It was a warm summer evening. The beach was still pretty well packed in most places with sun bathers and beach goers but at least a good few of them were starting to head home as the evening war on. It was the better time to show up. With so many leaving it was easier to find a parking spot and there was less of a chance that Keal would loose sight of Boian.

The two made their way along the beach until they found a nice slightly shaded spot to lay down their towels and a small picnic basket. As soon as the base camp was set up Boian slipped off his cape and smiling grabbed a bucket and shovel and made his way down the sand towards the water. He had never been to the ocean but he did not feel any fear of it just yet. And before he planned on getting in he wanted to try and build a sand castle.

Keal took off his shirt and pants to lay in the sun in his swimming trunks and watch his spawn heading towards the water. He had made sure that their base camp was close enough that he could get up if there was a problem but not close enough to get wet if and when the tide came in.

Boian found a part of wet sand and flopped down on it to start digging a hole with the shovel. His tail waged in the sand dusting a trail across the wet compacted sand. He grinned as he looked over at the waves that crashed and faded about a foot from him. "I am going to make castle you can't wash down." He said with a smile and returned to digging a hole.

Damien had discovered that he quite enjoyed the beach in the evening. Ever since he had wandered here in the heat of the afternoon to try and cool off, he'd been consistently amazed by the number of things he could find. After only a couple hours of searching, he had a stolen grocery bag full of small, lost trinkets. Sure, a majority of them were seashells, but there were also interesting food wrappers, a few discarded plastic shovels, some very odd pieces of driftwood and seaweed, and even the washed-up shell of a sea urchin. The boy didn't have any idea what use he had for his collection just yet, but something would surely come. Besides, at the very least they would make pretty decorations for his room, and maybe even Gabriel would like some of the more flashy shells.

Given that he'd been watching people leave (and pillaging the things they left behind) for the better part of an hour, Damien was slightly surprised when he glanced up and saw a pair just arriving at the beach. He wrinkled his nose slightly, worrying for just a moment about nighttime swimming and the lack of common sense in children, but the irritation passed. He continued walking along the water's edge and examining his shells, only stopping when he saw an odd, silvery child digging a hole near the waves. His eyebrows furrowed gently as he surveyed the scene, and after checking the time, he walked over and squatted down near the toddler.

"If you build a castle here, it's going to be washed away, you know," he said in a low voice, not even bothering with an introduction. "The tide'll be coming in in a bit. If you want your castle to work, you should move." He tried to convey this info in as non-authoritative of a tone as he could. If this kid wanted to let his castle be destroyed, it wasn't his place to interfere.

Boian turned and looked up as he heard a voice. His indigo eyes smiling brightly but looking a bit worried noted more by the lowering of his softly furred ears. "I don't want it washed 'way! But the sand up there is not wet enough for a good castle." He pointed his shovel at the dry sand. "Can you make one that won't get washed 'way?" He shifted to stand picking up his bucket. "You know sand castles right? Help me build one?" He asked with dark eyes looking hopeful.

Maybe with someone else to help he could build a really big one! He then looked at the bag in the other boy's hand, "What's dat?"

Damien blinked in surprise when his help was requested. That certainly hadn't been his plan when he had spoken to the small child. He had never really built a sand castle, and even though the concept was basic enough and he had a natural talent for building, the idea of working with such a sloppy material was a little daunting. Still, the child looked at him with such blind hope that he couldn't find it in his heart to refuse. He sighed a little irritably, looking around the beach and then gesturing to a place a few feet away. "Fine. C'mon, let's try over here. If I'm right, the water should rise enough to make the sand wet." He stood up and walked over, trusting the child to follow him.

At his other question, Damien glanced into his bag, and struggled to find a word to describe all of his found objects concisely. He quickly gave up, and held down the bag so the shorter child could see. "A lotta stuff. Shells. Wrappers, a couple rocks. Nothing really special." He shrugged one shoulder apathetically; he knew that he collected things that most people didn't give a flying freak about. Another thing to add to his general freakiness.

When they reached the spot they'd decided upon, Damien knelt back down in the sand, glancing questioningly up at the toddler. "So, you're the boss of this project. How do you want to start?"

Boian dumped out his bucket and picked up his shovel. This was going to be the best sand castle ever. He had help and they were going to put it in a place the water would not be able to break it down and wash it away. He smiled and followed after the older spawn.

When the bag was lowered Boian looked in. "Wow that is a lot of stuff. What do you do with it all?" The wrappers and rocks gave him an idea. Their castle would need a flag and a path leading up to it. He would wait until the castle was a bit more built before he voiced his great idea.

