It was late. Much later than Optheli and Dynith normally came to bed. It really was a strange coincidence that had brought them to this pass. The pair were on their usual night time walk before bed, to simply relax and bond together. The girl had her arm draped over the green neck when Dynith mentioned a flit clutch was hatching nearby. The pair, of course, had gone over to at least watch when a green flit had picked Optheli out as Hers.

Now, they were on their way back to the shared barracks. Optheli was walking with exaggerated care not to disturb the green sheltered on her arm. Her dragon followed at her heels trying to peer curiously at said flit. She tried to be as quiet as she could, but between her, the dragon, and the flit there was a fair bit of noise.

With Optheli strangely gone so late, V’al had set another candle to burn with the intention of testing the new leather he’d bought and stowed under his bed. But he’d no sooner pulled it out with eager hands than Lerath rumbled something about itching between his wings. Stalling his eagerness, V’al went to give a minute of obliging scratching, but close inspection showed need for much more detailed attention. Several spots on the blue’s hide looked dull in the moonlight, and by tomorrow they would be rough and itchy.

By the time he finished oiling Lerath, he was too tired do to more than push the leather back under his bed. The bigger you get, the more time your hide takes out of my day, he mock-complained. I might stop feeding you entirely.

Remind me to flip upsidedown when we begin flying.

V’al smirked to himself and started tugging off his boots as Optheli entered. Accustomed to her presence, he didn’t bother looking up as he tugged at his laces. “I thought you two weren’t coming back,” he said casually.

Optheli startled as her bunkmate's voice came to meet her. The flit on her arm gave a small squawk of protest to the sudden movement. "Oh did you wait up for me? I'm so sorry V'al. I didn't mean to stay out so late." She petted its wings to sooth it, then moved in the direction of her bed. Dynith gracefully made her way to her own wallow.

"I didn't mean for this to happen, honest. Dynith mentioned a clutch hatching while we were out walking. So we went to watch. Then one of them picked me, and I couldn't not feed her. And that's what took so long." She finished in a rush. It was sweet of him to wait for her. She plopped onto the rushes and let out her breath in a fast exhale.

V’al glanced up, ready to disabuse her of the notion that he’d been staying up for her (it was a correction in his mind, not a condescending remark), but his response was arrested by the sight of the green lump in the crook of Optheli’s arm. Hestood slowly, a stiff look over his face, uncaring that he was still in his unlaced boots and that the long laces spilled out across the floor. He craned his neck from afar. “Did you really Impress that thing?” he asked, upper lip rippling in disgust.

Optheli was ready for her bunkmate to come over and peer at the flit, but not what he actually did. Her mouth opened in surprise. "V'al? Is something wrong? And yes, I did Impress her. Her name is Ismay. Do you think I'd really bring a wild flit in here?

It was a delicate little thing now, he had to admit, but it wouldn’t stay that way. In the morning it would awake with a hunger strong enough to make it claws at anything, even Optheli, and it was a hunger that would stay for at least a week, only to be replaced by size and aggression, he was sure. He glanced between the Optheli and the thing nestled in her arms several times, helpless against their obvious Impression. For a fleeting moment he debating asking the Weyrlingmaster in the morning for a change of rooms, but he knew it wouldn’t be allowed over a firelizard. He slumped, scowling, and retreated to his side of the room, away from the creature. “When it’s old enough to understand anything, you teach it to stay away from me.”

Optheli was shocked by her bunkmate's sudden turn of mood. He'd been pretty reasonable up until this time. "Now just a minute V'al! She hasn't done anything to you. Why are you acting like that?" She couldn't believe his attitude and was rising up to defend her flit. It just wasn't fair to assume she'd be bad.

"It's because you think I can't train her hu? Well I can! I do just fine with Dynith, and she'll help me. You'll see!" She had tears in her eyes as she turned away from him. Optheli hadn't been allowed a flit in the caravan for various reasons when she'd asked. She was sure, if a chance had come that she could have trained a flit. It wasn't like she'd tried to impress her.

Dynith's eyes whirled yellow as she crooned and left her bed to move beside Her's bunk. Her head laid on her rider's lap as the girl's arm wrapped itself over her neck. 'Mine, don't cry. We will make sure she never bothers them. She will be our good little flit. I'll help, I promise.'

V’al watched her little display of emotion with a dark scowl across his face, as if her emotions were not softening him, but driving him to further irritance. Lerath, roused and unsure of his rider’s sudden emotion, stalked into the room. His wings were voluntarily closed for once and his eyes whirled an agitated orange as he circled to V’al’s side. The room was suddenly very full of dragonflesh.

Mine, what is it? What is wrong? What did she do?

I’ll explain later.

But, I wa-

Not now, V’al responded snappily, and grasped at a neck ridge to show he wasn’t angry at his own dragon – as if he could be.

He released Lerath’s neck after a moment, but continued scowling at Optheli. He had no idea what made some women act this way. Tears were an irritating form of attack in an argument. Or maybe it was defense, but it seemed underhanded the way their emotions had seizures when it became convenient. “Stop with the hysterics. It’s repulsive,” he criticized. “And that new pet of yours won’t have Dynith’s sense later on. It’ll fly in the face of anyone you look at when you get upset so sharding easily. Just teach it to stay away from me is all I want.” He glanced at the tiny green creature and revultion made itself evident on his face. He looked away with a slight shudder.

