Things had changed significantly, the house and town were now devoid of human life and for the most part, nothing had really changed for him. He peered over the edge of the roof to the ruckus below him, it was another squabble among the girls. Laurent or the other males really didn't do much to keep the peace recently and Vellir had just taken to hiding in one of the upstairs bedrooms.

He sighed and fluttered his wings before turning to preen them for a moment. He blinked rapidly and seemed rather surprised when he pulled out a flight feather. He sighed and dropped the feather to examine his wing. Well, it didn't hurt so he guessed it was about time to come out. He jumped slightly when he felt the roof rattle beneath him. Brendal and Tiergan must be at it again and it was just bordering on annoying now.

He flopped down at the edge and sighed, holding on to the flight feather to just fiddle with it. He was bored and kind of lonely, he didn't socialize very much, he wasn't as keen to socialize with the males and the females were only receptive to his company only occasionally. Uncle Barras was usually nice enough to be around, but Alaric hadn't seen hide nor hair of him today.

User ImageArethusa watched the dual ruckuses from the relative safety of the porch. Jennyl and Ayni were fighting over some inane thing, and the two males... She didn't know what they were fighting over, but the fact that they were knocking each other against the side of the house made her disinclined to find out.

She sighed, staring up towards the night sky. Her life hadn't changed all that much with the mass migration of the town's humans. She had come into this household when there were already dozens of Dustlings, to say nothing of the Serpents or Foxes, and while treated well, the two human women didn't give her much more attention than making sure she was fed and healthy. But she would admit, it had been much quieter when the pair resided there.

As the house rattled again, Arethusa let out an irate chirp. That had been far too close for her comfort, and she didn't want to become caught in the crossfire. She stood, stretching her legs before she went down the steps. She glanced towards the roof, thinking that, while not out of Tiergan's range, Brendal was ground-bound, so that was where their tussle would likely stay. She went around the side of the house towards the trellis meant for roses or plants to grow on, still sound enough to climb. It was easier to do that than fly, and, swift as can be, she worked her way up to the roof.

She blinked when she saw Alaric after she'd gotten up there, a little surprised. Then again, how many of the Dusts without wings go on the roof? And Alaric generally seemed to prefer a low profile. Deciding that, since she was already here, the least she could do was be polite and ask if she could join him. "Good evening, Alaric... I see I wasn't the only one to think of hiding here."

Alaric turned his gaze to Arethusa when she finally spoke and gave a greeting chirp. He had personally never spent much time with Arethusa but she seemed nice enough. "Evening Arethusa, it's not much of a hiding spot, being completely out in the open. The others don't come up here in the evening though." He glanced back down to see if Jennyl and Ayni had quited down, and thankfully they had. At least with those two, tiffs didn't last terribly long.

"Are you runnin' from the commotion?" Alaric smoothed out his loose feather and sighed a little bit. He figured she was, but he felt compelled to to start some kind of small talk. Maybe his evening would get a little better with some one to talk too. "I was too, I could tell Brendal was itchin' to start some one with Tiergan..." His point was emphasized by the next rattle of the window right under him. Vellir was probably having a fit herself right now at being disturbed by those two.

"Is it that obvious?" Arethusa said with a soft, tired chuckle, flinching a little at the rattling of someone being knocked into the wall again. She strides over towards the edge to peer down at them. "If Vellir has to come outside because of their stupidity, no one will be getting any rest tonight," she muttered, low enough so only Alaric could hear.

Shaking her head, she peers back at the brightly colored male. Her eyes slip to the stray feather he'd been fiddling with for a moment before she settles onto her hindquarters, her wings ruffling in mild agitation. "Is it a male dominance thing, or do they just enjoy trying to beat each other senseless?"

Alaric gave a soft laugh in return and smiled at Arethusa, "That only happened last week. Had Tiergan quaking in the corner from her wrath..." He seemed amused by that and then sighed, "I'd wish she'd stop holding out for grandfather... she'd be able to put things in order finally and mother would come home." There was no mistaking how much of a momma's boy he was. Aletta had all but disappeared leaving Alaric mostly depressed and despondent.

He seemed to kick himself out of the sense of loss that he was expressing to tilt his head, "I'm pretty sure Brendal just hates Tiergan on principle alone. The two of them can't be within a mile of each other without something jumping off, much less the same room..." He stopped talking, having kind of run out of something to speak about. He just let the silence hover in the air between them and then chirped up, "I don't see you around very often... what brings you around this evening?"

Arethusa couldn't help but agree with Alaric's statement, that Vellir should move on and take full reign of the clan rather than waste away, waiting for a Dustling who may never return. But she did have her sympathy for the clan matron, who felt so deeply for her first and only lover. She'd never felt that way for anyone.

She shakes her head at his words, sighing softly. "If they hate each other so much, I don't see why they remain within such close proximity. There are so many places they can go within the town alone, to say nothing of the mountains and the forest bordering us." The blue and silver femme can only shake her head, thinking that so many of the clan had become fools in the long time since its leader had abandoned them. At least the Serpents and the Foxes held together, united under Nyx and Naiya. It seemed so strange that that should happen, but the Dustlings clan had nearly collapsed to the infighting and petty differences.

