Sudaj didn't really think that the other hyenas had expected to travel as far as they had, nor did he think they'd expected to have to continue traveling. Bekeli hadn't been... well, needless to say Bekeli wasn't the brightest hyena on the face of the earth. He'd told the sisters they were close to the lush water source when in truth they'd been weeks away from it. The savanna was a large, unforgiving thing, and it was easy to lose track of time.
They were resting now, having been at a solid, grueling pace for the past day. Manyara, Bahari's new pet, wasn't holding them back thankfully, and they kept their harried pace for days at a time before stopping for a well-needed break.
With nothing better to do, Sudaj approached Bahari. He wanted to know why she had wanted to keep the lioness around. It really was just one more hungry mouth to feed, one more body to look after, and Sudaj couldn't understand. As he drew close to the hyena he cleared his throat, hopefully alerting her to his presence.

The grey hyena was enjoying their break. It had been hard going, but that was all right. She liked the challenge, and also ... well, there were mildly interesting new things to do, and mildly interesting new things to see. Like their new companions. The two male hyenas and the lioness were endless sources of amusement. Not that Bahari didn't love her sister, but Dikeledi could be just a little bit uptight sometimes.
Bahari turned her head at the little hem-hem. Sudaj. "Oh?" She raised her eyebrows. Sudaj usually seemed focused on Dikeledi, so this was a little bit unusual. The grey hyena smiled at him lazily, ready to be amused. "What's on yer mind, Sudaj?"

"Bahari," he greeted the female, eye-balling her as if to gauge her mood. He didn't want to make it seem as if he was being abrasive. If that got back to Dikeledi, well, that wouldn't be good. He wanted to stay on Dikeledi's good side, what there was of it anyways.
"Are you free to talk?" He was curious about her motives behind keeping the lion around. If she was receptive, he would ask. If not, perhaps he could weasel it out of the fool Bekeli. "If not, I can try another time." He made sure to keep his head low, tail tucked and ears back; the more submissive the better.

Bahari laughed. Good old Sudaj, being silly already. What a foolish question. Sudaj wasn't as stupid as poor pitiful Bekeli, but he certainly acted like it sometimes. "I'm not doing anything, am I?"
She settled back, watching him more alertly now. Ready to be entertained by whatever Sudaj had to tell her. If it was some urgent bad news, he would have spilled it already. "Come on out with it, 'daj. What've you got to say?"
Maybe it would be a tearful confession of his secret passion for Dikeledi. Oooh. Juicy. She would definitely laugh then.

Sudaj grunted, not sure why she was laughing. Bahari was a little off, perhaps? Maybe that was why she got along so famously with that idiot Bekeli.
"I suppose you aren't, Bahari." He arranged himself in a seated position, feeling a bit more relaxed. She seemed to be in a decent mood, and so he figured he might as well ask her what he wanted to ask her.
"Why did you want to keep the stupid lion around?" He blurted, a confused look on his face. "It made sense to me, having a slave, but... why now? We are still on our way to the water... having one extra mouth to feed.. well, it's just curious."

Why did she want to keep that stupid lion? Well, Bahari wasn't entirely sure of that herself. But she was a female hyena, and to go back on her decision would be ... would be ... well, it just wouldn't be right! She chewed her lip thoughtfully.
"We won't always be traveling," Bahari said. "It'll be nice to have her to clean out old bones and whatever those other dirty lions left." The grey hyena shrugged. "I bet we can take some of 'em captive, but they might be all fussy and beat up."
"And if she's too much of a pain, we can eat her on the way there." Bahari nodded to herself, satisfied with her reasoning.

Sudaj couldn't argue with that, he supposed. It made enough sense. He didn't really want to pressure her for more information; doing so could anger her, and he really didn't want to have her angry at him. It could get back to Dikeledi.. and, well.. he was trying to get on Dikeledi's good side.
"There is a reason you are our Queen," he murmured to the female. "Your intelligence is inspiring." Flattery could get him places; he'd learned that long ago, and still to this day used it. Perhaps she would end up putting a good word in to Dikeledi. That would be a best-case scenario, to be sure.

Bahari rolled her eyes. She didn't mind flattery. Actually, she had grown to appreciate it quite a bit. But Sudaj was obviously putting on an act. "You're usually sucking up to Dikeledi," the grey hyena remarked, eying Sudaj. "What happened, she tell you to get lost?" The thought of this and how crushed the poor, obviously smitten Sudaj would be amused her, and she went into a sudden gale of laughter.

Sudaj grunted. He hadn't been making much headway in his romance with Dikeledi. She seemed rather.. off put by his attempts to woo her. It was frustrating. She was a nut that he couldn't crack despite his best efforts.
"No, she didn't.. not today, at least." He seemed forlorn and a bit uncomfortable by the topic of conversation. "Why do you ask?"

Aw. Now Sudaj was sad. Bahari wasn't quite as ... well, snappish as Dikeledi. She hadn't really meant to hurt the brown hyena's feelings. Although the self pity Sudaj was obviously wallowing in was kind of funny, Bahari didn't want to tease him about it further.
"Eh, no reason." She nudged Sudaj. "Cheer up. Why don'tcha go play with that lioness, Manyara? She's a sadsack." The grey hyena snorted. Manyara was a lot of things, certainly. "Get her used to doin' what she's told."

Sudaj shuffled his feet and shrugged when Bahari nudged him. "I suppose I could go harass that worthless slave," he mumbled, hefting himself to his feet. He turned to look at Bahari, dipping his head in thanks before turning away. "Appreciate the conversation," Sudaj grunted in her direction. Whether he was being nice and truthful or sour and false, it was hard to say. That being said, Sudaj padded off in search of that stupid lioness, Manyara.
