Raeburn had discovered that he liked the park. More specifically - he liked the sandbox in the park. It was easy to keep sand from getting in his wings if he also kept the upper half of his body out of the sand, and he could make sand sculptures. He liked sand sculptures, even if they didn't have any nice colors in them. The sand felt smooth in his hands either way, and he liked that. He also liked how malleable the sand was, and what pretty shapes it would form if you just added a little water.

What he didn't like was that sometimes the sand did have colors in it - colors that would apparently form if enough ink dripped out of his wings. This messed up his entire plan - they weren't even the colors he wanted. Deep purple? He didn't know anything that was deep purple except flowers, and you couldn't make a sculpture of a flower out of sand - there was no way it'd balance on a sand stem.

He looked up at Sadie. She wouldn't help; she was still engrossed in sketching the people nearby. There was no one else in the sandbox, either - presumably seeing a tiny little kid with wings intensely concentrating on using all the sand in his own personal sand sculpture had scared everyone else into leaving him alone. Hmph.

What a dilemma.

Eventually, a female voice was heard near him. "What'cha making?" Alice asked, crouched by the sandbox in her baggy jeans and a formerly-white button up that looked like it'd been worn to a paintball tournament.

The girl looked a little old to be talking to toddlers, but not too old to be hanging around a playground. She was friendly and blonde haired, with bright eyes, bucky front teeth, and large purple and red wings with gold spindlys on them. Unlike most of the other kids at the park, she didn't seem at all scared off by Raeburn's concentrating so hard on his sculpture, in fact the opposite. Alice was quite interested in knowing what he was making and getting to see it up close.

Raeburn looked up. The girl was...okay, she was not typically pretty. Because first of all: buck teeth was not really pretty. Second, that shirt had been ruined by...something. But he did appreciate her interest in what was obviously fine art. And maybe the paint splatters meant she was a painter. Maybe. He hoped. Sadie liked bright, invasive colors too much to share his sense of aesthetics - and maybe this girl's clothing only meant she'd been working on a project and didn't want to ruin her actually attractive clothes. Her wings showed promise, although a small part of him whispered that you couldn't choose what your wings looked like.

"It was going to be the Parthenon in miniature," he informed her, although he knew he didn't quite have the talent to pull it off exactly. But that was why he'd picked a monument that had been ruined by time - that made it easier to recreate with sand than straight lines. Plus the Parthenon always looked pretty. "But I don't think the Parthenon's purple." He indicated the stained sand gravely. "I think my wings touched it or something."

Alice seemed completely unaware of the analysis she was being given under the other angel's eyes. He was, however, right on one point - she was much less well dressed than normal, having been doing a homework project for an art class she had at her boarding school. Though, if Raeburn saw her in her usual mix-and-match style, he might have objected just as much. However, if there was one thing Alice had when it came to her appearance, it was confidence. Other people could hate it all they wanted, but the Herald wasn't going to feel bad about it either way.

"Ooh, very nice." the girl said, starting to pick out the design, "We learned about that in school." It seemed a very grand endeavor to try and make an accurate model of a famous site in the sandbox, but hey, some people were just that gifted or creative! Plus, it was a cool place.

She laughed at his comment about the color, "Well no, but the Parthenon's also not in a sandbox or that small." it was a joking comment but meant sincere and lightheartedly, "Don't worry so much about the color - even if you don't like purple, it could look much worse."

"They teach the Parthenon in school?" Raeburn liked Alice much more now. Sadie never mentioned anything about her school - he'd found the Parthenon in a magazine that she was too lazy to unsubscribe to. It had been so pretty! Also he couldn't think of anything else to sculpt that was the color of sand - his skin, maybe. But a hand would be much harder than the Parthenon, by far.

