[I admit I did make a thread in ED, but not much activity there]

So my Government class had a lecture on plagarism along with copyright, and the topic of how illegally downloading music really affected everyone as a whole. I have been using 4share for years (yesterday I just wiped out my iPod for my sis's music to upload), but now after hearing that:

a) record companies lose $12.5 billion dollars a year on revenue

b) $150,000,000,000 is the potential legal liability for all involved

c) 71,060 jobs lost (people who work for the recording artists such as someone who does make up etc)

d) each illegally downloaded song is like $6,000!!! And not to mention "vicarious infringement" that the record companies can sue on parents who allowed/had no knowledge of such activity. Record companies love targeting the teens of today X_X;

I'm still thinking about destroying my Ipod after learning that 4share isn't on the "downloading sites that are legal" nor the "sites that aren't illegal", but I don't want to take my chances. Apparently record companies are pushing this issue to have spybots to track down people who downloaded music for free to listen to for personal use.

Another side of me during the lecture just played the devil's advocate:

a) how many artists really care?

b) I can't see good bands like Paramore go down the tubes after the money earned from concerts. I bet the bands of today won't have managers like the one that had N'Sync/Backstreet Boys (the guy basically took in more money that was supposed to go to the band).

So zCB, what's your take on downloading music onto MP3 players? Is it something serious that the government should take action upon? I never knew so much money would be lost to the recording artists and record companies @_@; (okay the money isn't technically "lost" but just money that could have been gained). Though I did remember seeing a South Park episode parodying this issue... but whatever. Thoughts fire away!

They're full of bullshit. To be frank - you can't have money you never would have had. The implicit assumption of those stats is that everyone who downloaded music would have bought the music instead.

They wouldn't. A fair number of people download music because they can't afford to. A decent number of people who download the music will only take those songs because they're free - wouldn't shell out for an actual CD. And other people who download then later buy the music if they actually liked it.

All bands get more of their money on touring rather than record sales.
That just benefits the record companies.
And like Nespin said, like 95% of the people pirating music wouldn't actually buy it.
And some of those people buy it as a result of pirating.

I use piracy merely to try before I buy.

Too many bands releasing s**t music these day to go throwing money away on an album you can't return if you don't like it. (Thank you copy right laws D<)

If I really like the artist I'll buy the cd just to have it, and rip the songs from it. Any other time I'll just download it.

As someone above me said: If I really like an album / artist I'll get the actual CD because I like having hard copies of all my music. Other than that I really never pay for music. Generally all my music comes from friends or library CDs because the libraries in my area have a pretty big collection. If I really want just one song and can't get it my usual ways I'll use a youtube downloader. I don't really trust other music downloading sites. o.o

I don't download songs or buy CDs.

I fave them on YouTube. :3

Soundzone (Music store where I live) Is actually shutting down because of people illegally downloading the music from the internet. I got all my CDs and DVDs from there. Now I have to travel a fair way out to actually buy music.

I do not like piracy. People are now out of jobs here. A small country town does not have much work going around. Finding work in the area is hard. Now we have more people going on the dole (Welfare) while looking for work.

Consider the effect of the person who's job is working as a Shop assistant in a music store, and then being told that they out of work due to piracy.

I'm on the fence on this one.

On one hand, I can understand why artists might get upset when hearing that their music has been pirated. They've put no little effort into their work, and probably expect some sort of compensation for it.

Ont the other hand, there are so many ways to get music without purchasing it yourself. For me, this consists mostly of borrowing CDs from family and friends to rip onto my computer. Or, they might make me a copy. I don't see how they could track that down, as it does go go through the internet, and the original source is a legitimate one.

As a note, there are some sites out there that say you can download music on a trial basis/one use only type of thing, and then to delete it. What's to stop people from just letting it sit on their computers for years?

I have to agree with Nespin and Woo here. I've bought a grand total of 4 CDs in my whole life, and only 1 of those was before I had the internet. No one is losing money from me listening on Youtube or downloading, because if that option wasn't there for me, I just wouldn't listen to that music.

I will occasionally pay to legally download tracks by independent artists who don't have many fans yet though, because when it comes down to it, they're the ones who are going to lose most by illegal downloading. As for the rest of my music, a lot of it is offered free already, I've borrowed friend's cds for it, or I wouldn't be able to buy it legal anyway.

Recently my brother has been using Spotify, which means he can listen to whatever while still supporting the artists (although there are criticisms about the treatment of independent artists).

On the subject of CD stores and the like shutting down, it's worth pointing out that legal downloading also has an effect of that. A lot of people now are willing to pay for music, but would much rather have it cheaper, especially if they don't have the space to keep a lot of CDs anyway.

Personally, if the song is readily available for purchase I will buy it. If it's not easily available in the US (like a lot of anime music) or you have to buy an entire freakin' CD to get a certain song (for example, to get the MP3 of Friend Like Me from Aladdin, you have to purchase the entire CD...but I already have about half of that CD because the other songs are on other Disney CDs I have...I refuse to pay for songs I've already payed for just to get a single MP3) then I might consider downloading it from somewhere I'm not paying for it (though I still haven't done that because I'm weary about downloading from random sites because of viruses and spyware).

My cat needs music to practice with if she is to be the next Keyboard Cat, how do you expect an aspiring young artist with no money to their name to pay for music/music lessons?

Most (ok, 99%) of my music comes from movies/games anyway and I already bought them, that includes the music on them.

I download music illegally mainly to see if I like the band or whatever (or in the case of hard to find music in Japanese here). When I can I will pay for music from say Amazon downloader or whatever. But if I really like the band I'd rather see them in concert. At least that way THEY are getting most of the money and not the record company.

As to the music stores going bust, that's not piracy that did that, that's most likely the internet where you can get a CD delivered to your door a hell of a lot cheaper in some cases than buying it from a store.

I do it anyways. It's none of my concern what happens to those people. I get my music fill with no negative repercussions.
