Amalthea had been right to guess it would be a long night once the party got rolling. The full moon was big, bright and looming above them.. and she was feeling more anxious than normal, surrounded by the pride and feeling especially conscious of her rank. She hadn't been paid too much attention but she was overreacting to the attention she was getting so she had separated herself from the crowd and was hanging out by herself a short distance from the others, just watching. Her eyes searched the crowd, wondering if she might spot one of her sisters. Then maybe she would feel better.

The party had been something that he had never seen before. So many lions, so much celebration! His joyful heart could barely stand it. Being social wasn't his forté, but he did his best to mix and mingle, as well as be respectful in the areas that he needed to be. His pale eyes glanced around, curious as to why he hadn't seen a certain soul. Perhaps other duties kept them busy.

As he continued to linger around, he caught sight of her. Oh! Recognizing her right off the bat, he wandered towards her, intent on asking why she was avoiding the crowd. Why? It was a grand affair!

Amalthea didn't spot the familiar figure headed her way until much too late to make any effort to avoid it- once she spotted him, it would be far too obvious she had seen him. She remembered him, how happy and friendly he had been.. and she immediately felt guilty for how awkward she had been and ultimately running away.. even if he didn't seem unhappy as he was walking toward her. She shuffled around a bit but didn't really go anywhere, looking at her feet but forcing herself to look back up when he was close.. and then she couldn't find her voice fast enough.

"Hello!" he said, a goofy grin gracing his features. He was relaxed, if curious, and the energy of the crowd had kept him happier than normal. If that was even possible. Hard to drag this fellow down. "Again, I should say."

He paused wanting to say the right thing, but unsure as how to start it. His main question was why, but that seemed too direct. How about getting there in a round-about matter?

"Are you enjoying yourself tonight?" he asked happily.

"Hello!" she squeaked when he greeted her, immediately feeling silly hearing her own voice. She didn't mean for her voice to be so high-pitched and now things were that much more awkward while she was being self-conscious about that. She didn't answer his question immediately, noticing that he looked just as cheerful and excited as he had the other time they'd spoken.. but now it made a little more sense, they were at a party, there was something to be excited about.

"Sure," she lied, offering a small, awkward smile, "You?"

"Well, certainly!" He answered. "There's so much going on, though it feels like there shouldn't be. Such a nice time to mingle and really get to know everyone else." Especially trying to match class with face, as he didn't want to stumble over a lord and not realize it. He could be foolish, but he didn't want to be that sort of foolish lion.

"It is great to see you again," he said with a smile. "Taking a break from the heart of the party? It can be a little overwhelming if one doesn't want to be conversing with so many different lions at once." Was making excuses for her, or himself? He was social, but he hadn't realized just how large this pride was until now. So many lions! And cubs, just being cubs.

"Yes, it's rare that the whole pride gets together to celebrate like this," she agreed, looking out over the gathering thoughtfully. Maybe if the party was for someone in the high class or royalty, most of the pride might show up.. but for the lower classes, a lot of the others didn't waste their time there. Her own welcome into the low class had been a very small gathering.

"It's good to see you," she returned, glancing back at him with a smile. However self-conscious she was, he was very friendly. But would it last? The way Nkosazana had changed when she realized Amalthea was a slave replayed in her mind and though she didn't realize it, she frowned.

Horatio's ears twitched as she noticed the frown. Perhaps she was disappointed in the party? One...well, one couldn't quite blame her if it wasn't up to one's expectations, or perhaps even just a bit too overwhelming. He enjoyed a good party, good conversation, but this one wasn't really getting anywhere.

"Are you alright?" he asked, lowering his head to get a good look at her. Just a little dizzy, perhaps?

"H-huh?"

She leaned back a bit when he lowered himself to get a better look at her and she did her best to keep on smiling but it was harder when she was being examined.

"I'm fine, I am," she said, her ears turned back and looking more anxious even as she tried to insist she was fine.

"Wouldn't you be having more fun talking to somebody else?" she asked quietly after another moment's hesitation.

He watched her intently, wondering what it was. A game, perhaps? Did he need to guess what was wrong with her? He was thinking so, but she said she was fine. Even if she didn't look fine. So which one was the truth?

Before he felt he could get to the bottom of it, he was distracted by her question. Quite a silly one, too. "More fun? That would mean that you arne't fun, and I would hearitly have to disagree with you, Amalthea."

"What? How have I been any fun?"

Amalthea was genuinely surprised by what he said and she seemed to completely forget that she was so scared for a moment- and once she realized the tone she had used, her ears flattened once again and she regretted it.. but she wouldn't withdraw her question.

"I'm sorry, I just.. you're being too nice."

A little surprised, he cocked his head to the side. "Well, you are speaking with me, aren't you?" He offered her a smile. "Better than ignoring me and walking off, wouldn't you say?"

He shuffled his feet a little, making himself more comfortable. "I'm not being too nice. You're being...quite shy, I would say. It's quite alright, though. I apologize for getting too close." And he took a couple steps backwards. Really, perhaps he had invaded a personal space of hers without realizing it. Nothing was the same everywhere, and he needed to remember that.

Amalthea watched with surprise as he took some steps back and away from her, the realization of what she was doing to herself hitting her very suddenly. Someone was being nice to her and even though he'd still somehow gotten a good impression of her, she was pushing him away. She was isolating herself, she'd been doing it since she had become a slave.

"I- I'm sorry!" she sounded more alarmed now than she had when he'd said he was having fun, "I'm a slave, that's why I've been acting so strange, I can never tell how someone will react."

She obviously hadn't reacted very well, why should expect more from anybody else?

He blinked. It really took him a moment to take it all in, what just happened. It gave him a few answers, but it did give him one large question. He took a deep breath before asking it, stalling a bit. Since....it seemed silly.

"So?" he asked. Probably not what Amalthea was anticipating, with her reaction to him. "What does that matter? I like being around you for who you are, not your rank."

Mind, it had come as a surprise to him, but as he hadn't been raised in a ranking system, it was more difficult for his mind to grasp the concept. She was of a lower rank, but why would that impede on their conversation, or meetings? He felt that it shouldn't.

Her ears flattened once again, feeling silly once again but now in a completely different way. Her worries left her but they were quickly replaced with guilt- even though he didn't seem to be taking it badly that she had assumed he might not like her if he knew she was only a slave.

"I guess it doesn't," she said and smiling genuinely for the first time all day.
