Anyone else have the extreme goal of learning all of the major Romance Languages on their bucket list? I think that it would be so cool to be able to compare and contrast between them. I also think it would be pretty cool to get down some Latin too, for comparison's sake as well.
I've heard people say that once you get one of the languages, say Spanish down, that it takes half the time to learn French, and then half the time of THAT to learn Italian and so on...
Anyone anywhere near accomplishing this goal?

I think Romanian would be interesting, but I don't care much for the other romance languages. I'm learning French, though.

Yea, I've taken about 3 years of both spanish and french and I've had one course of latin (which I've all but forgotten). Its was funny because in school, my French teacher knew a little spanish and visa versa, so I would always mix up the languages, and, if I got the word right, they would still give me the point. xp

Part of me wishes I had taken Spanish. I shun it now due to its popularity and the fact that I have quite enough languages that I prefer, but it was technically required in my middle school, and I wonder what would have happened if I'd taken it(some people didn't have to due to schedule conflicts. They held the gifted and tutoring... thing programs at the same time.) I figure maybe I would have learned my love of language earlier and gotten an earlier start on the languages I really want to know. Then again, taking Spanish for a year in elementary school didn't do any of that.

Yes, I agree. I can finally consider myself fluent in Spanish, and I've just started an Italian class. So far, the Spanish has helped with the grammar at least, and some of the vocab is very similar. However, I'm not sure that I intend to actually become proficient in Italian, because I only need one course for my degree. It's more for comparison's sake than anything.
As to the other question, it has always been my goal to learn the other Romance languages (especially Romanian heart ), but French has never interested me. I'm not sure why...

Ehh, it used to be a goal of mine, but I've grown to love Scandinavian languages as well and have realized that not all Romance languages interest me xP. As of right now though (when it comes to Romance languages), I've been learning Italian via self-study for 4? 5? months, and due to my obsession with the language (and Italy... (: ) plus summer, I've actually attained fluency, or at least what I consider (lol I hate evaluating my own ability in a language) =O. And I'm currently taking AP Spanish/IB Spanish (3rd year of Spanish), although my Italian surpasses my Spanish ability (I can read Dante in Italian, yet we're reading kiddie books in Spanish class? xD). I've taken a semester of Latin, although frankly, I've probably forgotten most of what little we learned haha.
As of right now, I'm not learning any others, but I want to one day (probably not within the next two years lol) learn/I'm interested in any Italian 'dialect', French (although I prefer it spoken; imo written French looks way too artificial and 'regular' lol), Catalan, and kind-of Occitan. I'm not really/haven't really been interested in Romanian (except the day I listened to Dragostea din tei like a million times lol) and Portuguese.

Learning a few of them, maybe. Learning all of them is something else, though. When you consider how many romance languages there are beyond the few major ones - Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian and Romanian - it's a little daunting and somewhat less practical than other goals. You've got Catalan, Corsican, Gascon, Lombard, Sardinian, Sicilian, and many more (I'm too lazy to type them all out). Some of them are used only in a small area and by relatively few speakers. I'd rather learn languages that are more useful to me or that hold some unique appeal.

I missed the word Major when I read that the first time. Thanks for pointing that out.
That said, I still don't think I'd ever make a goal of learning all of them. Spanish and French are useful to me in an immediate sense. If any of the others become more useful, I'd consider learning them, but until then, there are other languages I'd rather spend my time on.

Ooo...I really wanna learn Romanian! I learned Spanish in high school....though I don't use spanish...as much XD I need to regain my skills again... I'm in another country (Philippines) for college... so I'm learning Tagalog.. more. I did study Italian before... it's beautiful... and so is French... Actually I want to learn the romance languages... But I'm dying to be fluent in Russian... >o< I really hope I can be fluent. I studied it way back.... And strange thing, Russian wasn't that difficult for me to learn...XD just the speaking part was a challenge...but other than that, it was good. But...*sigh* somehow I always end up taking a break cuz of school or whatever so then I forget what I learned in Russian...and have to start all over again. XDDDDD UGH. Mmm...
