Getting away from his darling older sister was no easy task, but he had managed to do it - while his brother Cain had always told him that he was stupid, Karius is actually rather smart when he does need to think. He paused, halting as he looked around, paranoid that his sister might be following him and waiting to drag him home; luckily, the forest seems quiet and there was no sign of the mare around... Of course, he reckoned it won't be long before she realizes that he's missing and come look for him.
He won't make it easy for her though.
Speeding up into a gallop, Karius kept flapping his wings as he leaped high into the air, trying to lift himself off the ground; while he had only visited once or twice since he popped out of his basket, he had seen his older brother do wonderful acrobatic acts in the sky... He made it look so easy! However, when he had tried, he couldn't even take off... He was told that his wings weren't fully developed yet and that there was a trick to it, but...
"What good are wings that can't fly?" He muttered softly to himself, slowing to a trot as he kept moving, folding his wings by his side as he sighed.

"Bouncing through the forest, the forest, the forest, I'm bouncing through the forest, because I like to bounce!"
Laureat was in an excellent mood. It was a lovely day, there was no wind, and he was, for the first time ever, out on his own. His enthusiasm knew no bounds, and being the sort of foal unable to hide any sorts of emotions, that enthusiasm poured forth in the form of his piping song and energetic bounding. Other Soquili might very well cringe at the lack of subtly in the foal's behavior; between the crashing and crunching of the undergrowth and his boisterous singing, his presence would be announced long before his bright hide came into sight.
Not that he was worried about stealth. This monumental occasion was meant to be celebrated, not held to his chest. He could be quiet when roaming around with either his twin sister or one of their parents; today, he was going to enjoy himself in the best way he knew: with volume!
"I'm bouncing through the forest..."

His ears twitched as he halted, tilting his head to a side - he could hear a voice getting louder with every passing second, signaling that it was most probably coming towards him. For a second, he panicked; his solo adventure hadn't started yet! However, as he stood still and continued to listen to the voice, he quickly realized that it wasn't calling out his name nor does it belong to a female - thank goodness!
The joy in the voice, however, made him curious and he found himself trotting towards the approaching character; he had heard that there are beings very much like his family around, but he had never seen them before... Trees, flowers, squirrels, the occasional fox were pretty to look at and admire, but he craved for more! That was partially the reason why he "escaped".
"And the forest is a wonderful place!" He sung back enthusiastically just as a bright red foal came into view. Immediately, Karius stopped, his eyes widening in surprise, although one could tell that he was excited from the fast pace of his voice, "You're redder than the flowers near my home! How beautiful an art of nature you are! And is that a rose hanging from your neck? How wonderful! I'm so glad I escaped today~!"

If Laureat had been paying attention to his surroundings, he might have noticed the bright golden foal BEFORE the other spoke up. But being a bit wrapped up in his own singing and bounding, it wasn't until the other foal's warbling broke in on his own song that he realized he wasn't alone. But he wasn't going to complain!
Being of a social bent and being from a large family, strangers were no problem for him. In his short life, he'd met many people already, all of them related to him and most of them resembling him to some extent. But aside of Lauriel, he's never met another foal, and he'd NEVER seen anyone so very yellow. If the other foal was fascinated by him, the fascination could be said to be mutual.
"Wow! You're like looking into the SUN, only it's like when the sun is starting to come up and it's kinda silvery whitish instead of BAM! yellow, you know? Because you don't make my eyes hurt." High praise, indeed, and spoken a mile a minute as Laureat looked the other foal up and down, then did the same to himself. "Am I? I'm red, but I'm red that's been out in the sun too long. You should see my Papa, or my biggest brother; THEY'RE really red. But I guess I'm redder than you, but you're yellower than me, and Yes! It is a rose, my Papa gave it to me, AND he gave me the chain, and he showed me where I can get a new rose when this one dies because it's a flower and so it'll die after a while because it's not in dirt any more, and what did you escape from?"
Energy, thy name is Laureat!

"Really? I do?" Karius paused for a second, looking down at his feet before breaking into a grin, "Well, my brother told me that my older sister dipped my basket in sunlit water, that's why I'm so golden, but I'm pretty sure its because my father is so golden as well! But yes, I'm really bright for some reason, brighter than my father!" It seems like the speed at which he was speaking could match Laureat's, although it was mainly due to his excitement at meeting a foal that wasn't his brother.
He than giggled, "Redder than you? That's cool! I've only seen flowers that are really, really red, although my sister told me once Autumn is near, the leaves will turn a lovely shade of red as well! I can't wait! And wow, really? I wonder if my father will give me anything when I'm older?" He paused before looking around in paranoia, as if expecting to see his sister lurking around the corner, "I escaped from my darling sister! She refuses to let me explore by myself, but I think I'm big enough already!"
He then wiggled his wings, noticing that the other foal has them too; how beautiful! They fit him completely! Ah, if only they were black like his own in order to match the rose hanging on his neck... What a pity!
"Oh oh! Can you fly? I want to learn, but my darling sister and mother can't fly and my older brother and father is not always around to teach me..."

