The grey lioness had never hunted on her own. Now that her mother had thrown her own, the adolescent was trying to learn on her own. It wasn't easy. She knew, vaguely, that adult lions hunted big animals like gnus and zebras and things. Big, scary animals with big hooves and horns and chompy teeth. Eeek.
Right now, she was crouched in front of a promising hole in the ground. Holes in the ground were more manageable than big horrible kicky bitey animals. There was something in the hole, and eventually it would have to come out. And then she could catch it! And eat it! Yum. The grey lioness lay there patiently. For minutes. And minutes. Ugh. When was the animal going to come out? Maybe she should be a more active hunter. Throwing caution to the wind, she stuck her paw down the hole ...
"YOWCH!" The lioness squealed, rolling head over tail as she scrambled backwards, trying to get away from the irritable mouse that had bitten her toe.

Namir was hunting. Luckily for the adolescent lion he was taught to hunt by his mother and aunts in preparation of this day. The coming of age quest was something all Pesars are aware of so learning to hunt was a important skill after all until they got there own banu's the males have to hunt for themselves.
So far during his quest Namir stuck with rabbits and other small creatures but he decided that today he was going to try for something a bit larger, a gazelle. The young lion knew he wouldn't likely catch one but it never really hurt to try.
A lone male was grazing in his territory. The small male's light brown coat blended in with the grass but Namir could still spot him, the same grass hiding the gazelle hid him as well. He snuck up on the male and was about to pounce when a loud squeal startled both Namir and the gazelle. They both took off running, Namir towards the shot and the gazelle in the opposite direction.
Namir saw a gray lioness scrambling backwards away from something. "Hello?" He called out, keeping a bit of a distance in case it was a snake the lioness was trying to get away from, or if the lioness wasn't in the mood for company.

Hello? Now the mouse was talking to her? She didn't know mice could talk! Maybe it was a mighty God of Mice, and she had angered it. Uh oh. Alarmed, the grey lioness looked about, ready to run from the wrath of the Mouse God, and saw --
A lion.
She blinked, bewildered. How had this strange blue lion snuck up on her? She hadn't been that distracted ... had she? Maybe he was a servant of the angry Mouse! Oh dear. She flopped forward immediately, making an awkward bow. "I'm sorry!" She called. "I didn't mean to bother your mouse!" Actually, now that the pain from the bite was fading, the thought of eating the mouse was sounding tempting again. God or no God, she was hungry. "I'm hungry," she added plaintively.

Namir was speechless as the gray lioness made a awkward bow. "Mouse? What mouse?" What was with the 'your mouse' comment? Namir kept that last part to himself since it wasn't all that polite and he had a feeling that with this female polite and nice would be the way to go.
"You're hungry?" Namir made a mental leap between her being hungry and and the comment about the mouse. "You were hunting a mouse! Well food we can take care off or at least we can try." That at least was fairly easy, maybe, if it can be done.

Despite scaring her, the strange male seemed ... nice. The grey lioness wasn't used to people being nice to her. If she had been the suspicious type, she might have assumed he was playing a trick on her.
She wasn't smart enough to be suspicious, though. She smiled slowly. "Food!" She liked food! No one had ever gotten her food before! "Do you like food too? Do you know where food is?" The lioness jumped up suddenly and ran about him in a circle. No, he didn't seem to have any food with him. Her head drooped sadly for a second, and then she perked back up. He had said they would get food, right? Then it must be somewhere else! Right! "Let's go get some food! Can we go now?" She bounced from paw to paw with delight, unable to hold still.

Namir watched as she ran around him in circles, extremely excited. Has no one taken this lioness, who was near his age hunting before. This puzzled the young male because he came from a family and a pride that taught females to hunt and most of the males as well. Not knowing how to hunt was inexcusable but it seemed that this lioness was not raised that way.
Her reaction and movements made Namir think of a young cub so he smiled indulgently when she bounced impatiently for him to say something. "Yes we can go now but it might take some time and we will have to hunt for it." Not entirely sure if she understood the difference between hunting for food and just getting food, Namir tried to explain, "We are going to have to find something and hunt it like you were trying to do with that mouse."

The stranger was so nice! He wasn't even annoyed by her prancing. She had half-expected him to smack her, but she just couldn't help herself. She was too excited! And not only was he NOT smacking her, he was smiling, and promising to take her on a real hunt.
The grey lioness was vaguely aware of what hunting was. She knew that big lions, grown up lions, went on hunts all the time. But she had never been taught to hunt, never even been invited on one. "Ooo, you know how to hunt stuff? What kind of stuff? Even big stuff? Can we hunt a giraffe?" That seemed improbable, but as far as she knew lions hunted giraffes all the time.

"Yes, everyone should know how to hunt in my family unless there is a reason why you can't. Um, things like rabbits, gazelle, antelope, with help I've know others to bring down zebra and water buck. Hunting big stuff takes a lot of skill that I dont have, as well as help that we dont have either. A giraffe is 'big stuff' so I'm going to have to say no on that one." Namir answered this gray lionesses question in the same order she asked them. He's done such rambling questions before so he saw no problems answering them the same way. "My name is Namir by the way and I think that right now it would be best to hunt rabbits. They are quick and yet plentiful."

