I went to a gathering recently where we had a basic commune set up. We used water from the river, took turns cooking and even taught classes. I went to a kombcha skill share and cleaned the kitchen. I spent a lot of time swimming in the river. It was amazing there were people 1 to 35 years old. There were children's workshops and survivalist skill shares. We had an open mic"less" night.

Has anyone else had experiences with communes or community activities?

From what I've seen, local community efforts, no electricity - plumbing around has been the most sustainable living. Would you live like this?

I'd be willing to give it a shot. Though i do enjoy the resources that the internet puts at my finger tips. Indoor plumbing is also quite nice as i live in an area where summer temps reach 110 degree's and winter temps dip to -25 degrees. But a local community effort in raising meat and vegetables would be quite nice. Rabbits seem to be a super sustainable source of meat. The survivalist skill share intrigues me, what kinda skills did you/other people share about it?

The thing about communing is that it's not just about raising your food. You have to find someone who knows about sustainable power and how to work with the electricity, humanure, chopping wood, clothes making, everything that you do and use in your daily life would be coming from those around you.

I went to a kombucha workshop because I've had one sitting around for a while and I didn't really know how to take care of it. I didn't have internet at the time either.

The primitive skills workshops always tend to be very interesting. I also went to a medicinal herb workshop.

I'm currently watching BBC's Tribe and today I saw how the Anuta live. They live on a tiny island in the middle of nowhere and the community of 240 people all pool their resources. For each fishing trip, the catch is divided equally among the 24 families. Crops are tendered by each family but during harvest it's divided equally. It was very cool and interesting to watch. (I think all the tribes from the show share amongst the rest, albeit not as equally.)

I don't think I can live completely cut off. Like sunset, I adore the Internet and it's wonders. My cats, which are my life and love, are indoor only (out with leashes) and that wouldn't really fly with the lifestyle.

In watching Tribe I've seen many "primitive" cultures that are not as sustainable as we Westerners would think. As in cutting an entire tree down to get a single bee hive. (Because it's easier now than traditionally because they now have metal tools.)

You'll have to share your kombucha learnings. I'm going to be getting a mother shortly and am curious on how to nurture her.

I could probably never live like that. I'm not a people person.