Optheli rubbed her wet cheeks against the soft green hide of her dragon. She tried to muffle her sobs, but some few escaped. It's not fair. He acts like she's already done it. Dynith, what did I do wrong? Am I not suppose to have a flit? She ended the thought with a private wail to her dragon. Several more tears dropped down onto the green skin.

"I-I am not ha-having hysterics. Yo-you're being rude." She was still turned away and her shoulders shook. "We-we'll see! She might even be brighter than you, and s-she won't j-judge someone just be-because." If he was going to be rude and snobbish, she wasn't going to look at him. Optheli hugged the little green flit to her closed as it started to croon worriedly.

Dynith trilled and crooned trying to comfort Hers. 'I don't know, Mine. There's no reason you couldn't have Impressed her like you Impressed me. Besides, you couldn't say no once she picked you.' The little green tried to extend her wing awkwardly over her rider's back.

Blathering women, V’al thought defensively, all three of them moaning and going on. He watch Optheli with pursed lips and retreated to his side of the room, where he sat on his bed and made a show of tugging his boots off in a measured and sensible fashion.

Why do you not like the firelizard? It is very small. Lerath, still tense and exuding the hostility of his rider, followed him to the bed and stood at a possessively close distance.

I just don’t like them. They bite, they scratch, and they’re filthy. Optheli’s just overreacting that I’m not fawning over the sharding thing. Would you settle down?

You are not settled down, Lerath accused. The blue looked across the room at Dynith and Optheli. He was still riled, but it was hard to blame the two for anything. He usually got along fine with them. His V’al made snide remarks about them sometimes, but he did that with everyone. He actually had the feeling that His liked them more than most people and he was only being difficult out of stubbornness. She is crying a lot. It would not be hard to apologize.

V’al pulled his legs up to his chest as he sat on the bed and draped his arms over them. I'm not apologizing because she's hysterical.

Then apologize or I will tell Dynith what you said about Optheli's figure last week.

V'al stared at his dragon, aghast. He wouldn't have been embarrassed precisely. Optheli had looked very nice in that dress, and it had made her eyes look bright and lovely, but there was a reason he hadn't said so himself. Firstly, he wasn't that interested her, and secondly he wasn't sure what sort of reaction it would illicit. He didn't want any of that, and he certainly didn't now.

I, Lerath said with slow conviction, have a very good memory.

V'al growled under his breath and shook his head. He didn't care for being manipulated, but there was little to be done. Had Lerath been anyone else, he would have stubbornly stuck it out, simply not to be bested, but there was no bluffing one's own dragon. Pulling some measure of reserve over his dissatisfied expression, he glanced at Optheli and her green scaled friends. "It's not like I was trying to upset you. I don't like any firelizards is all. My mother had a really nasty green when I lived with her. Would hiss and scratch at anything."

She hugged her dragon's head close. Somehow, she was sure that V'al wouldn't want to talk to her anymore. Unless she gave up the flit, which she couldn't do. He was her friend, but maybe he wasn't now. She decided to still be nice to him in the hallways, if she saw him, even though he didn't like her now.

When her bunkmate started speaking, she ignored him at first thinking he was bespeaking Lerath. Then Dynith interrupted her thoughts.
'Mine? He is speaking to you.' She stopped crooning and folded up her wing as Her's moved a little. 'Theli sat up and wiped a tear away from her cheek. She listened to what he was saying, blinking. Almost reluctantly, she slowly turned to face him on the bed. Her tears dried quickly as she realized the reason for his action. Eyes slightly red and puffy, she tried to give a smile.

"I'm sorry, V'al. I didn't know that. I don't think Ismay will be like that. If I promise to try real hard with her so she wont do that, will you promise to try tolerating her?" Now she knew the reason and her mind was working fast. Maybe he could accept one if she proved not every flit was like that. It gave her a goal at least.

V’al frowned, apparently not even pleased by the ease and effectiveness of his apology. He nodded reluctantly though. “I can try. I won’t be petting her or anything.” He rushed to qualify that. “Or feeding her, and training her and everything else is up to you. I’ll just stay out of the way as best I can.”

Lerath gave a contented hum of approval. His eyes whirled a slower and more approving shade of green as he withdrew from his protective stance over V’al.

"Ok, if that's how you really want it. I'd intended to train her myself with Dynith's help anyhow. You needn't worry." It was a small concession that V'al gave, but it still hurt that he didn't want anything to do with her. "I'll find some place other than here for her training." She patted the sleepy flit. "I... I think I'll go to bed now."

Optheli really didn't want to talk anymore. She was afraid she might break the easy truce they had come to. Looking down at the green flit, she had to wonder. Were they really that bad? Could Ismay turn into the little monster that V'al seemed afraid of? 'Theli gave a shake of her head. No. No, I wont let her be that way. She'll be a sweet, loving flit. And kind. V'al wont have any reason to be afraid of her. It was almost a promise to herself. Reaching up and turning the glow basket closed before she laid down with the flit curled up on her pillow.

“Good enough then.” V’al gave Lerath a long-suffering look and started preparing himself for bed as well. In the morning, he knew, the flitt would awake with a terrible hunger, but she’d take that out on Optheli. What he hoped for was that Optheli would be so busy with the firelizard and then tending to her dragon that she would forget his indiscretion, since he was too defensive over the matter to apologize further.

Lerath, to his credit, gave a rumble of farewell to the girl before returning to his wallow.

Dynith gave a soft trill back to the blue as she curled up in her bed.
