Cat enjoyed being outside, considering that it was the end of August and far too soon, the days would become too cold for him to be comfortable. He half-reclined on a rock, wings stretched out to absorb the warming sunlight. This day was probably going to be very nice; he hadn't had a basic, element-based class in a what felt like a long time. And considering this spawn had a gift for water magic, he felt it completely justified to have his class by the small river that ran through the grounds. A light smile graced his face as he sunbathed. This day was starting out quite pleasantly.

Dane was pleasantly surprised when he found out his magic class wasn't going to be at the facility. It was a small thing but enough to put Dane in a better mood that he wouldn't have to go to that sterile horrible place.
Following the instructions he got Dane made his way to the stream where his teacher was supposed to meet him. After getting lost a couple times the teen finally came to running water and followed it for a while until he noticed someone lounging on a rock, "Cat?" Dane asked approaching.

Cat sat up when his name was called and beamed over at his student, waving him over towards his perch. "That would be me, which must mean you're Dane. It's a pleasure to meet you." The hippogriff's wings stretched for a long minute, and then Cat hopped off of his rock, ready to dive into teaching mode.

"Now, the reason that I had you come all the way out here was because of this bubbling little brook beside us," Cat said with a flourish, the sunlight obviously putting him in a pleasant mood. "Thanks to my own magical gift, I discerned that you, Dane, have a talent for water magic, and I decided this was a much more exciting locale for a lesson than a boring building. Don't you agree?

"Now,"
he continued, barely waiting for an answer, "for your first task, I just want you to try and manipulate the water, move it in an abnormal direction. You can lift it, you can make it flow backwards, you can make it spill over the bank; whatever you want to take a shot at. Make sense?"

Dane was indeed glad that the class was outside, he couldn't appropriately express how glad he was. He was however a little off-put by how chipper Cat seemed to be. During his entire introductory spiel Dane was trying to discern whether or not Cat was being fake or was genuinely that upbeat and talkative.

The plump teenager looked over at the brook when his attention was diverted to a request, "Sure, no problem," Dane said. He figured this was just a way to gauge his ability. Manipulation was pretty easy for him now, it's what he had been practicing most. Stepping a bit closer to the bank he removed his tank top tossing it behind him, he figured working with water magic for a few hours would inevitably end with him getting wet.

Focusing at the water in front of him Dane practiced gathering the energy and making some motions to coax it. It began as a small swell as if something were pushing the water back and forth from in front of the teen. Then it began to rise; more and more water began gaining mass. Once he felt that he had enough Dane began to move the water over his head and he stepped closer to Cat. With a spreading motion of his arms he spread a dome of water with the circumference of about ten feet around them. The sunlight refracted through the thin dome creating strange rainbows and sparkling water droplets that danced around them. It was something he'd figured out just a couple weeks ago, it was something he felt was somewhat impressive, not incredibly useful but it did require a lot of manipulation and focus.

To say that Cat was impressed would have been a massive understatement. He stared in utter awe as the dome encircled him and his student, laughing in quiet disbelief at the beautiful reflections and rainbows surrounding the two of them. Carefully, he turned on the spot, taking in all of the spectacle. He shivered lightly, the cool stream water making the air chill quite comfortably. The childish part of him, awakened by the sunlight, wanted to reach out and touch the magical creation, but he knew that it would risk dissolving it. Instead, he turned towards Dane, letting his pleasure show.

"Wow, talk about going above and beyond the call of duty! Very good, Dane! This is very good indeed; I think you've got manipulation completely under control, if you've taught yourself how to do this!" The hippogriff beamed proudly once again, but then touched his chin thoughtfully. "Hm, but that does pose the question of what I'm going to teach you... Seeing that manipulation would likely just bore you..."

Then, an enlightened glint came into his eye, and he looked sidelong at Dane, a mischievous grin on his face. "What about turning water into ice? Have you got that under your belt yet?"

"Uhm, thank you," Dane said. The teenager was never very good at receiving compliments. He regathered the water from the dome and sent it back into the stream. While Dane would be perfectly fine staying in there all day he figured it would be a little difficult to learn while he was putting all of his focus into keeping the dome up.
"Ice? No, I've never done that before," He said turning back to face Cat. The concept made sense but he'd just never tried it, "Is it similar to water manipulation?"

Cat smiled and nodded at Dane's question, hands gesturing animatedly as he explained. "Yes, it's a subsect of it. I mean, you certainly find people who are talented in ice magic alone, but talented water manipulators can usually master it with a bit of practice. It involves hardening and crystallizing the molecules of water, which takes quite a bit of concentration, I'm sure you can imagine." His grin was reassuring. "Though I have complete confidence in you. Want to give it a try?"
