It was a much subdued Elke Arma who stood in the lobby of Crystal Academy. Her shoulders slumped forward, her head was bowed. Without blue or red hair, both being common colors before, she hardly looked like herself; the blond locks were plastered to her head, because the wind outside whipped rain right under her hood.
"Yes, that's right," Aysel Arma was saying to the secretary. "I need her school records, there's a dear." She leaned forward onto the edge of the counter, chin rested in one palm. Her manicured nails tattooed a sharp beat on the marble.
For her part, Elke looked very tiny, and very miserable. The floor around her was a puddle, and her jeans were soaked through.
A pathetic picture? Maybe, but not if you had thought she was dead...

It hadn't been a very good day, or worse still, good life for Serenade. Aries had died, Kunzite had died, leaving their room empty and she had watched, subdued with a flurry of tissues clutched in her hand as the room was cleared out. The room which she had often gone to and asked Hero to help her, where Miriam pledged her alliance to her.
Nehelenia too, was dead, with Alexandros and a few other parallel soldiers as well. It felt strange now, to be the only Princess, when Nehelenia had been the more commanding one. In fact, all those who had died were the strong impassive leaders, and Serenade didn't find it fair. Why was she left, when she still didn't have her crystal?
She felt terribly empty inside, and it showed. It was clear even to her, that there was no heart in her music even as she hit all the right notes and proceeded to do exactly as the score told her to.
She walked the halls, back to her room, her lonely lonely room with only Elke the Bear to keep her company when something pinged in her head. Something that was oddly enough, not right.
Ever since one Zodiac died after the other, Serenade had used all her strength to repress herself, to stop herself from trying desperately to locate them in her mind. She had done it once before and felt the grief, and told herself never to use it again, but she was so lifeless and devoid of strength that her barrier had came down. But it wasn't right. It couldn't be.
She had heard the news. Seen the truth, however painful it was. Serenade did not believe the voice in her head that told her that the girl around the corner was... Virgo.
Elke.
Clutching on to her books and trembling, the girl took one step forward and turned, and watched mutedly as Elke's mother came into view, and... and...
Serenade abruptly shut her eyes and pinched herself. Hard. "This is a dream." She told herself. "This is a dream, a dream, a dream. I'm dreaming. Ignore what your mind is saying. You're playing tricks on yourself." The dead can't come back. But they have, before. A small voice echoed in the back of her mind. "A dream." She repeated, walking forward, eyelids still firmly closed. When I open my eyes, she won't be there. It will be someone else. I'm hallucinating.

If Elke had known of the Captain's death, of the roommate's death, of Nehelenia's death, she might have been even more subdued. She only glanced at the shoes of the person coming her way, thinking of the things her father had shipped to her with a letter and a check. It might have ended there. Elke might have just bypassed the Princess, never the wiser, able to completely ignore that part of her life like she wanted to. But she heard the voice, the familiar voice, felt the tug in the center of her chest, and she turned on her heel, some kind of terror and despair in her eyes.
She hadn't seen Serenade, not since Grayson's death, and the pressure of a mourning keen was bubbling in the back of her throat as she stood there in her dripping blue raincoat, her mouth open, and all that came out was a little strangled cry.
"Ma petit?" Aysel's questioning look was ignored, because Elke threw herself after the other girl, wrapped her soaked arms around the green-haired girl's shoulders. She clutched at Serenade's shoulders, held her there, crying. "Princess," she whispered, taking a deep breath. "Princess, it's me. ... Serenade..."

A dream is a dream is a dream. She repeated, slowly and methodically in her mind even though the voice that belonged Princess Chronos was screaming at her, telling her that she wouldn't be wrong. Virgo, it insisted. That is Virgo and this is not a dream. Not a mirage. It's real, this is reality, snap out of it for the love of Serenity, Serenade...
The next thing she knew, wet arms were thrown around her and her eyes snapped open, dazed cerise orbs first alighting upon Mrs Arma and then wandered to the figure that was hugging her. Saying her name. Calling her Princess. The hair was blonde, she reflected, still frozen into place. Not the usual color Virgo/Elke's hair was, but that was dyed, Chronos' voice pressed forward insistently in her mind. Serenade, trust yourself. Trust your instincts. And then the voice winced. Just don't trust the instincts that tell you this is a dream.
"B-but..." She babbled out loud, tears starting to sting her eyes, "she was dead. Everyone said so. Her side of the room is empty, so empty that I look at it and am reminded all over again that she won't be there any longer..." And then she broke, the stress of the previous days which she had been holding in had broke and splashed all over her and she clung to the figure that was Elke. "What took you so long? I thought you were gone. I thought you wouldn't... ever..."