Boian's ears lowered as he thought a moment then he nods. "Well first we need a hole with water." he held out his shovel to Damien, "You dig a hole I will get water." he smiled and padded down the shore with his buck.

Damien shrugged once again when the toddler asked him about his collected things. "Mostly just try and add them to things. I could use the wrappers for decorations or wrappings, the shells for handles or, again, decorations... yeah," he ended a little lamely, stowing the bag behind him. When he said it out loud, it sounded so lame. His tail curled and uncurled; why did he have to stop and give this kid advice...?

He was drawn out of his momentary misery by the sudden appearance of a shovel in his face. Damien nodded solemnly at the boy's instructions. "Okay. Try not to get swept away, if you can." Out of some random protectiveness, Damien kept one hetero-chromatic eye on the smaller spawn. He didn't need to have to explain to a furious and grieving parent that their boy was somewhere in the currents of the ocean.

Boian thought that it was really cool that someone could be so creative with things they found in the beach. He would have to ask about it when he got back. He gave a nod as he made his way down the sand. "I will!" He smiled turned only to trip over some other child's previously dug hole and fell flat on the ground.

He was a bit stunned for a moment as he pushed himself up and dusted himself off. He thought for a moment about crying but that never helped. And what woman would want to see their prince cry. Instead he force himself to giggle as he started back off towards the water. "I am okay." he said a little more shaky than he had meant to sound.

He filled up his bucket. At least the sad was fairly soft to land on. Once his bucket was full he made his way back up towards the waiting spawn. The squish sand made it a bit hard for the toddler to keep all the water in the bucket but he made it up with it mostly still full. "So you make things with stuff...that is really cool. You must be great a sand castles and things!" What a great guy to find at the beach.

Damien winced inwardly when he saw the child trip, digging a little fiercer in unconscious irritation. His headwings folded down tight, preparing to tolerate some variation of high-pitched crying. Why couldn't kids watch where they were going? He didn't want to have to deal with a sobbing child and an irate parent. His tail flicked violently behind him; he should have just gone home...

But the cries never came. Damien blinked in mild surprise and glanced over his shoulder towards the sea, where the caped spawn was toddling back to him with a bucket full of water and an eager smile. Huh. The child shook his head, marveling at the error of his assumption. Almost subconsciously, a claw went to a place high on Damien's arm and stabbed into the flesh. That's what he deserved for thinking wrongly of people based on one characteristic.

An awkward half-grin spread across the striped face when the other spawn complimented him. Him being good at things; what an amusing notion. He shook his head firmly as he dug deeper, focusing his Wrathful energy on the work. "N-Not really, probably. Never built one before. I know how in theory, but..." He shrugged again, then looked up at the boy. "Okay, hole dug. What now?"

Boian tilted his head slightly to the side when he reached the older spawn. Suddenly Damien looked more nervous and withdrawal. He was confused at what had upset the other but he smiled brighty. "Well I will help you with your first time." he giggled and his tail swayed in the sand. "What does in theory mean."

Damien seemed really tense but they had a castle to build. And if he did not seem to want to front the information then Boian would not press him. "Okay well we pour it in the hole for the moat then we build the walls and towers. Which do you want to do?"

Damien didn't outwardly respond when the other spawn said that he would help him; the intelligent child had assumed that it was implied. At his question, he mentally winced for speaking so complexly and spoke his answer to the hole, not meeting the toddler's eyes. "'In theory' means that I know what I'm supposed to do, but I've never actually done it. So there's still a reasonable possibility for failure," he concluded in a quiet tone. Hopefully that conveyed the concept to the small child; he didn't think that he could put it any more simply.

When the child relayed the instructions, Damien shrugged when he was asked his preference. "Don't care. Whatever you don't want to do is fine." In truth, Damien would have much greatly preferred to build the walls and towers, ever the little tinkerer. But he didn't want to impose himself upon this child's project. If he built the structure, he would most likely build it all wrong and anger his little companion. Better stick to the simple stuff.

Boian gave a nod his pointed ears bouncing with the movement. "Oh I see now. Well that is why sand is so good. We mess up and can redo it. See." he made a quick little tower with his bucket and watched a corner of it fall down. He then giggled and scooped the sand back into the bucket before trying again.

He then smiled at Damien, "Well seeing how I have the bucket....I guess I will make the towers. Do you think three or four would be better?" He asked as he packed the sand firmly into the bucket. He did not know the small war inside his companion's mind. If he had he might have been just as worried or in a desperate need to help him feel more confident. But a last he knew could tell that Damien was a bit withdrawn and did not seem to really be into wanting to build the castle. "Maybe after we make a castle I can help you find more things for your bag?"

