Vanyel looked down at her boots with a sigh that expressed a great deal of unhappiness in them. Their once-shiny white exterior had gotten scuffed and scratched and she was beginning to grow upset with everyone's insistence that they were actually go-go boots. Ana (the new "guardian") was exceptionally critical of the poor girl's tastes and had given her a wad of money with the promise that she would come back with something better than costume boots.

There wasn't anything wrong with her current boots though, besides the fact that they were indeed old and well worn. The girl simply wished to buy a new pair of the old style, but as soon as she walked into the shoe store she knew she'd gone to the wrong place. Filled to the brim with all sorts of styles, the orange-haired teen knew right away that she would not be finding any thigh-high white boots in stock any time soon.

A sigh escaped her as the will of Ana in the back of her mind pushed her forward into the store. Still she didn't like this new woman in her life, but Kitten had begged in her last letter to let Ana into her life, and Van was not about to go upsetting Kitten's final wish.

She wasn't the only one looking for boots this fine day. Someone else was out for a new pair, as someone had chewed upon his own, good pair. (He was betting on Rhiloss, little bugger had a vicious set of chompers when he felt like it.) The only pair that he currently felt comfortable wearing to work, as they boosted his height, made his legs look particularly delectable, and were comfortable for long periods of strenuous activity. All rather necessary in his current line of night work. Mostly his complaint was that the pairs sold didn't have anywhere near enough buckles to suit his personal sense of style. Currently he was still in his leather pants and a trenchcoat, though there was actually modest attire beneath its stylish confines instead of the usual bondage-gear that the clubgoers cooed over.

Arius pursed his lips in dissatisfaction with a pair of heeled boots that had little to no prospect of fitting him in any of the available sizes, he stuffed it back into the box with not a mite of irritation, brushing fingers back through his loose fall of hair. "Damn my sexy feet for being so appropriate to my height..." He muttered, picking up yet another faux leather specimen and eyeing it as though he'd just placed it under a microscope for scrutiny and evaluation. "Hell, damn me for being so bloody picky..."

A hefty sigh escaped the lithe teen, and he tossed the boot back with a clatter as it knocked over a few more of the display shoes. Ah eff. He supposed he'd better pick all of those back up, lest some hapless employee have to do their job.

To be truthful, Vanyel was a little oblivious to the semi-recognizable figure trying on tiny heeled boots. It could have been questionable about her recognizing him even if they had confronted each other directly instead of both being intent upon their shoe searches. And would she have recognized him for who he was, or mistaken him for the arrogant Orpheus, the two almost brothers with their dark looks and red accents. So intent was she in her mission to grab herself a pair of shoes and get back home that she literally walked past the boy and into the other aisle that was promptly obstructed with an overturned pile of display shoes.

How rude!

In fact, she was just turning to tell the man exactly how rude it was when she noticed the back of his head, already bending over to pick them up. Well...at least that was nice of him...but he shouldn't have knocked them down in the first place! "Be more careful next time," she sniffed, stepping over the pile and continuing on with her search, not to be blamed for not recognizing the back of his head.

Currently in the midst of bending down to pick up the fallen shoes and set them delicately back on their racks, trying to wring his brain for the appropriate order in which they'd been arranged, he was oblivious to all of the other passers-by, until one lass just happened to actually say something to him. "Well...I'm sorry, I wasn't..." Trailing off as he replaced a cute set of black and white loafers in their proper place, he turned, and was instantly jolted from his current, and rather employee-minded task. Now...that particularly exotic-hued fall of hair he'd recognize anywhere, not to mention those delectable hips. Ah hell he had to stop doing that! Childhood friend, dammit, childhood friend!

"Vanyel...?" Straightening, setting the last couple of toppled shoes back atop their thrones, he canted head to one side, arching a brow as he surveyed his childhood friend, a lass that looked good both coming and going, if memory served. And Arius never forgot a pretty lady, after all. A slow grin spread over his features, as he rather instantly detected her mistake, an easy one to make since the last time he'd seen her had been the Christmas get-together, a grand hullabaloo that had been full of greetings and 'haven't seen you in forever's and all of that other ridiculousness.

And heaven knew he'd changed since then. Better hair. Definitely better hair.

