Hello my fellow RPers! I may not have been roleplaying for long, but that doesn't mean I'm new to creative writing. I also read varied genres, so it's safe to say I have a decent grasp on what makes up a good story and what kind of writing devices or "tricks" writers use to make good characters. If you're like me, you may sometimes have trouble using those devices to create a character that is not only "cool," but realistic and easy to play as.
I'm hoping this thread can do multiple things for our mini-community. One would be to publicize Gaian threads and outside links related to creating an RP character. Secondly, I would like to provide a general resource people new to RPing can come to and get tips on how they should go about creating a character. Third is to provide a place where a person can come in with a character profile, finished or not, and get constructive criticism from other roleplayers. Fourth is to perhaps discuss certain trends in the Gaian roleplaying community as a whole.
This thread will start out with just my observations and experiences, but as more discussion happens, I will draw upon the observations and experiences of others i.e. quoting people and posting those quotes on the first page. I really hope this thread becomes fun and helpful! 3nodding

►Current Topic◄ Amaiiko Amaiiko The CharacterCharacter Name: Ragnarok Sex: Male Age: 23 Sexuality: Straight Fairy Tail Tattoo Location: Left side of the neck. Type of Mage: Chosen Weapons: Alorian Daggers, Ebony and Ivory Biography:Born into an average family in Silversia (previously known as Hanyuya), a country that forbid Magic. Ragnarok didn't inherit any Magical abilities nor was he gifted the talent to learn any. However, he wasn't at all fortunate to have been given two God's Gifts in a land that forbid the use of Magical arts. With a touch of his right hand, Ragnarok can amplify anyone's Magical power by threefold. With a touch of his left hand, Ragnarok can nullify anyone's Magical power. Ragnarok grew up, helping his parents run a dojo, a training center that taught people the usage of different weapons crafted by Alchemist. Both his parents are Inventor Alchemist too. The Alorion Daggers were invented by his parents. His mother invented Ivory and his father invented Ebony. Alorion Daggers are daggers shaped like a crescent. No one knew of Ragnarok's gifts until twenty-three years later, on the day when he stopped the catastrophic event. A spell, oddly enough was named Ragnarok and was as powerful as Etherion was casted and aimed at Silversia, the caster none other than Zaniel. Using his left hand, Ragnarok was able to stop the spell. Being the first ever person to single-handedly stop the Ragnarok, he was given the alias Ragnarok. However, instead of being grateful for his courage and bravery, Deka, dictator of Silversia, arrested Ragnarok and his family for usage of Magic. His parents was tortured to death in front of his eyes. The shock and depression of watching his parents death caused him amnesia. He lost all his memories but retained his skills in using the Alarion Daggers. Luckily for him, Kimiko, the Illusionist, managed to overthrow Deka, ending his dictatorship and rescued Ragnarok out from his prison cell, a day before his execution. Ragnarok was eternally grateful to Kimiko and vowed to protect and aid her in whatever he can. Personality:Ragnarok disliked socializing with others. It is a habit he had developed since he was young. Since he had forgotten his past, including his name, he was unsure why he hated taking the initiative to make friends. However, ever since Kimiko saved him from his execution, he owed his life to Kimiko and vowed to protect her. He became overprotective of Kimiko. Anyone whom he deems dangerous to Kimiko will be attacked by him. He will then hold his suspect down and waits for Kimiko to give her 'verdict'. Kimiko was the only person he talked to. He would only talk to others when necessary. Appearance:Ragnarok stands at 174cm and weighs somewhere around 42kilograms. Ragnarok has no bulging muscles or a handsome face. He looks like your average Joe. He has brown spiky hair and he tends to keep his fringe up. He has a huge battle scar on his right cheek, which suggests his rigorous training with the Alorion Daggers. He wore a simple T-shirt and common leather jeans. He also wore two belts that cross each other like an 'X'. Each of the belt holds a sheath which kept Ragnarok's daggers when not in use. Ragnarok also wore thick Alchemist gloves with a steel plate on the back to protect his knuckles. His gloves also stops accidental usage of his powers. Magical Abilities: Ragnarok has no ability to use any Magic but he does have a couple of God's Gifts. Amplify - With a touch of his right hand, Ragnarok can amplify any Magical powers by threefold. However, he has no way of controlling this ability and his right hand must always be touching the source of the Magical power for Amplify to be in effect. Nullify - With a touch of his left hand, Ragnarok can nullify any Magical powers. However, he has no way of controlling this ability and his left hand must always be touching the source of the Magical power for Nullify to be in effect. Non-Magical Abilities: Although Ragnarok has lost his memories, he still retain his mastery at the use of daggers. He uses Ivory and Ebony, each dagger is different in their own way. Ivory - A white Alorian Dagger invented by Ragnarok's mother. Ivory is a crescent shaped dagger that is formed by segments. The segments are connected by a single chain and be separated to form a whip. Ebony - A black Alorian Dagger invented by Ragnarok's father. Ebony is a crescent shaped dagger that send a small electrical shock down from the handle to the sharp tip. On contact, it is enough to stun its target for a short while. Weaknesses:Armed Combatant - Ragnarok relies heavily on his daggers to help him in combat. Without his daggers, his combating skills are halved. He knew only little of street fighting. God's Gifts - There is no way in controlling his Nullify and Amplify powers. On