"Ooh, that's so cool! I kinda wish that I'd been dipped in something as a baby, but water might not have worked that well for me, cause I wouldn't have known to hold my breath when I was a baby in a basket. You must have been a smart baby to not drown!" Laureat's admiration for the other foal was obvious, his bright grin and his round eyes indicating that point even more pronouncedly than his words or tone. It was all so very fascinating, the idea of an action affecting one's color! He knew that when you were embarrassed his face would get darker, but that was about all he had ever heard of with regards to influencing coat color.
Not that he had any complaints about his own coat; he loved being red and looking like his father and his brother. Red was an AWESOME color, after all, but there was just something neat about looking like the sun or a dandelion. Well, a faded dandelion. The other foal's mane was really yellow, but the rest of him was more glowy than anything...well, except his wings. His wings were cool, but they were so black!
However, his wandering attention was brought back to the point at the other foal's comment about his sister, and he was brought up short. "Escaping from your sister? Why would you need to escape from your sister? My sister, Lauriel? She's smaller than I am and doesn't really leave Mama that much at the moment, so there's not really any 'scaping involved. I have other sisters, but they are REALLY much older than me, and they're not around to 'scape from. Right now it's just me, Elly, and Mama. Elly's what I call my sister, and she calls me Atty. You can call me Atty too, if'n you want...or you can call me Laureat, on account of that's my name!" Beaming at the stranger, Laureat felt every inch the properly mannered foal. He'd just introduced himself, for the first time EVER!
But there was little time to bask in that success, as the other foal had asked a question near and dear to his heart. "No, I can't fly yet, but I'm starting to learn! My Papa is going to be teaching Lauriel an' me how to fly, but our wings aren't big enough yet. So we do exercises to make them strong and ready to fly when they ARE big enough." Rising up on his tip-toes, he extended his wings out to their maximum span, lifted them up as high as they would go, then swiftly drew them down, lifting himself up an inch off the ground for all of two seconds. "See?"

"I don't remember holding me breath though!" Karius replied with a giggle, nodding his head so much that it looked like it might fall off, "Although I guess I can't remember a lot of things that happened when I was in the basket. I just remember sleeping a lot, and sometimes hearing voices from outside when I do wake up! Although one day, the basket just felt too small for me, so I moved around a lot and pop! I was out, just like that!"
His eyes widened, "Really? My sister is much bigger and older than me! She follows me around and refuses to let me out of her sight! I had a hard time trying to escape from her! If she's around, I might not have gotten to meet you!" He leaned in closer, beaming at the other colt before giving him a nuzzle, "I'm Karius, my sister calls me darling brother but I don't think you can call me that."
The colt then stared in wonder as Laureat lifted himself off the ground, his own wings wiggling in excitement, "Wow! Wow! Can you teach me to do that?" He tried mimicking the other colt, but only managed to stir up dirt from the forest floor with a beat of his wings. Confused, he frowned, "I can't do it!"

Having such an attentive sibling seemed fascinatingly foreign to Laureat; Lauriel was the only sibling he saw on a regular basis, and if anyone watched anyone, it was him watching her. Not that he really needed to watch her much, on account of the fact that she was a lot more careful than him anyway and was good at watching herself. Really, it could be said that they watched each other, except when they were split up. Right now Mama was probably doing a good job watching Elly, and he was watching himself. And now he could help watch Karius, too, if the other foal needed to be watched! They could help keep each other out of trouble or danger, and then Karius' sister wouldn't have to worry!
Laureat's eyes lit up as he came to that realization, beaming brightly at the other foal as he announced, "Well, now that we're both here we can watch each OTHER, and we don't have to worry about getting stolen away or falling into a hole or something. I bet your sister would be happy to know that, if'n she was around, but since she's not you can tell her about it later and then she'll know that she doesn't have to watch you so close later! Then maybe you won't have to escape, you can just leave!" And excellent plan, and one all the better because it meant that HE got to play with a new friend!
Returning the nuzzle, he glowed at the other colt. "Karius is a neat name. Darling brother is awful long, and it sounds like the sort of thing that you'd really only say to a brother anyway. You're cool, but since we're not brothers I'll call you Karius. Unless we get to be the kind of frineds who call each other other names..." Cocking his head to one side, Laureat considered for a moment before bursting out, "Can I call you Rius? Cause if I call you by a short name, that would mean we were really and truly friends, and that would be SO COOL! I've never had a friend that wasn't family yet." Not that there was anything wrong with family, it was just nice to have a friend who didn't HAVE to be a friend. SO exciting!
Though the name thing paled in importance to the realization that he could actually teach something! At Karius's failed attempt to lift off, Laureat was struck with the knowledge that he knew something that the other didn't. Immediately he was filled with a great sense of importance, mingled with delight at being able to share his knowledge. "Well, I can try!"

