Hobbies: Learning the uses of herbs and plants: Whether it be for cooking or healing, or even just potpourri, this has always been something that has caught the interest of Sylvia. As a child, she used to wander out into the ravine so often just to look for nice smelling plants and flowers, or some common herbs that her mother often mentioned while cooking. But, after bringing back poison ivy by accident and getting handfuls of itchy blisters at the age of six; her mother had a tiny greenhouse built in the backyard so that Sylvia could get proper herbs. But after Sylvia turned ten there wasn’t any need for the greenhouse. She could identify herbs and plants like the back of her hand, though the greenhouse was kind of nice during the colder months. Her interest in herbs and plants is an independent interest, one she decides to keep a secret from most of her friends.
Cooking: This was once a necessity rather than a hobby. When Sylvia first stopped eating meat, her mother was absolutely horrified. Luckily her father was too drunk to care. Her mother would always cook with lots and lots of meat: whether it was minced meat over stir-fried vegetables, a large steak dinner, or foie gras on bread. Eating meat wasn’t avoidable with her mother cooking, so she decided to take it up herself. She would watch her mother as she poured a certain amount of oil on the pan before putting any vegetables, and how long to bake the yam before they could eat it. After a few burnt mushrooms and a cooking spoon charred beyond use, Sylvia was whipping up lots of different recipes.
Western Equestrian: Even though Sylvia was afraid of going to fast in a car, or even riding too fast on a bicycle, she loved to ride horses. In her mind, if anything goes wrong with a man-made machine, she was a goner, and left to her own devices. But a horse has some sort of life preservation. The horse could give 110% whist the man made forms of transportation would simply just fail. She enjoyed the feeling of exhilaration as she weaved through the barrels in barrel-racing, and the joy after she realizes that she did well in pole bending. It was something exciting in her life, a hobby that helped keep her in shape, like cooking and her interest in herbs.
Virtues: Because of this and this… This is what to do: Sylvia is very decisive. She can recall information very quickly and place two and two together. At a restaurant, she only has to take a quick scan of the menu to know what she’d like. At a bookstore it only takes her a few moments to get a pretty solid idea if she’d like a book series or not. In a tough situation she can do an evaluation of her morals and principals and make a decision that would reflect them, and would benefit the situation and hopefully everyone in it. In a theme park she already knows that she doesn’t want to go on the scary roller coaster and would much rather go on the merry-go-round… Things like that.
OH YEAH! You’re the girl I met that March weekend in grade four! : Sylvia has a terribly good memory. It’s probably because she spent her childhood memorizing herbs and recipes. Just as easily as she can place names to herbs and uses, she can places faces to events and reputations. This is also very useful on tests and exams. But more than not, she’ll remember someone and that someone won’t remember her. The first few times, she felt hurt, until she realized not everyone had her memory.
This goes first, this is the most important… Sylvia prioritizes very well. She knows what things in her life are important: Getting a good education, learn to cook like a professional, make her best of friends happy. And things that are not so important: Getting a designer lead rope for her horse, getting over her fear of roller-coasters, and her love-life. She thought it was absolutely ridiculous to sacrifice time that could be used for studying and learning to be used on romance.
I must add this specific oil, and exactly this much rosemary: Sylvia is very precise. One day her mother asked her to organize the kitchen cupboards. After she was finished, her mother found that the herbs were organized by certain taste, uses: meat, veggies, seafood, how often they were used, colors, and within that, alphabetical order. Sylvia also went ahead and organized the fridge. Whenever she’s cooking, you can try to find one carrot slice whose width is different from its neighbours and fail miserably. You can never fail if you’re her partner in chemistry class.
Flaws: I value you this much because… No… that’s not good. : Sylvia treats her friends nicely and seems to care greatly for them; she does. But she is guilty of not treating someone to ice-cream because she values them less. And she values people based on things they cannot control like how smart they are, how dedicated they are, and most importantly, how they can help her achieve their goals. When she first meets someone and can still get things like studying tips or horseback riding tactics out of them, she buys them hot chocolates during the winter or lemonade during the summer so they can talk. Once they stop being useful, she distances herself until they are mere acquaintances.
If I do this now, then what would happen later…? : Always calculating, Sylvia is always thinking about how subtle actions can get her to achieve her goals. Some goals are as easy as getting fit for the summer, or plant the vegetables earlier so they can get nice and big for Thanksgiving. But others almost make her seem malicious. Things like: She seems easily guilt-tripped. If I befriend her now, buy her a few things, she can help me with a few things later… Or things like: He’ll owe me if I save his cat. She rarely does things out of compassion; she is no time waster and will rarely do things that don’t benefit her in some way.
GO AWAY I’M BUSY: Sylvia can sometimes get a little over-obsessed. You’d better not bug her when she’s working on daily crossword when she’s on the last few words. You might as well stick your face in a tuba. As you can tell, she is very goal oriented, and when she’s so close to achieving it, she will concentrate on nothing else. During this time she sometimes shuns friends and family, acts like a total work zombie, and she regretfully realizes that she sometimes even shuns her other goals away for awhile. But if anything seems like a threat to her, and she can’t just distance the threat … That threat better sleep with one eye open.
OH… Just gimme that D< : Intolerant Sylvia, intolerant of braggers especially. She, herself, is very humble about her achievements, and has a sense of self-pride. If she sees you make a terrible mistake, or if you’re too slow at one thing or sloppy at another, she gets very annoyed and insists on doing it herself. Doesn’t matter if you just started to learn something, or it’s your first time ever organizing your locker, if you’re incompetent and she can do it better she can’t just let you try and fail, even if you REALLY want to finish the job yourself. And you may think, well she just means well… Wrong. You’re officially in her books as “incompetent child.”
Oh, WELL... hmph: Sylvia prides herself in being knowledgeable, organized, and prepared. So if you confront her with a question or a debate in which she isn't too knowledgeable in, she usually freezes up. She hates saying the words "I don't know". It makes her feel vulnerable. And losing that one debate, or saying, "I don't know" that one time will bug her until she redeems herself.