The grey lioness watched the blue lion, listening carefully to his words. Her eyes glazed over slightly as he answered her questions. She nodded her head slowly as though agreeing to everything he said. The young lioness would have agreed if he told her that he hunted using his tail as a lasso. She really was clueless about this kind of thing.
"My mom never gave me nothing but scraps," She said cheerfully. "I don't think I ever ate a rabbit, but maybe I did. Scraps all kind of look, you know, the same." The lioness tried to stand as proudly as she could, like a mighty hunter instead of the scruffy grey thing she was. "I'll hunt rabbits with you Namir! I'd tell you my name too but my mom never gave me one, or if she did I forgot it."

Namir was shocked, just scraps? He knew life was hard out in the rouge lands his mother told him some but while he knew she kept the worst parts out of her tales she never said anything like that, nor had his father. Since his mother grew up mostly without a mother that might explain it but not his father and that was most defiantly not how they raised him and his siblings.
Not sure what exactly to say to that revelation Namir skipped it and responded to the second part of the conversation. But that caused just as much trouble for Namir as the first part, after all he didn't think it was polite to express his surprise over the fact that she had no name. "Well um, ok but I think I have to call you something since well it would just be politer. How about I just call you Gray?"

The grey lioness was unaware of how boggled Namir was by her. She had a perfectly normal lion life, as far as she was aware. And Namir was a very nice lion. She was very happy to have made such a nice friend. "Okay!" She said happily. Her mother had sometimes called her 'Gray one', so the name wasn't strange to her. "I can be Gray."
Enough talking! She wanted to hunt something! Manyara peered about, looking for rabbits in hiding. It had never occurred to her to hunt something so big and bouncy. Things much larger than mice intimidated her. But with Namir at her side, she was confident that they could take down even an elephant if they wanted to. "Let's go find some rabbits to hunt!"

"Yes lets Gray." Namir picked up her energy and was more then ready to go hunting. It didn't take him long to find a likely spot to ambush a rabbit. He quickly explained what he was doing; after all if you give a rabbit to a lion you feed her for a day but if you teach her to hunt you feed her for life. He motioned her for silence and stillness. The patience hunter would win when it came to such nervous prey.
Namir was just beginning to think that maybe this wasn't such a good idea when low and behold a rabbit did indeed pop out of the hole. He waved at Gray trying to silently tell her to watch but not do anything right before he sprang at the bunny. It raced back at its hole but it had gotten far enough away as Namir silently watched it that the large blue lion beat it to it. With the speed and agility of all rabbits it changed course and Namir was right after it. It was a short chase and Namir came trotting back to Gray with his kill. He placed it in front of her, "eat but remember then you try."

It was hard to remain quiet when she was so excited, but the grey lioness managed to restrain herself. She frowned in concentration as she watched the blue lion work. Sneaking around to catch the rabbit ... okay, got it. She knew about trying to be quiet and unobtrusive. She had just never been quiet aggressively, as it were.
Obeying Namir's instruction, the grey lioness remained perfectly still when the rabbit appeared, watching intently as he chased and caught it. "Wow! You're a great hunter, Namir!" she called cheerfully as he walked back to her.
And then he laid the rabbit on the ground before her. She stared down at it as though she had never seen such a thing. Eat? Perplexed, the grey lioness looked up at Namir. No one had ever offered her something so nice before, and certainly never before they ate themselves. It seemed ... wrong, to eat the rabbit before Namir. But she didn't want to turn him down and upset him. "No ... I'll catch my own rabbit," she said slowly, awkwardly at first and then with growing cheerfulness. He had shown her how, hadn't he?
Copying Namir's actions, she slunk along, looking for a spot like the last one and settled down to wait. The wait wasn't as long this time before a rabbit hopped out of cover. She charged after it, but it was quicker than her, zipping around in a loop and back into its burrow. The grey lioness skidded to a halt, dusty and tired but not disheartened.
"Oh well. I'll catch one another day," she said, smiling at her new friend. "Thanks for showin' me how."

Namir felt proud when Gray turned down his offer of the rabbit, if she said she was going to catch her own then she was going to catch her own. He smiled and watched what she did with a critical eye to see if he could offer any suggestions.
When she returned without a rabbit Namir gestured to his catch again, "You did a really good job and I know you'll get the next one but we shouldn't let this one go to waste so enjoy." He smiled and was quite proud that he was able to teach another to hunt, even if it was rabbits it wasn't much of a leap to larger prey. "Gray just one suggestion... let the rabbit get a bit farther away from its hole. Speed comes with practice." He laughed softly and smiled at his new friend. It was always great meeting new friends.

The grey lioness - Gray, for now - nodded happily at Namir's suggestions and compliments. He was a very nice lion, that was for sure. She might not be too bright, she knew that, but he was nice to her anyways and helping her learn important stuff. It was nice making new friends.
"Okay! I'll remember that for next time," she said firmly, committing it to memory. Later on she would go over it in her head so that she wouldn't forget. No, she mustn't forget.
Now that she had done some hunting herself, she felt more comfortable accepting his 'gift'. She neatly tore the rabbit in half and wolfed her half down, beaming with delight. When she was done the grey lioness smiled at her new friend. "Thanks for your help Namir, it was nice meeting you! I'll see you again some day." With that goodbye she trotted off, humming to herself. It didn't even occur to her that she might want to stay with her new friend. She had never met anyone that desired her company over a long period of time. Maybe she would see him again, or maybe not. Either way, it had been nice to meet him.
