The puppies skittered from side to side across the glass in the growing dusk. How exhausting to simply try and attract attention day in and day out in hopes that someone would take you home and love you, where day in and day out you'd have to love them back or the whole deal would simply be broken. Orpheus hated the thought, and he sneered at the puppies as they yipped gleefully at him. Stupid things. Orpheus did not want a pet that was so very willing to wear its heart on its sleeve.

Pushing his way in through the door, he couldn't help but recoil at the stench that washed over his oh-so-sensitive nose. Truly a foul combination of fur and waste. Mentally he put good hygiene at the top of his requirements for a new pet.

"We're closing now," a disgruntled employee said over the counter, glaring at the teen as if asking what his death wish was.

Orpheus stared back at him for a moment before shrugging and continuing to look around. The older teen's visual threats didn't intimidate the vampire. A pet was what he wanted and a pet was what he was going to get.

Calanthe wasn't one to just wander away from Daphne while the woman was shopping, but yarn was so boring and Calanthe had been instantly drawn to the pet shop that was located in the strip mall just a few stores down. With a promise to her caretaker that she wouldn't be gone but a few minutes - please oh please oh PLEASE - Daphne had chuckled and given in to Calanthe's demands.

Brushing back a strand of long pale hair that was almost always in her face, Calanthe pushed open the door to the pet shop with a soft grunt. She averted her eyes from the puppies -those were just awful things- and instead moved towards the section of the store where they kept the kittens.

"Hey! We're closing now!" The employee was clearly not happy that Calanthe had entered the store at such a time, but Calanthe succinctly ignored the fellow and turned her rapt attention to the mountains of kittens that were kept in stacking cages near the corner. The shop door had been unlocked, after all, so why shouldn't she stay in here and ooh and ahh over the sweet little kittens?

Her attention was focused on a pretty little black kitten that brushed up against the door of the cage. Calanthe stuck her finger between the bars (blatantly ignoring the sign that warned against doing so) and brushed her fingertip against the soft fur of the kitten. Though Daphne had been talking about getting a cat from the pound they had been unable to make it there just yet. Callie would have to get her kitten fix from here, then.

The teen picked up his head at the sound of another person entering the store, smiling to himself as the irritation of the employee grew. Well, anyone who would act in such a matter similar to his own was worth checking out! And so Orpheus slipped silent as the shadows away from a creepy little iguana and to the edge of the -- oh god. NO! The vampire was not going to do his spying next to the overwhelming stench of the ferret hovels and with a little hiss to keep the breath out and not in he quickly re-aligned himself with the fish tanks. Fingers brushed against the cool glass, oblivious to the frantic darting of the panicked fish as the attempted to escape the invasion of his pale appendages.

Fish weren't even in the boy's mind for something worth buying. How dull! A pet that just swam circles in the same spot over and over and over and over again. It not only could not travel with Orpheus at his will, it had almost no companionable traits and was completely dependent upon its owner to clean and clean and clean the tanks. Even a stupid dog could learn to keeps it area clean. Fish were far lower on his list than even dogs were.

Finally his red gaze settled upon the girl as she tickled her fingers at the kitten, her soft scent reaching him moments later; a center of calm in an otherwise dirty storm of smells. She was obviously a scent child, for no perfume could have overpowered this lot! For a long moment he watched her play with the cat, considering the feline's strengths and weaknesses in terms of pet pros and cons. Besides the fact that a kitten was hardly magical, extraordinary, or even very interesting, there were a certain number of pros to having one as his companion. It was worth considering at least! Unlike a ferret or a fish...

"You can't buy it," he said from the fish tanks, voice carrying strong over the subdued sound of animals likely enjoying their evening meal or resting after a long day of trying to attract attention.

Calanthe enjoyed the rumbling purr of the feline that vibrated against her fingers. She was a tactile child and this governed over her other senses. Touch was so important -- the gritty feel of dirt against her fingers, the satin kiss of rose petals as she gardened, the warmth of the sun against her skin -- these all spoke to Calanthe in ways that smell and even sight could not. Even in regards to this kitten happily purring and butting against her fingers, just the touch of the feline could invoke a happiness that other senses couldn't.

Cats were fine animals. The best animals. They weren't noisy, they cleaned themselves... and they were independent, to a certain degree. Calanthe couldn't stand dogs, not with their incessant barking, scratching, whining, going on walks. No, Calanthe wanted a cat, one that would calmly sit outside with her while she rooted around in the dirt or snipped roses from their mother-plant. That would be the perfect pet.

When the voice called out, Calanthe had to assume he was speaking to her. After all, she hadn't seen anyone else except for the employee puttering around, and this voice was different. It was then that she also noticed a smell, a scent of dark flowers with a touch of something that Callie couldn't put her finger on. It made her somewhat uncomfortable, really, and hesitantly she called out, "Why?" She peered through the racks that the fish tanks sat on catching glimpses of ebon hair and pale, pale skin. Apprehensively she gnawed on her lower lip, wishing that he would move from behind the tanks.
