She was born to a young couple who just weren't financially able to raise a child, so she was adopted by an older couple the moment she was born. A quiet, well-mannered child, she had a pleasant childhood. However, she developed a rather old-man-like disposition after a bad family falling out when she got pregnant back in junior high. It created a fairly large rift in the family and her parents have long since moved away out of embarrassment and anger. They only speak periodically using Nanami's little brother as a medium. Sixteen years later, and she's managed to build a fairly stable life for herself and Haruka, although she hates talking about it. Although she's remarkably lazy and relies on Yuuto for a lot of things, she tries hard to be an independent, good role model for her daughter. Now that she's out of her twenties, she's trying to be more serious about her own future. She is relaxed and mature, with a good common sense and instincts. She's the type to take life one step at a time and not stress over meaningless things.
Although she is fiercely independent and seems to have everything in control, Nanami is very sensitive towards criticism. She keeps a sealed letter from Haruka's father in her dresser drawer, and refuses to open it because she's afraid of the contents.

He was adopted by Yurika and Hajime Koyama, a well-off couple who had adopted a little girl a few years before and were looking to find her a sibling. Yuuto was adopted when he was just a few months old and quickly became the son they always wanted. While his sister was simply obedient, he was so devoted to following his parents' every wish and command that he failed to develop much of a personality of his own. He did well in school, participated in the clubs his parents thought were appropriate. However, this happy family life didn't last long; when his sister announced she was pregnant, all hell broke loose. When he was eleven years old, he moved away from his childhood home to the United States, leaving his beloved sister behind. Nanami and Yuuto continued to keep in touch, and Yuuto acted as the only link between his parents and their granddaughter.
He went to college and studied the thing that he thought would help him the most after graduation. And, of course, when his graduation rolled around, he wasn't ready to enter the workforce, so he continued onto graduate school. He paid for this himself, because he felt guilty taking his parents' money. Even though he had his Master's, he struggled to find a job, thanks to a competitive workforce and a worldwide recession. That's when he decided to go to Nirvani for the first time in fifteen years. He got a job as a teacher, despite no real passion for teaching, and settled into a satisfactory life. He's always gone through life the logical way; selecting the major and careers that were most practical. However smart he may be, he's dense and can sometimes be a complete doormat, not realizing that he's supporting people so entirely. Which is why he has all of a sudden started paying his sister's bills.

She's never met her grandparents and her uncle was gone for most of her life, and so Nanami filled both roles of mother and father. The two are almost more like best friends than mother and child. Because she admires her mother so much, she has always tried to emulate her role model. Armed with a fierce personality and a stubborn independent streak, she found that she didn't have to try very hard to be like her mother; in fact, she had inherited many of Nanami's traits. Like many teenagers, she's very focused on her own likes and interests to the point where she'll forget about everything else. She's grown to be very mature, not only because she takes care of most of the chores around the house, but because she looks older than she is, and has always been treated as an adult. She's incredibly fashion-conscious, using what little time she's not spending in school or cooking meals to work on her appearance. She has a casual, matter-of-fact way of speaking that she struggles to control; it often comes off as rude, and she almost always regrets later. She's the type to act like nothing bothers her (mostly because she doesn't notice), then realize later on with violent embarrassment.
Her high school days were uneventful at best, as she focused most of her time and energy into her appearance, her fashion, and getting a job at the salon. Now that she has the job she wants, maybe she'll think about broadening the other aspects of her life as well.

