It occurs to me that practically every shonen anime is a derivative of Dragon ball Z, to elaborate take this comment from T.F.S abridged AWA special, "I liked bleach better when it was called yu yu hakusho, and i like yu yu hakusho better when it was called Dragonball Z". This is true in my opinion, it always seems to me that no matter how much you change the story and add new crap, it remains relatively the same throughout the separate series. the Bankai are what i call the "New Age Super Sayain Form", except almost anyone can use it as it seems. The super sayain form was actually much more meaningful, until it got replaced by super 2, 3 and 4, but hey still the same concept except with swords. only thing that hasn't remained consistent is the idea of magic balls that grant wishes. Now this is all based of of personal opinion, but it seems that way for the most part. I'm not saying this to insult the show, i like bleach, and until i missed afew episodes and got lost i thought it was great, and i still do, it's just the point of it all.

Tonight is the night we become great! The Stars will show us the way! You're looking too deeply into this. All shonen manga follows that same rules, and it's not like DBZ is the first one to pull it off either. If you just keep looking back, you'll find that a majority of shonen manga does this. I mean.... You could call Luffy's Gear Second and Gear Third as 'super saiyan' states in One Piece.
The reason the transformations are present is simply because the readers like it. People enjoy the ability to take it to the next level. You'll find this among western comics, as well. Tonight is the night we become Great! The Stars are what gave us away!

But what I'm trying to say is that the majority of shonen concepts were popularized and nearly re-invented by DBZ. Radical transformations, epic fight scenes (more epic than any recent anime because people ACTUALLY DIED!!!!!), and overly pumped up shonen heros.

Tonight is the night we become great! The Stars will show us the way! Now you're deviating. xD
Death Note was an interesting plot, which wasn't too graphic, which was one reason why it was published as a shonen manga, and not seinen. It was an interesting idea, as it explored one's psyche, and the opportunity to make the world ideal, and how this power, and the obtainment of even greater power may pervert those ideals.
No offense, but you seem like a mainstream shonen type of guy (Rave Master, Yuyu Hakusho, DBZ and whatnot). Death Note was not of their mainstream manga, and seemed more of a cult hit than anything. Tonight is the night we become Great! The Stars are what gave us away!

I'm not saying I don't like Death note, i'm open minded to many different types of manga/anime and will watch anything you suggest to me, cause i'm trusting like that. And maybe it's because i grew up with mainstream shonen (AKA good classic shonen), and really didn't get into more underground stuff until like 5 years ago. Secondly, any anime that's featured on adult swim, and what used to be toonami until it was shut down, is pretty much under the title of mainstream shonen....we didn't have the funimation channel or the anime network and other such channels so i had to do with manga i got from our library and what they had on channels that had anime on them.

Tonight is the night we become great! The Stars will show us the way! I can't really call Death Note mainstream. It may have been published by Jump, but it didn't really run in Shonen Jump (which features the epitome of mainstream manga).
Adult Swim does not utilize mainstream stuff all the time. Not by any means. xD
It's all a matter of what is popular, manga wise. Thus, transformations stay. They must think of new ways to twist this transformation so it isn't just the same thing though.
Like... Full Metal Alchemist. Wouldn't say that's main stream. It followed some of the rules for a mainstream shonen manga, but it lacked some of the more vital bits. Tonight is the night we become Great! The Stars are what gave us away!

If wal-mart and several other well-known retail stores carried their movies, t-shirts, or other merchandise, it's not the underground. I'm talking commercially underground, although i will give some leway and say that death note isn't really that mainstream, maybe cuz i love it so much and own all the movies and a good amount of death note theme merchandise smile .
i'm not gonna say much about the transformations or i can go on for hours.

I thought this was absolutely hilarious. And then I realized how much of a loser I have to be in order to understand it. And that just made it funnier.
I'd like to add to Mana's original point. Spiderman's a prime comic if you're looking for examples of transformations in western comics. And this is coming from some who has never felt any urge whatsoever to read "superhero" comics, much less to delve much further into the wonderful world of shonen than Bleach, DBZ, and Naruto.
Also, Wal-Mart and department stores in general are not, by any means, the last word on a series' popularity. Fruits Basket isn't an underground series and I haven't seen it's merchandise in Wal-Mart. Also, take Ranma 1 1/2 or Cowboy Bebop.

i don't get why you have to be loser to understand it. in any case i'll bite with fruits basket, but ranma ended in 1996 and no TV stations actually run it anymore, nowadays you gotta head to borders and Barnes and noble to get the manga, and the anime you's either have to download or watch online, or buy online, there's actually the entire series box set at my trade and play and i want it so bad smile . and although it's done in terms of episodes cowboy bebop, it's still airing on adult swim, the fact that it doesn't have any products being fresly produced now is because it lasted only one year, 1998-1999 so it's obvious why neither ranma or bebop would have products now, the series is done and it no longer worth making clothing/merchandise/etc. to them, now i believe that they still should but i guess i'm stupid XP, as for DVDs for both of them well you actually got me on that one, although i hear most wal-marts and such stores have a wider selection than the crappy one i have here idk it was just a general opinion, but even one must admit, dbz did alot for the world of anime.

Tonight is the night we become great! The Stars will show us the way! I wouldn't say it was DBZ. It was Toonami completely, Cem. It was the high point of my week when it ran only on Saturdays, and when it came to after school, oh man... Every day was just about getting to the end of school. DBZ was the longest running program on Toonami, which is why I imagine you always revolve back to DBZ. xD
Therefore, DBZ was more of a poster program for Toonami. Tonight is the night we become Great! The Stars are what gave us away!

yeah but even the manga and original anime/manga series Dragonball (1984-1995) which wasn't as popular, but still was pretty up there i'd say, were pretty awesome.

Tonight is the night we become great! The Stars will show us the way! If I've learned anything about manga from Bakuman, it's this: Dragonball Z was popular, or else it wouldn't have gotten as many volumes as it does. xD Tonight is the night we become Great! The Stars are what gave us away!

Nor would it have had a sucessful anime series, nor would it have spawned like 11-15 different movies.

I'm a loser because I understand all the connotations behind the insults while all my friends are thinking "what?" It's as simple as that really.
Anywho, yeah. DBZ=Big facking hit. (Proof: my neanderthal, soccer-loving cousins love it. And one of them is going to college and is the sort of kid who stays out til four AM.) Whoop-de-doo.
