Jeff Bennett (Dow Jones Newswires)
One year after chaos engulfed the U.S. auto industry, American consumers say cars built by Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. are the tops when it comes to vehicle satisfaction.

Ford's Lincoln-Mercury and GM's Buick brands took the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, in the American Customer Satisfaction Index released Tuesday. Lincoln-Mercury had an 89% customer satisfaction average while Buick was 88%.

This was the first time U.S. auto makers have held the two top spots in the survey. BMW, Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz all finished together with an 86% average.

"It was not long ago when Detroit's products were clustered at the bottom of the industry," said Claes Fornell, founder of the ACSI. "Although very few automakers improved this year, the domestic ones are either steady or have lost less in customer satisfaction compared to international competition."

The results are a boost to two of Detroit's Big Three auto makers. Both Ford and GM have endured their own challenges during the past year as consumer demand remains sluggish. GM took the hardest hit when it filed for bankruptcy last year. Ford is also planning to dissolve its Mercury brand by the end of the year.

Chrysler Group LLC. the smallest of the Detroit auto makers which also filed for bankruptcy and merged with Fiat SpA, didn't fare as well. Its Jeep brand finished in last place and its Dodge nameplate was second to last. The Chrysler brand finished 15th out of the 19 ranked brands.

Nissan Motor Co. showed the biggest customer improvement with a 5.1% improvement over the prior year.

"Although the near future looks promising for General Motors and Ford, at least in a competitive sense, the near term for the economy does not look bright," Fornell said. "Labor markets show no sign of improvement, financial markets are edgy and consumers are cautious at a time when more household spending would be desirable."

The survey breakdown has Lincoln-Mercury at 89%; Buick with 88%; BMW, Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz at 86%; Lexus with 85%; GMC, Honda and Toyota at 84% and Ford, Hyundai and Nissan at 82%.

Volkswagen had 81% followed with Chevrolet, Chrysler, Kia, and Mazda with 80%. Dodge had 78% and Jeep was 77%.

Finally, people are starting to see the light that "domestic" branded vehicles aren't garbage and are just as good as, if not better than, sacred Toyandasans. Props to Nissan for the big improvement too... still hope they burn, though (and a big "******** you" to now Italian owned Chrysler/Jeep). wink

I'm still an avid Nissan supporter. I think their products are top-notch. The 370Z is razor sharp and the GT-R is truly a marvel of engineering, hauling around all that weight with comparatively less power than its competitors and still keeping up with most of them. I've got nothing but love for Nissan. Toyota and Honda are different, though. I believe that they've lost their way, what with Toyota thinking it's beneath them to make a sports car for the masses and doing something so crass as to make the LF-A as expensive as it is, especially considering it isn't even very good. Honda, too. They pulled out of Formula 1 saying they have more important things to tend to, hinting that a greener future is their responsibility and they need to put all of their funding, effort and concentration into it. Meanwhile, GM is very close to releasing the Volt and they're still raping everyone in FIA and Le Mans with the Corvette, and they go and release the new Camaro, too. Nissan's on the same track as GM. They're still racing too, and they're set to unveil the Leaf soon.

I do remember hearing the Toyoda is trying to get Toyota into 'grass roots' racing.

I couldn't agree more. I'm sure by now everyone knows I'm a Toyota whore. They NEED to bring back sports cars. When I saw the Celica/Supra 2012 Concept, I jumped out of my seat. Still loomed on the probable fact it wont happen. I wish so bad they would go back to the days of sports car making. Like mix the insanity of the LF-A with the pure sensation the 2000GT was and goodness.

And in my book, Nissan is second to none but Toyota. They've always pushed boundries with their cars. Hell even with the Coupe version Altima. Nice little car near sports car performance, but still a total family car. Nissan always seems to know how to keep getting better.

And according to Top Gear Datsun was the FIRST producer to ever set the first car layout we know today into succession. Being pedal location, clutch location, steering wheel, shift nob, everything. They even started with the best. xD

Aww, Subaru was not included in the study? Haha.

No, Subaru's exempt because they're doing just fine. The Legacy is brilliant as ever and the new Impreza is nice, so long as it's not that ugly hatch.

Mind you if Toyota ever does release the FT-HS, it will have been mostly Subaru's doing anyway.

Subaru is coming back with the STI sedan (thank god) but they will keep the hatch option for people that want one. (No idea who would want it still though)

It is speculated to actually be released as a Subaru in some markets. Subaru in a press conference released that they were interested in expanding to offer a RWD platform in their lineup. wink

Haha, I have a couple friends with the "ugly hatch". It grow's on ya. I for sure still like the sedan better though.

As far as I understand it, there are 3 models in planning (According to what I've read on random sites over the last year or so). An AWD Subaru Produced Model, an AWD Toyota Produced Model (With a Boxer Engine), and a Toyota Produced RWD with a Toyota V6. I've also heard that like the LF-A, the engine (Of the Toyota V6 Version), will be sent to Yamaha for fine tuning.