Surprisingly Vanyel had spotted a beautiful slouching-ankle boot that was a stunning white suede just as her name was called and she stiffened at the familiar voice, down a few octaves from that childish tone that she knew very, very well. How could she not remember it, when she used to fall asleep, head in her pillow, dreaming of the dark-haired boy and the way her name sounded on his tongue. And there it was again, tickling down her spine in just the same way. That definitely wasn't Orpheus, especially since Stork was all he'd ever called her anyway.

"A-Arius?" She stumbled over the name, almost unfamiliar in her mouth it had been so many months since she'd used it. "Oh my gosh, it's really you!" she gushed, stepping over closer to him but not exactly reaching out for a long-friend embrace. As he had done, she gave him the once over, good in the face but not at all to her taste in the liking of his clothing selection. Oh well, not many people were keen on her own strange wardrobe choices, who was she to complain about others?

"It's been a long time, where have you been?"

Arius, however, was no stranger to the invasion of personal space bubbles, and reached out for a hug, though not one of his crushing or touchy-feely ones, mind, this was simply one for a friend that he'd been missing for ages. Ack. Now this was really why Farlest should have nixed his curfew ages ago...oh, and stopped grounding him for being inexplicably missing in the middle of the night. The elf just didn't seem to understand that that was when all the good times were had. Then again, maybe he did... with how little soundproofing there was between the upstairs and the downstairs floor Ari was all too aware of what his parentals were up to in the wee hours of the morning.

"Yes, it's me...in th' flesh." He tossed her a lopsided grin, practically exuding pleasure at this lucky happenstance, wasn't every day he nearly tripped over old crushes. "And you look lovely as always, gods, it's been way too long! I've missed you!" The Mad Love scent was, after all, one to speak his mind (with some censorship, mind, very necessary censorship at that). His compliments, after all, were always of the most sincere nature, even as a child it had been thus, though now seemed ages away from the time when they'd both been rather adorable younglings.

Ah right, the where have you been, why the hell haven't you called...that line of inquiry. It was one that Arius was painfully familiar with, having gotten up close and personal with the brutal rage that was the spurned female. But with Vanyel, he rather felt ashamed that he hadn't hunted her down sooner. At the very least to wile that date out of her. Not that it would be like his dates with Anbu...no sir, as she liked to get a touch frisky, but the Orange scent, well...as he'd once heard aptly said, 'Now there was a lady!'. Flicking dark, crimson-encrusted locks from his features with an endearingly sheepish smile, he began his explanation. "Well, I got a job..." Definitely sticking with the waiter at the local cafe bit for this one, "and that keeps me pretty busy. My boss thinks I do rather fabulously and so I garner a lot of hours. That and Ka'hmesh and his kid-Scent Rhiloss moved in with Farlest and I, and Rhil can be a real handful at times. Haven't gotten to see a lot of my friends lately, which I find to be troublesome." Those he considered his real friends, anyway...he'd seen a lot of the floozies and acquaintances that just wanted a chance to get up close and personal with the insides of Ari's lusciously tight leather pants.

"So what've you been up to?" Damn, but he really had to spend more time with Vanyel. Meeting up like this called to mind just how much he'd liked her before.

Nimble fingers tapered from years of exercise at flipping page after page of new and exciting books reached up to push some hair back off her face, smiling with both her lips and her eyes as she listened to his explanation after dropping the hug. It had been more awkward than she felt like it would have been, but she pushed the thought of it out of her mind and focused entirely on the teen before her. "A job? That's lovely to hear Arius," Vanyel said approving a sweet, though she might have felt otherwise had she found out the reality of his working conditions.

Although she didn't know the names of the others he mentioned, the citrus teen nodded along and looked for all purposes to be absorbing his words with class. Van frowned at his mention of not being able to meet his friends anymore and she couldn't help but to worry about the possible combination of his new family set-up and newly acquired job that had been the cause. Friends were important after all!

"Oh, well, I didn't go looking for a job, but the couple that owns the bookstore near my new apartment say I'm there so much and so helpful to the people, they sort of gave me a job there. It's nice. And quiet." Vanyel was lit up from the inside as she talked about the job, thinking on the smell of the leather bound antiques, the fresh print on new pages, and the open minds of the people who came in. "It happened soon after Kitten died and Anastazia took me in, and it helped a lot to have somewhere to go when I needed an out."