So far it didn't really look like the Parthenon - there was a rectangular base and a row of cylindrical columns around the perimeter. They didn't have any lines etched onto them yet, save for one, which Raeburn had just been beginning when he'd noticed the purple, which was splattered onto three of the columns in the back in unequal amounts. It didn't look like Raeburn would be able to make the roof stand up, although he hadn't realized this yet. He also had no actual idea what the Parthenon was, other than a pretty piece of architecture.

"How big is it?" Raeburn wondered. Alice must be an expert, if she'd learned about it in school. Sadie could draw much better than he could, and she chalked it up to school and practice. He practiced all the time.

"Well, we were learning about Greece and it was brought up." Alice explained, taking a seat by the sandbox rather than just crouching. "It was a temple to the goddess Athena." She'd liked the stories about Athena - that was the wise goddess that knew about war and stuff, and came from her father's head! It'd been weird but what kids on Gaia didn't come from odd places?

The female herald, not being much of an expert on art, hadn't really been able to tell what it was initially but could see the vague details and resemblances now that she was aware of what it was. Alice was much better at things like color coordination and outfit arranging than, say, sculpture or building. Still, she could appreciate another's fine work!

Alice blinked, scratching her head a bit, "The Parthenon? Really big - it's huuuuuge. I think the man said it was 40 or 50 feet tall and like 100 feet long?" She was no expert by any means but her Social Studies teacher loooooved the history, geography and culture of Greece, so they were doing a whole unit on it. Alice remembered the packets on the subject.

"Was she a painter? Athena, I mean." Raeburn liked painters; they were talented. He didn't mind sculptors, either. Maybe she was a sculptor; it was her temple, after all. "Or a sculptor?" he added, almost as an afterthought.

The Herald cocked his head at his sand sculpture. It definitely wasn't that big, although it had a similar ratio of dimensions to the Parthenon - well, if the Parthenon had been missing the very top layer, anyway. "I can't imagine anything 100 feet long." It must've been really, really big. "You're really smart."

Maybe her cleverness could outshine her relative...well, ugliness. Well, if they formed a partnership, he certainly wouldn't mind giving her advice on the color portion. "I like how your hair is complementary to your wings," he said, because that was nice.

Alice blinked and thought, "No, I don't think she was. She was too busy being a goddess and helping people in wars." the girl commented, scratching her cheek a bit as she thought. "There might have been a God for art though. Or a muse. There were A LOT of people in Greece for different things."

Alice giggled a little at the compliment, "Well thanks. I like my classes so I pay attention is all. I want to go to Greece to see places like the Parthenon one day though. That'd be neat, huh?"

The girl blinked once more at the comment on her colors, "Huh? Oh, thank you." she said, glancing back at them, "My outfits are usually complimentary to them too, but I was doing lots of artwork for class today and I didn't want to get my good clothes grungy." Her comment was given with a distasteful glance at her shirt. Really, she'd actually had to steal the button up from Adele, not that he'd noticed, seeing as Alice had very few grungy 'do work' clothing, and wearing this at all felt so weird! Still, it was better than nothing, right?

"I want to do that when I grow up," said Raeburn, nodding. "Not the wars part," he clarified - he didn't want her getting the wrong idea, of course.

"Very neat!" Raeburn beamed up at Alice. Anyone who took an interest in architecture or, you know, the arts in general, was solid in his book. "I want to go to, um. Pairs." That was the right city, right? He nodded internally - it sounded right. Sadie hadn't really said the city name a lot, just the museum name, but she'd also said something about butchering an accent whenever she did. He didn't want to butcher anything. "Sadie says there's a huge museum there where there's a lot of paintings. I really like museums because everything there is pretty and pretty things are good."

He nodded at her tale about her class' art, tallying another mental point for Alice. Even Sadie just wore shirts with ducks and tuxedo prints all over them - they were, in Raeburn's opinion, ugly. And she was supposed to be taking art classes. "What art were you doing? Was it paint? Sadie won't let me do paint. Says it's messy."

"I'm Raeburn, by the way."