Bruising your princess had to be against some kind of rule. She was kind of like a precious fruit in a way, because you couldn't really handle her roughly, you were supposed to wrap her in those weird little foam jelly things. And maybe pack her in with some pillows, but the point was, Elke was clinging hard enough to bruise, her short blond hair was dripping on Serenade's jacket. "I never wanted to leave you," she choked out through her teeth, "Princess."
Her grip slackened a little, and she made a feeble attempt to fix Serenade's clothes, and then circumnavigated to stand in front of the Princess. "It's okay, I came back," as she straightened her friend's green hair. "They... it was another mistake." A smile, inviting the Princess to play along. A mistake! Right! Just like bacterial meningitis, just like the year they'd spent dead, just like Barren Pines. An organ ring, a mistake, what was the difference? "They thought I was Elanor Ansel," she explained, her hands still on Serenade's shoulders. "She is a sixteen-year-old Meadowview student. She had a scar like this," pointing to the smooth line on one side of her face. Barely noticeable. "Or she would've, except she died."
And then, quietly, "It was just a coma, Serenade."
Mature. Calm. But anyone, looking at Elke's eyes, could tell she wasn't saying something.
"Let's go up to our old room," she said.

Serenade didn't really care if her delicate skin was going to bruise, she was clinging back on Elke, two girls clinging onto one another, tears still streaming down her cheeks as the familiar voice of Elke assured her. She was back, and the voice in her head breathed a sigh of relief and contentment. It all made sense, and yet at the very same time, it didn't. She was confused, but she didn't care.
At least she was here. She was real.
Serenade had never seen the dead body. She wouldn't have wanted to if they had asked her to identify it anyway. It was reassuring to know that it was someone else, but then again, Serenade felt sorry for the girl who was Elanor Ansel and her family. She felt sorry for being happy that it was Elanor who was dead, and not Elke. Still, she wiped away her tears and managed a smile for Elke, who was alive and well and here with her.
"Alright." She said mutedly, although another thought had just occurred to her. Had they told her what happened when they had cleaned out Elke's side of the room? How she had practically went berserk? It was embarrassing to think of, really, and Serenade wished now, that she would have handled it more maturely.

"I'm going to my old room," she said to Aysel, back straight, shoulders stiff. When she had permission, she took Serenade's hands again, brought her up the stairs and to their room. The Princess had to unlock the door, because Elke didn't have her keys; she had her old possessions, sure, but the key had been surrendered when they'd filed her death certificate with the school. They sat in the old room, both on Serenade's bed (Elke had abandoned her dripping raincoat just inside the door like always).
Her old room, she kept saying. Aysel had wanted school records. Grades. You didn't ask for those things if you were staying in a school. That could really only mean one thing.
She was cradling Serenade's hand to her cheek, eyes half-closed as she looked around the room like she was trying to memorize it. The entire meeting was being soured by the specter of something she wasn't saying... She let go of her Princess's hand, set her own hands on her knees. "I'll still be here," she said out of nowhere. "I mean, I can come around as often as I want, long as I sign in. I don't even know if they'll let me. And..."
After a moment, she held up an arm; an invitation for Serenade to slide under it. She was wearing one of Grayson's old button-downs, black and gray checkered fabric. "I am so tired," she said, smiling a little. "So very, very tired."

It was strange to be back in her dorm room with Elke, strange to open the door and still see that empty, non-Elke-ish side of the room, to remember, with a start, that all her belongings had been stripped bare from the room save for that one teddy bear on Elke's old bed.
There were complications of course, she realized. Crystal wasn't going to let Elke back in so easily, and that was kind of stupid, but Crystal liked being tight on security. Letting someone once thought dead back onto campus... but they had done that with the Barren Pines kids, didn't they? Or was it Elke's family? But at least Elke was back. She reassured herself softly. "I'll come and see you too." It was so strange to say that, when they usually saw each other every day when they woke up to get ready for school.
She rested her head on Elke's shoulder gingerly, not putting her full weight on her. Perhaps she was still scared, scared that it would crumble away before her and she would wake up, panting from the fright. "It's been tiring." Serenade agreed softly. "Sometimes I wish it wasn't." I wish I was more ignorant.

She had composed the entire speech in her mind. How much had she given up for the Zodiac? And what she wanted wasn't such a big deal. It was just one thing, one little thing. She wanted to be able to go to her brother's school. She wanted to attend Meadowview. Was that so bad? To want to live with her family?...
But the Princess looked so sad. So she just snuggled up, and said, "We'll see what happens, okay, Princess?" Their fingers were laced together between them, the scars around their ring fingers next to each other. Elke's eyes were closed. "It'll get better, I promise." The words were leaden, empty, said because the old Elke, the one Serenade knew, would have said it.
If a few more tears leaked out from Elke's eyes, no one said anything.

"We'll see." She echoed, as something strange stirred within her even with Elke's warmth so close. She wondered if Elke knew, knew about Hero and Miriam, but remained subdued, quiet, cherishing this moment for now.
Better? Maybe, just maybe. She had lost so many and yet Elke was alright, and it injected just a teeny bit of hope in her, which Serenade had so desperately needed. Hope was a bare semblance of what she used to be that she wanted to regain, so that at least, she would have the strength to fight on.
The both of them just stayed there, next to each other, quiet and basking in the memories of when they were still roommates.
