It has been brought to my attention that the public access TV station known as Akakū has been put on bid to "control the voices" of Maui County. Firstly I would like to ask if this is true. If so, why would you do such a thing? Is it the economy? The large corporations breathing down your neck? The pressure from commercial advertisers to shut down such independent, non-profit public access stations? Whatever the case, I do not believe it right to let the people of Maui County suffer for a few bucks. Even if our economy dips even lower than it currently is now, I strongly believe that Akakū is a vital source of our people and their identities. You see it is not money that our people need now, but hope; and Akakū gives that to people. It lets our local organizations and communities get out there and be noticed by the people of our district. It gives our people an outlet of expression that may allow us to change the area, perhaps even the world for the better. It lets our people know that even in these times of struggle with large corporations essentially monopolizing the market that our voices have not gone silent. It lets each one of them know deep in their heart that we still matter. It lets them know that despite our predicament, we can make a difference. And ultimately it lets them know that each one of them is alive. That we each have our own lives to live and that we would not be lost to the pages of history and forgotten. And you too have the ability to make that difference as does every single person in our community. After all we are only human and what decisions we make today will affect the lives of all to come. The decision will fall into your hands and your hands alone. It's entirely up to you as to whether we will be remembered as revolutionaries to a new era where free speech and freedom of expression reign supreme or just those crazy people who were dumb enough to stand against so many with so few.