touch, Nullify and Amplify takes immediate effect and he has to keep his hands on the source of the Magical powers for Nullify and Amplify to continue to be in effect. Whenever Amplify or Nullify is being used, a bit of his physical strength is drained. It all comes down to his endurance to determine the usage of his gifts. Nullifying Endurance - Although Nullify may take immediate effect, it is still dependent on the strength and power of the spell that is being nullified. If the spell is powerful, it make take some time for Ragnarok to fully neutralize the spell, and during the process, he continues to lose some of his physical strength over time. Non-erasable ability - There is no known way or Magical spell that can remove Ragnarok's God's Gifts. When he tried putting his hands together, there will be a minor explosion between hands which would force them apart and hurting him. Not a Mage - Ragnarok is not a mage, hence other than his Nullify, he has no other way of countering any Magical spells. Creator Notes What kind of character are you going for? I created Ragnarok to be Kimiko's silent bodyguard who owes his life to Kimiko. He is overprotective and may attack anyone whom he may deem as dangerous to Kimiko. He is also one who hates socializing and would only talk to others if necessary. The only person he felt comfortable talking is Kimiko, his savior. Any specific aspect of your character that you would like advice on?Probably the weakness parts. I still feel he is a little overpowered because of his God's Gifts. Is this an established character, or a new one?Ragnarok is a brand new character profile who I'm about to introduce into my story. Do you plan on using this character for multiple Fairy Tail RPs, or just one?Multiple Fairy Tail RPs, he would be teamed with Kimiko all the time and I will never use him as a solo character, since I made him to be a bodyguard to Kimiko. Other information:This is a brand new character who I've created to be Kimiko's partner and I may use him in future Fairy Tail RPs. Profile Skeleton a.k.a "The Skelly" If the character you're working on isn't due to be in an RP with it's own skeleton, use this one. It's assumed and likely best suited for a character based on the Fairy Tail manga/anime, but you can use it for other characters. Be sure to note if it is not a Fairy Tail character though. If any fields are not filled in, it assumed you need help with those aspects of your character. "Magical Abilities" can either be a description of what your character can do in general, or a list of spells and their effects. "Weaknesses" are supposed to be limits to your abilities, both magical and mundane. Something like, "would do anything for X" is a character flaw, not a weakness, and should be described under "Personality". How This Thread Works -If someone posts a character profile, I will post it under the "Current Topic" along with any specific requests made by the creator, such as, "Help with the Biography please" or "Are my powers at an appropriate level?" Profiles take precedence over other topics, and are given priority in chronological order. That means whoever posts first will be discussed first, then the second, then third, etc. -For character profiles, you will either use the profile skeleton I provide here (since I feel it should give others a good feel for your character) or use the skelly from the RP you plan on joining with that character. You can even ask for help for RPs outside the Guild, just be sure to provide us with details about the RP or a link to it! 4laugh -Character profiles will stay under the Current Topic for three days maximum if there are other profiles that are in line to be discussed. If you still want it discussed after those three days, you can link back to the post in a new reply asking for further discussion. Chronological order still applies though. -For some RPs, there is a small window of opportunity to submit your character profile. So, if you need quick-and-dirty advice on one aspect of a character for an RP that's almost full, post "URGENT" in all caps at the beginning of your post. Just be sure to provide details about the RP or a link to it. An URGENT profile will be posted along with the Current Topic, and both will be open for discussion. -You are more than welcome to critique profiles that are waiting to be discussed, but to be fair, please always provide feedback to the user in the Current Topic. -I will be using the poll to make announcements, such as when the Topic changes. Be sure to keep an eye on it! ►Thread Rules◄ 1. Follow Gaia's ToS and the Guild's rules. 2. When using the profile skeleton provided in this thread, do not change the layout AT ALL. No font size changes, no color changes, no making everything bold. Italics or brackets are recommended if you need to make notes about information within the profile. 3. A profile is considered "URGENT" if the time you would have to wait normally is longer than the time you have to submit the profile to take part in the RP it's intended for. 4. Understand that your character does not equal you (character =/= you). If someone says something about your character, do not take it personally and throw a fit. You posted your character for critique, and you are expected to take constructive criticism in a polite, mature manner. 5. With rule #4 in mind, do not be rude when critiquing a profile. Comments such as, "What kind of idiot makes that kind of character?" are NOT constructive. Prepare to be disciplined. 6. It's very likely I will ask you to edit your submitted profile and refuse to make it a topic if you deviate too far from the skeleton. 7. Do not quote the first page, or entire profiles. There is no post length limit, but it's easy for this kind of thread to get uber-long posts. All I ask is that you try to quote only the sections of a profile you absolutely need to to avoid things getting unwieldy too quickly. =3 8. If there is a profile as the Current Topic, please try to always give advice on it when you post, even if you're having a different conversation in this thread.

