I really want to learn japanese, but my Random house Japanese coursebook has a stupid CD that you have to play of else you mispronunciate. (of coarse i haven't been listening to them so i have mispronounced all U's in sentences.) So can anyone please recommend a good coursebook to me? Doozo? [A couple months later...] Well, Now after reading through my book a few times, I am pretty sucessful. Also I would like to Add that I am starting to learn kana and hiragana ( My thoughts were, first learn some of the language, then work on both the letters and the language.) Just yesturday I finally found " Kana De Manga" and "Kanji De Manga" at the bookstore, and only 9 dollars a piece! In one day I have memorized how to write the vowels out in both Hiragana and kana 3nodding for even more convieniance (I think I spelled that wrong....) I am gonna list the books that were mentioned in the thread so far: Genki Books Yookoso Japanese for Busy People Minna no Nihongo Japanese for Everyone Point and Speak: Japan (English Edition) Shin Nihongo no Kiso Japanese for College Students
For learning how to write (specifically) Kana De Manga Kanji De Manga

my school uses "Yookoso" and it's a pretty good book, but their expensive (cause college likes to take students money biggrin ) They also come with CDs (I'm a little confused about your problem with your current book, do you not have the CDs that are made to go with them?) Barnes & Noble and Borders probably has a selection of cheaper books if you live near one. You can also check out the Learning Japanese thread for more sites and books.

I used "Japanese for busy people" which I think is a good book if you want to learn a lot fast but not go very in-depth with details (your techer will go over the details with you anyway).

My teacher uses "Genki." It seems to work pretty well. I started off with "Japanese for College Students," but it can be pretty confusing without help.

I used Shin nihongo no kiso. They have grammer books and vocab books and verb books ect. There arent really any pictures or, unless you buy the exercise book, exercises in the grammer book. But they are straightforward and too the point and if you havent the paitence to read everything in Japanese text, they are in english. But yes, Genki is the one they use in first year university so I would assume its good.

I like a book called "Japanese for Everyone"
It can take a little bit of getting used to because it assumes you know the kana inside and out by the 4th chapter...but I like the fast paced yet very understandable layout of the book. Plus, it has lots of graphics so it is easy to follow.
It might be a little hard to use without a class/teacher if you are totally completely new to Japanese, but if you are at least familiar with the language then it is very good!