"Oh! I never thought of that! That sounds like a great idea!" Karius wiggled his body with excitement, eyes widening a little as he grinned, nodding at the suggestion. He never had the chance to watch anyone... His favorite brother Cain was a lot smarter than he was, after all, and could take care of himself. He was also fairly sure that his older brothers knew what they were doing too; it was just him... Or rather Phia watching him. She is just so protective that its rather suffocating at times... How does soon-to-be Brother Axel stand it?
"Yes, yes you may! I never had the chance to have a friend that was not family either!" He was grinning so hard now that his face looked stretched, happy that the nuzzle was returned and liking the idea of a 'family outside the family'. Although, if he's family, then he must be like him! Suddenly, the red foal didn't look 'too red' anymore; he looked just right... Karius paused, staring at the other foal for a few seconds before smiling again, his face lighting up, "And then may I call you Lau? Or would you prefer Reat?"
He was wanted to be able to give the foal a nickname too!
His eyes widened as she leaped into the air, clearly excited, "Wow, really? Really, really?" He was going to learn to fly! Well, get his hoofs off the ground, but that was close enough right? Maybe this would even give him a head start to flying when compared to his brothers!

"Oh, call me Lau! Reet sounds like something that my older sister would call me if she wanted to tease, Lau sounds so much cooler. And then we could put our names together and we could be Lau-Rius! Like a super-combo Soquili!" Whatever a super combo Soquili was, it sounded super cool. And he and Karius would make an awesome super-combo, at any rate; they were both so colorful and so bright, they would DAZZLE anyone that they encountered!
Especially when they were both able to fly.
"Yes, really! Just watch me, and do what I do. Only you'll have to do it faster, because you have to be fast for it to work. What you want to do is spread your wings super-wide, like this." Adopting a solemn expression, Laureat spread wide his wings to their full extent, holding them out about his body and then giving Karius and expectant look. "It's very important to have them open wide, but don't spread your wingtip feathers too far. You need to have them like this, with the feathers together, so that they can scoop the air away."

"I like Lau! Let's go with Lau then!" He nodded so quickly that his head was a blur, a wide grin on his maw. Wiggling his rump, Karius' eyes widened, his voice filled with awe as he giggled, "That sounds so cool... Lau-Rius... A super-combo Soquili? Lau-Rius, the best super-combo Soquili EVER!" He practically yelled out the last best; he didn't really understand what it meant, but Lau must know what he is talking about, right? Besides, it sounded really special!
He stayed silent when the other colt begun to instruct, staring intently at Lau's demonstration as he tried to put on a serious face. He nodded often to show that he was listening, whispering a soft "Alright!" when it was his turn. Echoing the given instructions softly, he spread his own wings out to their full extent and went on to imitate what Lau had done. Keeping his wingtip feathers close together was difficult, but he eventually got the hang of it.
When he was finally satisfied, he looked up at his friend, "How's this?"

It was truly awesome, finding a friend like Karius. Laureat had never before encountered another Soquili that would throw itself so wholeheartedly into Laureat's ideas and plans. Lauriel, his adored twin sister, admired and adored him, but his ideas often seemed overwhelming to her. His father and mother laughed and patted him on the head, agreeing that he was spirited and he ought to run with his ideas, but even a foal knows the difference between full acceptance of the idea and indulgence of a whim. This was different; this was a friend! A friend who voluntarily thought that a super-combo Soquili was an awesome idea...whatever it was.
This was just awesome!
A hint of a smile started to invade Laureat's 'teacher face' as he surveyed his friend's progress. At one point, he carefully poked at Karius' left wingtip, nudging the feathers a bit closer together, but otherwise he just stood and watched. "That looks great! Now you an try flapping!" Breaking into a full-blown grin, he re-spread his own wings and flapped in a swift downward burst, lifting himself an inch or so off the ground. "Just like that!"