Although he didn't smile, Damien made a quiet amused noise when the child demonstrated the benefits of sand as a construction material. "That is certainly true," he said softly, picking up a handful of sand and letting it slip through his fingers. Still, the mere idea of making a mistake was unpleasant in his mind, and he still bore a great worry. Once again, what if he didn't use it properly? He would ruin this kid's castle, or at least probably would. Then again, the other spawn didn't seem that concerned about things like that, so maybe Damien should just shut up and do what he was told. Yes, he decided with a nod, that was proper.

He nodded once again at the child's decision and, after touching his chin in honest thought, made a circular gesture as he spoke. "Four, I think. That way the structure's more stable, and it will be easier to make the walls." A small blush grew on Damien's face as he gave his opinion as well as expressed his intelligence, and to distract the child from both of these things, he quickly picked up a shovel. "I will dig the moat, then," he said awkwardly as he drew a line around where the boy was building the towers, marking his path. He pushed the shovel into the slippery sand without preamble, making sure to deposit the sand a good distance away from the construction site.

When the boy offered to help him, Damien looked up in mild surprise, having not expected it. He silently stammered for a moment as he thought the offer over before shrugging a shoulder once again and turning back to his work. "If you want to, kid, that's fine. Oh, and I'm Damien, by the way. What is your name?" He asked this more out of courtesy than any kind of genuine interest; it wouldn't be right to call the boy 'kid' all night.

Boian listened intently at the idea of the four tours and the wall and his little face lit up. "Oh oh! We could put a towner at each corner of the walls and then make like a pyramid thingy in the middle for the castle! Great idea!" He giggled and as the older spawn was making the path for the moat he filled the buckets and pushed it down in the sand to try and make a good tower.

When he was called 'kid' he looked up and was about to correct the older spawn Damiend finished off the sentence with asking his name. He smiled and put a furred hand to his chest, "My name is Boian. Damein is a very interesting name. And yes I would like to help you. After all your helping me with my castle..pyramid thingy." He turned his attention back to the bucket and took a breath. "Alright...here we go...I hope it works this time." he tapped the bottom of the bucket lightly and then started to try and pull it up straight. As the bucket was off it was almost a prefect likeness though as he pulled the bucket away it nicked the side of the tower and caused some of it to fall down. "Aww...so close!" he tilted his head as he looked it over. "Should I redo it? Or maybe it can pass as an old old castle?"

Oh thing that toddlers had was the ability to change the worse things into possible good things with very little effort. For the most part they were happy with the simplest of things. Boian was no exception to this toddler trait. He might be a spawn but he was still just a 'baby'.

Damien grumbled under his breath as his idea was praised and stabbed the sand a little harder than necessary. It was just fu- freaking common sense, nothing to get so excited about. Then again, the boy was still young, and perhaps he was so young as to be in that stage where even common sense is extraordinary. So he kept his protests to himself as he worked on the moat and the boy worked on the towers, the atmosphere made peaceful by the setting sun and the constant crash of wave upon sandbank.

"Boy-an, huh?" Damien replied, testing the strange-sounded name out carefully. He had never heard of anything similar to that name; maybe it came from a different country? He scoffed and rolled his eyes when he was told his name was interesting, and this time couldn't help but correct the toddler, Boian. "Not really. Definitely not more interesting than Bo- Boian. It's common to link to the name of the son of the devil; lots of people have it." He shrugged again. His name was no big deal.

A critical eye watched as Boian attempted to make his tower, and Damien flashed his teeth in annoyance when the thing crumpled. That was why he so hated working with sand; a simple mistake and it all came crashing down. His insides turned as his opinion was asked again, but he gave it without further complaint, speaking to the moat he was making. "Whatever you want to do. I would try and rebuild it, but you don't have to."

Boian laughed a bit as the older spawn tried to speak his name. "Well That is closer but it is kinda like Bo-inn I think, at least that is how my dad says it." He tilted his head his long ears lowering a bit at the harsher tone to Damien's voice. " It is the the name of the son of the devil? I have never heard it before. Who is the devil?" He asked softly. It was clear that Boian was not well versed in the bible or even in the fact that he was the product of angelic and demonic DNA. "Well if lots of people have the name it must be a pretty powerful name. I wish I had a strong name."

He turned his violet eyes back to the tower and gave a nod, "I see rebuild would be best huh?" He carefully started to scoop the sand back into the bucket it try again. This time he would be determined not to let it break or fall. He needed to move on and make the other three towers so that they would still have some light to collect more things for Damien's bag. Maybe he could find some treasure or something interesting in the search.