Extremely Useful Character Resources [NBS] The Lore by AmaiikoThis thread relating to our Battle System is a great resource when trying to figure out what kind of magic you want you mage to have. As even Amaiiko will tell you, these aren't "official" names for the powers, and you aren't restricted to just those. It's a great thread for magical inspiration! The Character Creation Thread by Arcturus HighwindA great thread that you should read at least twice. Wonderful insight into character creation.100 Questions to ask About Your RP CharacterExtremely useful to literally get into character. If you have a general idea of the character's background, answer these questions as the character you want to create. The Mary Sue Litmus Test The Writer's Mary Sue TestI recommend everyone try this out, just to see where their character stands. It's another one of those tools that can make you aware if you're projecting your wants onto your characters. The struck-out one is still useful, but I find the second one slightly better because at the end it gives you a "rating" of sorts, explains what areas your character may be lacking in, and gives suggestions to fix them up.So You Wanna Take it Outside, Huh? (Combat RP Guide) by WahoozermanThe second post has a list of different things people do when roleplaying AND creating characters that really can just ruin a roleplay. The thread is worth reading for that alone. However, it is a good read since we're bound to do a lot of fighting here in Fairy Tail.Tips for Character Creation - Always remember that your character is just that - a CHARACTER. They are not your children, they are. Not. You. I find that a surprising amount of people take their characters waaaay too seriously, and spazz when you ask them to change/tweak their character or criticize any aspect of the character. - Try not to copypasta your character built for one RP into another RP. Especially if the settings/universes are completely different. I doubt your Naruto OC is going to fit into a steampunk RP. Not just in powers, but in personality and background too, and that's horrible because those two things are what really define a character. Feel free to keep the name and sex from your previous character, but more often than not each RP you join will require you to do some major re-tooling of who your character is essentially if you want to fit into the RP, and let others enjoy it too. I can tell you that trying to shoe horn a character based on one universe into a different one leads to a dissatisfying roleplay experience. It really separates your character and makes it difficult to connect with other characters. It probably really annoys the other RPers too. Wouldn't it be frustrating if someone in a Fairy Tail RP had a character that was a 1000 year old (but looked 24) elven king in a mech-suit with laser eyes named Leu'din'ayer? Elves in Fairy Tail likely aren't very similar to the Elves in your previous RP, so you'd probably want to change your race. Also, in Fairy Tail living to be that old is extremely rare. Like both the age and the name, you better have a DAMN GOOD explanation in your bio for everything. I can tell you right now that if I was hosting the RP, I would outright reject this character. If you're reusing a character idea, be sure to look through not only your character's powers, age, and race, but also the biography. Ask yourself, "Does this make sense in the context of this RP?" Someone trained in the ways of the katana and kung fu does not make sense in a medieval Europe RP. A more specific question you should ask yourself, in addition, for series-based RPs, "Does this contradict series-established lore?" Whether that matters or not is entirely up to the Host of the RP, but it's better if your history/biography matches up with the events described in the RP at the very least. - Try something different once in a while. If you've roleplayed on Gaia before, you'll likely notice that most OCs are between the ages of 13-21. This is because most people on Gaia are between those ages in real life. I understand that a 16 year old will have a hard time feigning the life experience of a 30 year old in an RP, but that doesn't mean you can't go younger, or even maybe five years older than you really are. Maybe try making a character of the opposite sex. The most common thing I see is that a character's personality is a mix of stereotypical good/evil traits and the creator's own personality. OR the character's personality is how the creator wishes they were like. A socially awkward 16 year old boy might (and in many cases do) make a 16-21 year old character, who's outgoing, handsome, and has to beat ladies off him hourly, lest he suffocate. The moral of the story is to try different things for age, sex, and personality if you find yourself becoming bored with RPing. - Give your character room to grow. This is even more important if you plan on using the same character in the same universe in similar RPs, or if the RP doesn't have a definite "end." You'll have very little to actually do if you're already a master at what you claim your character to have only skills in. If it gets to the point where the only way to have your character to grow is to add new and unrelated powers, then you know you started out too strong. One of the biggest advantages of an "apprentice" type character is that getting better at your chosen skill is an RP adventure all by itself! If you have limits