A growl escaped the lioness throat as her blue eyes saw another swift kick just miss her cheek. This was not going anywhere as she expected as a sharp pain shot across her shoulder. She thought that taking down a small injured gazelle would be easy but after digging his horn into the pad of her foot and piercing it just made her have an even harder time finishing the task. She should have expected this though, fighting and or hunting was not her specialty usually eating scraps, fish, water, meeting another hunter and so forth was more of her particular interest of eating.

Faline gave a roar as the young male managed to kick her in the ribs, she couldn’t keep him pinned down long enough to give a killing blow but he was maimed enough that he wouldn’t able to get very far. A broken leg and heavy bleeding he wouldn’t last long at all but a concern came to mind when the scent of blood would drift into the noses of those who also seek food. One lioness against a pack of hyenas would prove rather threatening to her not to mention that they would get there before she could kill the young male at this rate.

The small creature wiggled again trying to get back onto to its feet, Faline swiped at him letting her claws only graze the surface of his hind leg. He squealed and Faline’s brows knotted as another foot came close to her head. Why was she so useless at this?

She still was a ways distant when she spotted a cloud of dust. Sunlight shone through the cloud, allowing her to see dimly the forms of two animals struggling. Her sense of adventure and her battle-readiness urged her into motion. She broke into a lope, covering the distance swiftly and quietly, despite her large paws. She slowed as she got nearer, catching a roar.

More cautious now, she approached low to the ground, ears sloped downwards to lower her profile further. Silently she crept nearer, raising herself just enough to peer at the situation. To her surprise, it was a lioness against a relatively small gazelle. Puzzled, she watched wordlessly as the hooved animal struggled, aiming a hind leg at the female's head. The look on the lioness' face registered as being at a complete loss. Another vailiant effort on the downed prey's part landed one hoof against the lioness' chest, and another against her foreleg.

She didn't need to hear any outcry to know how much that had to have hurt. She hurled herself from hiding, bounding in an arc to get herself behind he flailing beast. She darted a paw between the tossing horns and gave it a smart smack to the skull, stunning it. Quick as lightning, she leapt in, one paw pinning the horns to the ground, the other pinning down the ribcage of the small ruminate. She clamped her jaws around its windpipe before it could gasp another breath and bit down hard.

As small as the gazelle was, and as large as Awani's mouth was, she didn't just crush its windpipe. A satisfying crunching between her teeth beneath the short furred hide told her she'd snapped its neck. The fight was over now, already the body was going limp in her grasp. She moved both paws off it and gave it a sharp shake, just to be sure. Dropping it abruptly then, she panted with bloodlust ignited by the brief encounter. Tongue swiped blood from her fangs as she turned to the inept lioness, eyes gleaming brightly, whiskers spread aggressively.

"You really should be more careful," she said in a soft, husky voice. She licked her lips avidly, still panting heavily. Oh, how she loved the hunt, the kill!

Her struggle ended abruptly when an ebony leopardess descended upon the small gazelle severing an artery and crushing its spine in one swift fluid motion that made Faline blush with adoration and fear. In turn she only proved how pathetic her own lion instincts failed to obtain even a small meal of an injured creature compared to that of a smaller creature much like herself. Honestly the thought of how she had been able to live for so long considering nature's constant struggle of the fittest survival was not part of her forte seemed to boggle her.

Shaking her head and easing her body off the ground, leaving the leopardess with a half weak state of a smile before tending to her embarrassing wounds. She could feel the bruises starting to pool underneath her fur where the gazelle had kicked her, she gritted her teeth at the thought of how she would feel in the morning when the stiffness would start to set in. The pad on her foot was cut and there was small gash that stretched along her shoulder to the middle of her back where the hoof had managed to scrape across, argh at least this wasn't the worse she had seen. However, the sent of the blood of the creature started to fill her nostrils reminding her why she had bothered to attempt in the first place, the hunger had won over her own rationality however this was not her kill.