• • • BACKGROUND
Nanami Nanami definitely was one of the more fortunate ones as far as childhoods go. She was born to a young college student and her soldier husband. The two, although intelligent and madly in love, just didn't have the resources to raise a baby. With Nanami's father overseas most of the time and her mother trying to make it into medical school, a baby was the last thing they needed. Although their religion prevented them from aborting the infant in the first place, they were both smart and mature enough to arrange to have the baby adopted the moment it was born.
Nanami was only moments old when she was passed from her birth mother to her adopted mother. Her parents were smart, capable, and had already secured themselves a stable lifestyle. They lived out on Nirvani, owned a successful business, and prided themselves as being one of the upper class families of the island. Nanami had practically everything she could need, as did her brother, Yuuto, who was adopted a few years later. Nanami was raised to be a polite, quiet, little doll of a girl, which she was for a good amount of time. She did her homework, she was polite and quiet around adults, and she never argued or got into fights. She did what her parents told her, and for a while she was happy like that.
The summer she was thirteen she met Nate, a fourteen year old boy in town visiting family. She hadn't met many people from off the island before, and he was drawn by her sweet, feminine appearance. It was a summer of firsts. The two were infatuated with each other, and every moment they had free, they would spend together. Unfortunately, Nanami's mother, disillusioned by her mild-mannered daughter, never bothered to explain birth control to the girl, so when one thing led to the other and Nanami lost her virginity, it resulted in a pregnancy. However, by the time she discovered this, Nate had returned to the mainland. Her parents were shocked to find that their little girl was pregnant, and deeply humiliated. They had a reputation to maintain, of course. They urged their daughter to get rid of it, but by this point Nanami was hitting her rebellious streak, and she resisted. She acted out as long as she could, just to spite them. That was the last straw for her parents. They were too embarrassed to face their friends and coworkers, so they sold their business, gave Nanami the money, and left.
That spring, she gave birth to her daughter, Haruka. It was a rough few years as Nanami juggled school, working, and caring for a baby. She just barely graduated, and quickly fell into the workforce. She was determined to be independent by all means possible.
When she was twenty, her brother graduated from high school, and she went to visit him. It was during this trip to the States that she discovered tattooing. She fell in love with it immediately, and set about right away to get her license and to perfect her craft. When she returned, she rented out a friend's sun room and opened her own tattoo parlor. She had been practically adopted into this family as a teenager, and so when the family decided to move back to the mainland to be closer to family, they sold the house to Nanami at a much cheaper price. Her life fell together when she was twenty-five. She was a business owner, she owned her own home, and Haruka, at that point eleven years old, was healthy and happy.
Only once did she ever contact Nate. Once she felt mature and stable enough, she sent him a letter with a photo of Haruka. She got a reply, but she hasn't opened the letter yet. Although she prefers to downsize her past to nothing but a slight inconvenience, she's still afraid of repeating her parents' reaction, so she keeps the sealed envelope in her dresser drawer.
Yuuto Yuuto doesn't know who his birth parents are, as he was abandoned in front of a police station the night he was born. When he was just eleven years, however, his sister announced that she was pregnant and his happy, quiet, peaceful life came shattering down. Weeks of constant fighting persisted. He couldn't take it. He loved his sister, and he loved his parents, and he hated seeing them fight. Then, as if a switch had been flicked, he arrived home from school to find his parents packing up their things. When he was eleven years old, he moved away from his childhood home to the United States, leaving his beloved sister behind.
His parents continued to argue over the decision to move for a long time. Yuuto focused all his attention into his school work. Eventually a year passed, and the arguing stopped. He finished middle school, went on to high school, and graduated. His parents attended his high school graduation, and his sister helped him move into college. She refused to talk to them, and they did the same. When he was eighteen, he met his niece for the first time. She was seven. After that meeting, Nanami and Yuuto continued to keep in touch, and Yuuto acted as the only link between his parents and their granddaughter.
He went to college and studied the thing that he thought would help him the most after graduation. And, of course, when his graduation rolled around, he wasn't ready to enter the workforce, so he continued onto graduate school. He paid for this himself, because he felt guilty taking his parents' money. Even though he had his Master's degree, he struggled to find a job, thanks to a competitive workforce and a worldwide recession. That's when he decided to go to Nirvani for the first time in fifteen years. He got a job as a teacher, despite no real passion for teaching, and settled into a satisfactory life.
Haruka Haruka's world can be summed up into one word: Nanami. She claims to have no real memories earlier than age six, but if she had, it would surely be almost entirely about her mother. It was just the two of them for so long, she forgets that other people have fathers and grandparents and siblings and extended family. To her, Nanami filled all of these roles. Despite having a single, teenage mother for some of the most crucial years, Haruka had a happy and healthy childhood. She never went hungry, and every day was filled with art and laughter. Up until she was eleven or so, they ate mostly fast food and take-out. Haruka, growing increasingly aware of appearances and fashion, hated this and so she taught herself to cook. She ended up cooking all of the meals in the Koyama household. She had her first kiss when she was twelve, but thanks to her straightforward personality, her relationships never lasted long; just holding hands and a kiss here and there. When she was thirteen she decided to focus most of her energy into fashion. Even though she hasn't had a real friend in a long time, she's pretty much content, as long as her mother is there.
