So my daughter got a LeapFrog Leaptop and Violet puppy. They are both customizable and are a pain in the butt!

What do you think about these toys?

Are we teaching our kids that everything is technology based?

What about parents with their smartphones? My husband is always playing on his Droid... I feel this is a bad example for children.

It is annoying to see kids who could be outside playing, sitting inside with their noses stuck in video games, computers, or other electronic toy. Even more annoying is the adult who brings their toy to work and spends 12 hours surfing the web instead of doing their job.

There is nothing wrong with letting kids play with technological toys as long as the parents put limits on the play time.

Several months ago I was in hospital. I lost over 10% of my total bodyweight in one month, and did so very painfully might I add, and was eventually diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, which is incurable and can kill you if you aren't careful.
When I came back to school, much lighter in weight and skin pigment, leaning on the wall for support as I walked down the hall, All my friends welcomed me back and embraced me.......

...All except for one. Ever since he got that iPod Touch he has barely looked up from it for anything. He ignored my return to play PocketG-d. And we've known eachother since third grade.

If that doesn't sum up my stance on this for you, you weren't paying attention.

too much electronic media is unhealthy and unproductive. i have a huge problem with gen-x and it's convenience-over-efficiency ideals.

i remember Earth Day last year. that whole 1-day-without electricity pledge. disney channel ripped it off with a 1-hour version, which if you know your Geography and understand the concept of Time Zones you would know doesn't do anything. what's worse, is when i went to church a few days before to tell people about Earth Day, and talked about both of these versions of it, hardly anyone even knew about it. and when i explained it to them, none of them were interested. in fact, one boy did talk about it with me, sort of, but he was truely and honestly terrified by the idea of even going on a camping trip for one day without an electronic device, r even of going a single hour without his iphone. his eyes went wide and everything! gonk

it is sad. sad i realy hate to see people encouraging their children not to be practical and responcible hard workers. i have taken a liking to that show, World's Strictest Parents, even if i don't nessesarilly agree fundamentally with the rules of those households, only because i support the values that those households teach to otherwise spoiled teen brats. i am glad to know that Hot Topic is advertising it as well.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm not too sure what Ulcerative Colitis is, but my cousin has it and is randomly going to the hospital because of it.

I know I've said this, but my husband was constantly playing on his Droid when he got it so we got in to a few fights with that. We're just becomming such an antisocial society! I really don't want my family to be "torn" by technology.

I see your point, but then again, I don't. Technology isn't a bad thing. My daughter has several toys that are made by leapfrog. I don't see a problem with using those toys for children to help and aid in their learning. Should they replace the interaction and responsibility of the parent to teach the child the necessary things? No, but they really do help. I don't agree that parents use them as a sole device to teach their kids things, but there is nothing wrong with entertainment that encourages learning at the same time.

As for smart phones, they're no different than any other phone, at least that's how I see them. They just do more things. Personally I hate phones to begin with though, but they are kind of one of those necessary evils. If I had a choice I would throw mine out, but I have to have it for emergencies or the day to day use that phones are needed. For the most part though, my phone stays on the desk, by the computer, away from the family area. I hardly pay attention to it.

EDIT: I can see your point though about the society being so dependant on technology and antisocial because of technology. It's saddening and disheartening.

I remember, when i was four back in 2000 i would go outside and play with my sister on our 'bikes' [tricycles] and just run around and act like morons. But then we had to move when a man was killed rather grusomely i might add and that is why we had to move. After we moved we rarely went outside, and want to know why? Besides the new tech of 2004,we couldn't go outside because of the temp. It was 90*F almost all the time, and the hottest it got in Winter was 76*F,it was horrible. And we had nothing to do but play on the Xbox all day long and do homework.

Not only that, but as i grew up into my teenage years i saw that more and more kids were becoming addicted with those IPhones and PSPs and all this crap. And whats worst,no one ever goes outside anymore mainly because of the heat. I feel that kids these days have more free time then normal and have become more addicted to video games then ever before. There must be limits on the amount of tech being produced in the US!

i just think we need a better handle on our obsessive behaviors, and need to stop focusing on the "convenience before efficiency" bullshit. >.> hard work is valued where i'm from!

I agree with that. I just did a small essay on Academic Honesty and both of the sample papers I read say cheating and plagiarism are on the rise. It's really sad considering those people are our future!

But with the hot weather there isn't much you can do. It was hot here so we played inside a lot. But I would read books and color with my daughter. I would not let the TV be my babysitter. Even then I only turn on things like Dora or Backyardigans. Some of these new "kids" shows are slightly disturbing.

Most definitely. I was raised to value hard work and that if you want or need some thing, you need and have to work for it. There was no such thing as instant satisfaction when I was growing up and that is what I am teaching my kid as well.

when i was in ohio, i was actually ridiculed for favouring hand-washing dishes to using a dishwasher. >.> it was apparrently frowned upon there to do things "the hard way", when you can blow 1000 dollars on some mechanical piece of junk that doesn't even get the food off.

Ha! I had a silimar arguement with my husband! I was talking about wanting gloves to wash the dishes and he was looking at me all weird because I wash pots and pans by hand. Aparantly mommy {he's SUCH a momma's boy! I HATE it!} puts everything in the dishwasher. So we had a semi-arguement about how to properly wash dishes. By hand or in the washer... And aparantly you need a coffee pot to brew iced tea. My mom does in on the stove, therefore I do it on the stove. I don't need that clutter on my counter tops! Gr... Just gr.....

Haha! We're both from Maryland. We went to the same elementary, middle and high school XD And he lived like 5 miles from my house. I guess my family was a little more work oriented than his? I dunno. My family was always doing hard labor so washing dishes was nothing. But we were more... I hesitate to say hick, but we kind of are. I pronounce water, wuder and I say warsh, not wash. It pisses him off so I just say it more XD
