she asked after a few awkward minutes, flopping back in her seat. "I got mugged." And she shrugged, disheveled hair falling into her eyes. "And what about you," she asked, flipping the device in her hands back on. "You don't look injured."

Dani was less than impressed by the other girl's tone, but she reflected that if she was sitting in a hospital waiting room covered in blood, she'd be a little testy herself. It didn't stop her from looking disapproving and annoyed, but it did keep her from being quite as scathing as she normally would have been in response.

"Sucks to be you," she finally settled for, shoulders coming up a little in a half-shrug, half-pouting motion. "There's a lot of that going around lately. .. costumed vigilantes and muggings," she clarified, powder blue eyebrows disappearing behind her bangs as she gave the other girl a brief but intense look.

Sailor scout? There was no way to tell, but she highly doubted someone who was actually a senshi would be stupid enough to broadcast it in the hospital. More than likely, she was just being an a**.

"I'm just here to get examined to make sure I'm still fine," she said, rolling her eyes. "I was in a coma, traumatic injuries and all that. But I'm obviously fine," she said, raising her voice enough that her mother glanced over, but her father firmly ignored her.

She sighed, then scowled.

Kaatje was not in the habit of seeking out pity, so the return comment wasn't taken particularly personally. It did garner the blue-haired girl a high-browed, particularly arrogant stare, but beyond that she was content to just sit in her chair and answer emails. She felt particularly strongly that Versace was going to be in this season--the beautiful lines, the soft gradients, the holy god her head was throbbing.

"Tell me about it," she said, and then, because she was hungry to hear her own rumors, she asked: "Did you hear about the one that blew up some boat full of fireworks down by the docks?" It was a good thing no one was looking around Crystal for an arsonist; she had enough google searches for "sailor senshi arsonist destiny city" to make some people very curious. "What a b***h," she said, her expression one of hate--the very particular kind of self-hatred that most pretty, skinny girls like Kaatje assigned to food.

Oh well.

She shrugged one shoulder. The concussion made Kaatje loquacious: "Well, what if you have some kind of long-lasting defect. My cousin Kres broke his shoulder in a car accident once. He's still in therapy because he didn't listen when they said don't drive for six weeks and he almost threw out his shoulder permanently. Anyway, your dad's probably just worried and you're lucky to have him and all that bullshit."