built into your character, there's virtually zero chance of you having to worry, "Is this God-Modding?" Although, it should be noted that sometimes an RP revolves around the experiences of a Badass Crew, at which point your character will have some sort of specialization in which they are the best in the group. Remember, it all depends on how you roleplay! - "Min-maxing." Don't do it. Min-maxing is when someone tries to "balance" their character's super-amazing powers by giving them a "weakness" that is totally unrelated to their powers. MANY MANY people do this, and that's why I had to clarify the Weaknesses section of the skelly. If you're a Fairy Tail fire mage, and I ask you what are your weaknesses, stuff like, "I really love candy," "I'm afraid of spiders," "I will do anything to help a woman in need," has NOTHING to do with your magic, and are realistically so obscure that they won't even have an impact on the outcome of a fight, let alone on your behavior in the actual RP. In an RP that asks for your weaknesses (especially in one with supernatural powers) they are asking, "What are the limits to your abilities?" Keep in mind that they must be realistic and fair to other RPers. Even if the skelly doesn't have a section for weaknesses, as the good littler RPer you are, you should already have your character's limits in mind. - The biography says a lot about not only your character, but you as well. I say this because there certain types of characters that are used a lot. An orphan or a hybrid of species that is highly unlikely (e.g. half demon + half angel, half werewolf + half vampire, and of course the infamous "three halves" - half-demon, half-vampire, half-catgirl) are probably the most common ones on Gaia. So common in fact, that many people see such backgrounds as half-assed attempts to make a character "interesting" or "complex" without actually taking the time to craft a legitimate history for the character. It seems some people just want to act like bad-assery on legs, and don't bother treating their character like a new person, needing a history or a goal or a driving force, because they subconsciously identify themselves as that character. If you can successfully separate yourself from your character, you'll find it's easier to create interesting histories and personalities, and therefore more characters you'll enjoy roleplaying as.

Base on the polls, it looks like more people are wanting people to critique their character profiles ^^ Anyway, I roleplay Kimiko the Illusionist. And I'm hosting Secret World RP. I was thinking of giving Kimiko a partner, because I've recently came up with a new character. He (yes, it is a guy) too is a character set in Kimiko's story (which I'm writing, The Life and Lies of Kimiko). I don't know whether I should create a seperate character for RP subforums, or put him with Kimiko (since in the story, after meeting Kimiko, he acts as a bodyguard as well as partner-in-crime for her) and in RP, I'd like to roleplay both Kimiko and him at the same time. So I'd love to hear your opinions on this. Oh by the way, the character I have created is named Ragnarok and mage classification is Chosen (well, he is not exactly a mage, look in the Lore: Book of Mages, to find out what is my classification of a Chosen).
Oh by the way, I'm learning a thing or two in becoming a Character Designer in school, so I will post up a little guide of what I've learnt on how to create a well-thought out character profile soon.

Heh, yeah, it's kinda funny that people chose that option but haven't posted profiles yet. ^_^; Hopefully they will soon! I would try filling out a separate profile for Ragnarok just to make sure he's a fully fleshed-out character, and then when submitting it for RPs, just combine his and Kimiko's if you plan on playing them at the same time. I actually have mixed feelings about playing more than one character. sweatdrop On one hand, it's a great way to have fast-paced conversations that you normally can't have in an RP, and you can use that as a unique way to develop both characters and express their personalities. On the other hand, I've seen the abuse of using two characters, and it doesn't end up pretty. I think if someone plans on creating and using two characters at the same time, they need to make sure that each character is able to stand on their own, and they aren't just two halves of one character. You know what I mean? One thing I see pretty often is an RPer wants a character to have powers A, B, C, X, Y, and Z, but they can't put them in one character because no one would accept it, so they simply give one character powers ABC and the other XYZ, and submit it. Characters with different personalities suffer from similar issues. The creator just wants their character to have so many different powers, so the character may be possessed by some other spirit/demon that gives them additional powers, sometimes different "form" that not only change power sets once again, but personality as well. I guess the main point of ANY thread on character creation is that you can do just about anything... if you develop it enough. rofl Also, if in the next few days no one submits their profile, I'll throw up the newest one I've been working on. 3nodding

I mean, you won't a bodyguard that needs protection from you instead of him protecting you right? XD I'll post Ragnarok's profile up here soon, so please let me know what you think about it. ^^