She pulled herself from these dark thoughts, focusing on Alaric again. The male hardly had anyone for company these days. She felt sympathy for him too. These times brought a great deal of loneliness too. "I guess I just got tired of being alone with my thoughts," she answered honestly enough. "Brooding on things leads to nothing good."

"I can echo that sentiment... I can't particularly recall a time I've been happy recently." He couldn't answer Arethusa's question about the boys so he didn't speak about it. Honestly, he'd rather just change the subject. It wasn't long before the boys stopped their tussle in the house. Hopefully it was before Vellir started in on anyone in sight.

Alaric flicked his tail and wings and let out another sigh, "Perhaps you'd like to share your thoughts?" He found Aerthusa's company pleasant and her appearance even more so, but he had doubts she'd have any interest in him beyond conversation. Most of the girls around here wanted bigger, stronger males than him. He could always see his uncles and the other males around getting glances.

"Mmm... Just missing the quiet," Arethusa answered softly, glad that the house was no longer rattling. "Even if it wasn't always peaceful, it used to be so much more quiet."

She laughs a little, canting her head to the side. "I like some excitement, mind you... But everything is so frantic now, chaotic. At least when that leching freeloader Laurent isn't hitting on me or one of the other girls." She shudders softly. She didn't like Laurent. She didn't trust him - he was interested in his own satisfaction and nothing more, or at least that's how it seemed to her.

She sighs, shaking her head after a moment. "But that's not news, is it? We all know he's all looks and charm, nothing else. Slime." She shifts to lay down, resting her head upon her forepaws. "Hmm... What do you do to distract yourself from melancholy thoughts? They seem to be all I dwell on."

Alaric seemed to shy away from the mention of Laurent, mostly because he was getting the distinct impression that he should leave the area. His uncles were holding fast in keeping the family around, but with Aletta gone and Alaric barely present himself, he made it hard for his uncles to stand up for him.

Eager to change the subject, Alaric replied quickly to her question, "I usually just go flying... my favorite place is on the other side of the lake. There's usually no one there and it's almost always quiet. The flowers there are pretty..." He looked away from Arethusa in embarrassment, he was rather effeminate already, giving away his hiding place and his liking of flowers just seemed to make it more obvious. "It helps me think about other things."

Arethusa canted her head to the side, smiling softly. Somehow, it didn't surprise her that Alaric liked flowers, but she didn't think there was anything wrong with that. She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to picture the place he described, lovely and quiet and peaceful, but having difficulty. When she opens her eyes again, her sapphire gaze focuses upon him.

"Would you show me? Would you show me this place? I mean, if you aren't trying to keep it a secret," she questioned, pushing herself back to her paws. She took a few steps closer, until there was maybe two feet between them, possibly less. She was truly interested in seeing Alaric's retreat.

"Perhaps in the morning, it's nicer when the sun's out..." He grasped the feather in his paws and seemed to shy away from Arethusa."It's prettier when the sun's out..." He muttered that and ducked his head down to hide his face. He was embarrassing himself in front of a girl, a girl he was starting to like.

"Why are you interested in my place anyway, no other girl has..." His voice was muffled because his face was practically pressed into his chest.

Arethusa blinked at Alaric's behavior, backing up some as she thought she was violating his personal space. She tilts her head to the side, looking concerned at his sudden awkward shyness. Shifting anxiously on her own paws, she said, "Because it sounds nice... And lovely. I like flowers."

She sighs quietly, looking up towards the sky for a second time that night. "I don't know... It sounds peaceful, serene... We haven't really had that in some time."

Alaric would have blushed if it had been possible. The young male fidgeted as he lifted his head back up, "Oh... well... then I'll show you... but it's late and I'd like to turn in.." Alaric stood up and glanced around. Things were finally quiet, leaving only the buzz of the insects in the background. "Meet you back up here in the morning?"

He looked at Arethusa anxiously, wondering if she'd just suddenly turn around and laugh at him. His self esteem and confidence were fairly lacking so his expectations of Arethusa were honestly low. Hopefully she wouldn't stand him up if she didn't just walk away now.

Arethusa's expression was a mix of concern and confusion, not understanding why he was being so standoffish about her request. She'd noticed that he didn't spend much time around the females of the clan, and he was a little shy when he did. She guessed that was it, at least for the most part.

Not wanting to pry and make him even more uncomfortable, she offers a demure nod, wings ruffling as she rises back up. She strides towards the head of the house, planning to jump from here to the overhang over the porch, then to the ground before the went to her place in the barn. She glances back to him, excitement rising in her at the thought of seeing this place with flowers. "Have a pleasant night, Alaric... I'll see you in the morning."

[TIEM SKIP]

The next morning saw Alaric pacing nervously back and forth in front of the house. The edge of the sun had just peaked over the edge of the horizon, but most of the group in the area would still be asleep or not awake enough to disturb him. He silently cursed himself for not providing a definite time for Arethusa to meet him, hopefully she'd show up soon.

Anxiety and nervousness crept through him and he considered heavily leaving and abandoning this pursuit with Arethusa. He didn't want to be laughed at, Punk already did enough of that.... He let out a sigh and finally just sat down. She'd turn up soon enough.
