There was a magical time in the history of television where some of the greatest programming aimed at children and teens could all be found in one place. Being a kid of that generation, I have to say that we are the lucky ones. People who grew up in the 80's had it alright, but they weren't as lucky as us who grew up in the 90's. Today, they have it bad. It's like we lost the creators of shows because of parental paranoia. It wasn't just about TV, it was a decade of epic videogames and some of the coolest toys one could buy. Being a kid in the 1990's rocked and it was fun. But that was icing on the cake compared to the TV shows that the 90's spawned. I'm talking about Bill Nye the Science Guy, Pete and Pete, Rocko's Modern Life, Dexter's lab and so many more good sets of grand TV.
The Early ages Before Nick or Cartoon Network became popular, most good cartoons aired on public TV. These included shows such as Baby Muppets, Thundercats, Garfield & friends and the works. This is where Saturday morning cartoons truly picked up. One of the key things is that Networks made shows based on Videogames such as Mario and Sonic. They made relative success, but this showed early on that TV for kids was becoming successful.
The Early 90's. The Nickelodeon years Some of the greatest shows ever made came from Nick and this age of time it came from. In the 1990's, the first noteworthy show to watch on that channel was Rugrats. Humorous and slightly crude, it made the channel popular. They then started to air Ren and Stimpy. This show was to the cartoon word as Married with Children was to the sitcom world. The level of vulgarity helped pave the way to my favorite cartoon of all time , Rocko's Modern Life. Ren and Stimpy changed the limits to kids shows in a way that revamped the entire culture. We started to have many other shows that emulated greatness from the station. Not only did it excel in the cartoon department, but it did wonderful as well by introducing great children sitcoms such as Clarissa, Salute your Shorts, fucking Pete and Pete, they even came out with a horror show for kids called "Are you Afraid of the Dark?" There has never been anything more badass than that era of Nickelodeon.
Late 90's. The Cartoon Network Era While Nickelodeon was still thriving, it's sitcom sector was starting to dwindle. With mediocre shows like Land of the Lost and Space Cases, they concentrated more on the cartoon side and left the sitcoms to Snick. Meanwhile, Cartoon Network became more popular. In 1996, they came out with Dexter's Lab and I am Weasel in 97. It started a trend that created Cow & Chicken. Then Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog and many of the greatest shows in the late 90's
1999. The Golden Year of Fox In 1999, Cartoons for kids were great. Nothing could be better, but in the primetime category, Fox had several shows that kids watched. At this point, kids were old enough to like the shows. The Simpsons hit it's peak in 1999 and Fox introduced several new shows such as Malcolm in the Middle, Futurama and the very popular Family Guy. Such shows were like an encore to the very awesome decade of the 90's.
2004. The decline of Kid's shows When the new Millennium came around, the shows we knew and loved were still kicking. Nick Created Invader Zim and Fairly Odd Parents. Cartoon Network came up with adult Swim and kept making new episodes of the classic Cartoon Network shows. It was however short lasted, Family Guy was canceled in 2001, Futurama in 2003. The old shows on Cartoon Network were getting phazed out by the the newer and less worthy shows like the Kids Next Door and the likes. It finally died when they came out Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. On the Nickelodeon side, they canceled Invader Zim and the Fairly Odd Parents lived a surprisingly long time, but the age of good kids shows were dead. Replaced by shitty shows and never recovered. Luckily for us, We still have Family Guy, South Park and Futurama. The Simpsons however are done for.

you are right most of the time. the Simpsons is still great and will always be great. Futurama is back on and with new episode on comedy central. Family guy is still popular and is still having new episodes on Fox. all of the old cartoons an be viewed on Nick Toons and Boomerang. now i have to say that i like The Kids Next Door. that was good show but then after that all other cartoon shows just went down the drain.

You missed almost all of the great 90s shows. Not even a mention of TMNT? What is this scream The great shows were the ones with real villians. Not something like Dee Dee clicking buttons in a laboratory. No, villains whos soul purpose was to destroy.
Shows like Dragon Flyz, Gargoyles, even the Smurfs! These were good shows. Have you ever watched the movie Small Soldiers? Those were what the 90s were about! (Also you beat me too this thread. I was going to make it today D<)

Myself coming from '93, I was fortunate enough to witness the best of it. It's kind of funny, I had this whole conversation last night in an art thread. It brought back so many memories.

I was in an art thread, and we were talking about all the old shows from the 90s. Dragon flyz, gargoyles, the banned loony toons episode where they showed the evil of alcohol, even one of my all time favorites, freakazoid. All the good shows that are all but forgotten these days.