"I am a fool to believe I could kill anything," Faline replied half to herself half to her guest as she continued to watch the leopardess and making no more towards the kill. It had been a while since she had encountered a leopardess however they all bore the general body shape, smaller than a lion and a thicker tail. Her breath and movements showed her rather heighten thrill of the hunt, something Faline rarely felt, then again she rarely felt such excitement from anything. She seemed rather less interesting in arming herself against the lioness however Faline was obviously not a fighter after such display, and causing any sort of drama with the female would only leave her in even more danger than she was fighting the gazelle.

Giving a small nod and slouching her shoulders Faline replied, "thank you."

How it was that any feline, much less a lioness, could give up so easily on such a simple and natural thing as hunting, Awani could not understand. For the leopardess, it was as normal as walking, breathing, scenting the air. You didn't count it as a skill, but as a necessary means of survival. Her blood cooled, but she continued to ignore the carcass. She eyed the light colored lioness closer. "It shouldn't be so hard," she said quietly, eyes narrowed. "Go for the throat, stay away from the parts that will hurt you."

To her it was as simple as that. It was something she didn't even think about, merely did, and it was stretching her empathy to imagine not seeing it as something that easy. Had the lioness been younger, or smaller, perhaps it would have made more sense to her. But as it was, she was baffled. "Have you hunted before?" she inquired carefully, becoming aware of the way the inept huntress was hungrily looking at the kill. She shoved one paw against the small body, scooting it forcefully towards her. "Eat first. Then tell me how you came to be alone and unable to hunt." It was almost a command, though it wasn't given in harsh or scornful tones. No... rather, Awani wanted to know if this lioness needed help or teaching. It wasn't safe to be out in the roguelands without such vital abilities as hunting or fighting.

Faline let a frown form on her muzzle as she had thought about what the leopardess had said. It hadn't occurred to her, not that she wasn't intelligence in the sense she could understand the habits of other creatures and could tell you a bizarra arrangement of random facts that most didn't know. The idea of just aiming for its throat as quick as possible was not something she thought of or at least did not plan ahead of time to do. It did not help that her mind had gone completely blank as she had leapt towards the small gazelle it was as if all she had tried to do was survive and any other rational thought that should have remained fled in terror.

Looking at the leopardess again she shook her head slowly, "I have not really gone hunting before but I greatly thank you." Giving a small nod she looked at the kill and despite her want of being polite the growl that started to erupt from the origin of her stomach told her it was best to swallow her pride and eat. She ate quickly, or at least as quickly as she could without looking like a completely ravenous beast devouring without a single taste of her meal. The gazelle was rather delightful in taste compared to what she had been living on the last few days or weeks she wasn't sure when the last time she had a proper kill.

When she was done she cleaned what blood she could from her fur before giving her attention back to the leopardess.

"I am afraid I have never really hunted before, I mean small things like rodents yes but never anything this size or with this much fight. I never got a hang of it or at least never taught the proper way or at least I assume that cubs are taught the proper way? I've always lived alone for the most part... or maybe I am just stupid and I don't have the instinct?" Faline let a sigh escape, she had lived alone for almost as long as she could remember. Everyone she had known was as far as she assumed dead due to the fire that had consume their home, from there she just did what she could staying as far away as possible from others unless need be.

"Well, if you want to survive, that's got to change," Awani said matter-of-factly. "Rodents won't keep a full grown lioness strong and capable." She examined the lioness critically. She could use some extra pounds, to be sure, but she wasn't so skinny to merit alarm. That was good, because if she was going to be taught how to hunt, she needed the strength to do so first. "I see no physical reason that you can't learn how to hunt properly," she stated with a satisfied nod.

"I am willing to teach you how to hunt the different prey that make for good meals." Her voice was soft, but prim and to the point. Hunting was serious business! "In addition, I suspect you have no idea how to defend yourself from unfriendly individuals, and this too is necessary to know in order to survive." She eyed the lioness speculatively. "What would you have done if I had attacked you instead of the gazelle?"
