Just kidding, the title has nothing to do with my topic, it was just a lure! HAAHA rofl
After you all have finished throat-slapping me, lets get to the point.
I'll be deploying to Afghanistan sometime around Halloween, which means I'll be gone for a whole year. With that being said, i'm planning on saving my money BIG time. Im opting to buy a used car, but i want to know what options are out there for my suitability. I have makes and models on my mind but i need to narrow it down, and I KNOW there's always something out there that I may be missing.
Here's my standards: -I will have roughly $20,000 when i return from deployment. - I want to SPEND only half if I can help it. No more than $10k to ******** with. -I will spend no more than $15k tops -I preferably want a RWD or AWD whip -I tend to sway towards "old school" styles. Less electronics, happier day. - I'd like to get into weekend drifting, but it's not a MUST. Being in NY, it may be wiser to have a AWD if affordable. - I'm holding 4-seater into consideration, but I could care less how many doors it ******** trucks. -I'm sorry, it just ain't happenin'.
So Start listing off what cars are obtainable. Here's my take so far:
Any Year 240sx/180sx/S(13,14,15) preferably Sil-Eighty "Hachi-Roku" - the '86 'Rolla Mistubishi Galant VR4 (AWD) Mitsubishi Eclipse (the AWD one) Toyota MR2 Mazda Miata ('00-older, pref. '95)[rotary swap considered] RX-7 (both FC and FD in consideration) 80's or 90's BMW 90's Audi RS2 --------------------------------- At the moment, I cant think of any other damn RWD or AWD thats affordable. I'm also putting these on the backburner for thought: '76 Celica GT '97 VW Golf (also GTI) 90's Jetta '88 Sentra (planned for engine swap) '95 Sentra SE-R 80's or 90's Civic (EX or Sedan) 80's or 90's Teggy 80's or early 90's Prelude Del Sol sleeper '95 Protege
while i like them, most, if not all, are FF platforms.
My style is total sleeper (rims maybe), a daily, and hidden digi-s**t for when the night drops(ei: interior glow, bluetooth, head unit, subs, showcar engine bay. I would be expecting trips up and down the East coast.
Lets here any other ideas on cars that i might have missed

I say you should get a 5.0 Fox Body Mustang which would probably be the best bang for your buck.

Why not get two cars, if weekend drifting is one of your goals, yet you want the AWD stability for the snowy streets of NY? I'm thinking get a cheap banged up drift car for around $2k and spend the rest of your budget on an AWD Subie. It's highly do-able. The weekend drifter doesn't have to look pretty; as long as its mechanically strong with a good engine, good transmission, you're golden.

For one thing, Early 2000 STi's (Bugeyes) are well under the 10k mark. Another thing, Did I say get an STi? I said consider an AWD Subie. STi's aren't the only thing that Subaru makes. Expand your horizons.

Gomenasai for these next words: If I buy a ******** Subaru, it wont be anything less than an STi. I'd lesser settle for a half-assed Subaru, then put the extra money into making it what it shoulda been in the first place. It's like saying. "Oh, just buy the Lancer, than you can worry about buying the skirts, front and back bumpers, spoiler, turbo and pipes, rims, transmission and driveshaft, axles, and all that other goody-goody bullcrap just to make it "Evo-able", when i coulda bought the Evo itself. why get teased? Subaru's line of cars sets themselves apart from other manufacturers in that the enthusiast yearns for that sexy cherry-blossom red sticker. But, if you insist, where the hell can i find an ******** "Bugeye" Subie on the East coast?

Joey Crash Okay, first off, how may tours are you looking at here and how much time will you be spending on home soil? Long-term planning will help here, and it may also allow you to buy a better car. Not sure how many tours, but I'm also contemplating 300ZX and a 13b Rotary Miata. I'd like to do as FEW middle-eastern tours as my a** can take. I've also been salivating over some kind of F20C engine swap build.

It will be gone long before i get a chance to grasp it, as any butterfingered Subaru is. Down-side is even if i did get it, its not even an R/S. For the other Subarus, it seems theres one or two problems: A)They have no title or are "salvaged title" B) They've been marked for damaged or wrecked under carfax. It heartstabs me to see vehicles like these, but there's no future left for them, and i don't wish to risk the burden of such inevitable diseases like these lemon cars and if they are not ********, they cost over 10k, in which i'll be in a bidding war.

Craigslist it up. Honestly, local dealings is the way to go. If not local, then try the owner websites. I think Mysubie.com was/is a large Subaru owner's club website.
Chances are you're not going to find one that's completely stock. But, it'll be a much bigger market for you if you accept the ones that are well modified/ light modified. Chances are you'll be able to find one that's lightly modified (small bolt ons, maybe exhaust, etc) and decently cared for, as in not thrashed by ricers.
Imprezzas across the entire range (from basic to STi) are quite popular with the "Hellaflush" crowd, and although their taste might be questionable to some, it's no doubt that they take great care of their cars. I think you'll be able to find a decent bugeye if you don't just go for totally stock ones. However, if you insist that it must be totally untouched, that's too bad, we'll just have to think of something else.
