It was beginning to get dark out, so as usual Snaketongue was out and about, looking for anything interesting. There was still enough light to see clearly, but little enough that things cast eerie shadows and gave off an air of mystery.

Just how he liked it.

It hadn't taken long for Tsutaja to get his wolf name, 'Snaketongue', as it was obvious upon his first meeting with the other dogs that he was a silver-tongued charmer. Some might think that the name gave away his scheme, or marked him as a liar, but Snaketongue liked it; it was like a badge of honor.

"Come on out, night creatures, Snaketongue is here to play." He murmured to himself as he strode through the lands, "Let's have a little fun, shall we?" He often talked to himself like this, though only when others were not around, or when he thought nobody could hear him. Snaketongue simply liked to hear himself talk.

Phantomsoul padded out from her den as the sun was going down. Her bright yellow eyes could adjust in the dim light without being in pain, the sunlight too far gone to hurt now. She never liked waking up too early, as sometimes the last light of day still gave her a headache, and that was no way to start a day.

The innocent, shy wild dog decided that today she would do something she didn't normally do. She would go out and say hi to some others. Maybe even pack members she didn't know.

After all, her pups were all grown up and she had nothing more important to do. No morning feedings, no waking them up so they could go out and learn, no helping them with their life. They were all on their own now, and she knew they were all succeeding well. Through them she had learned to be a little more outgoing.

Might as well actually make use of it.

"Shall we?"

She heard someone talking nearby as she padded across the grass, spotting the green wilddog nearby. She was still not the best at speaking, but she had certainly gained a much firmer hold on speaking than when she first arrived.

"Were you... talking to me?"

Snaketongue's ears perked up as he heard a voice other than his own nearby. He recognized the voice as female, shy, and so he turned to face her with a rather coy look on his face.

"Oh, no I wasn't, I'm sorry." He smiled at her, approaching slowly and stopping a respectful distance away. "But I am now. I don't believe we've met before." He stopped and made a face that looked like he was trying very hard to remember, though he was already certain that this female was new to him. "No, I don't think we have. My name is Snaketongue." He bowed his head respectfully to her. "What may I call you? Perhaps you are called Enchantinglady or Lovelyeyes?" He offered with a sincere smile.

"Or perhaps your true name is more beautiful still." He mused, "In fact I am certain of it. No name I could come up with could match yours."

Phantomsoul didn't recognize the look for being coy at all. She had no idea what that meant, really, though she knew show to distrust others when they looked too devious. That knowledge came from before she joined the Peke Na, however, and learned about the Way. Now she trusted her pack mates more easily.

His compliments didn't seem to register either. She just stared at him with a stoic expression, tail not moving behind her. She had a habit of just looking completely blank, like she didn't know how to show emotions that well.

But that didn't mean she didn't feel them. Right now she was feeling a bit embarrassed.

"My name is... Phantomsoul," she delivered at a deadpan, not thinking that was very lovely at all, and certainly not better than the names he had tried. She shook her head. "It's not very beautiful."

"On the contrary, my dear!" He smiled, "Your name is wonderful, mysterious, and most certainly beautiful." He chuckled to himself. What this girl needed was to lighten up. He wagged his tail happily as he began to speak again.

"You don't give yourself enough credit, Phantomsoul. You are beautiful in every way." He meant that honestly, though he usually thought all females were beautiful, but he thought it best to leave that out. "Your eyes shine with such a lovely contrast to your dark coat, and even your coat has a lovely balance in it. I see no flaws in you." He shook his head, "None but one. If you'd just recognize your own beauty, then you would have no flaws."

He moved a little closer and sat down, "No need to be so shy, I don't bite." He offered, "Come, tell Snaketongue all about your troubles and he'll be more than happy to help in any way he can, especially for one so lovely."

She looked at him, her yellow eyes curious. She tilted her head to the side and nodded thoughtfully. Maybe it was a pretty name? She had never thought about it like that, really. She didn't mean to be any of those things, though. Mysterious or wonderful or beautiful.

She liked him saying so, however, as it made her blush under her fur. Even if it didn't show in her body language or on her face.

Though, if he looked hard enough, he would see her tail flicking slightly back and forth behind her.

"You only just met me," she reminded him, "you don't know me in every way... right?" She took others literally a bit too often, though she was getting better at recognizing jokes, "some flaws... you can't see..."

She thought the fact that she couldn't talk very well was a flaw, for example. You couldn't see that, but it was easy to hear it. She thought she had been rather clever to point that out.

"I don't have any troubles... really.... Your wolf name is Snaketongue... why is that?"

"True enough, I do not know you in every way. Not yet, at least, but I would like to!" He grinned, his eyes flashing for a moment to the slight movement in her tail. Excellent. She was at the very good at hiding it, but she was enjoying this talk they were having. "Yet another wonderful trait you have, Phantomsoul, you are quite the intelligent one as well, it seems!" He laughed, "Oh, what I would give to be so talented and beautiful as you!"

"I can tell that you have trouble with speaking." He nodded, "But is that truly a flaw? No, I say it makes you unique! It makes you interesting, a wonderful example of what it means to be different! It is only a flaw if you make it one, my darling."

"My name?" He was a bit surprised at the question, but he barely showed it. "Well, as you may have noticed, I have a mouth that never ceases to speak. My tongue is quick, like that of a snake." He grinned, and stuck his tongue out for a moment for her to see before withdrawing it again to speak.

"But as you will notice, it is not forked like one."

Phantomsoul looked at her, smiling softly. Very softly. To the point where she could feel like she was smiling, but it was probably not noticeable at all on her actual muzzle. Still, she knew she was smiling, and that was the important thing. Wasn't it?

Maybe not. Others really liked showing off their smiles.

She missed any possible innuendo in his statement.

"I would... like to get to know you... too," she said with a slow nod. She tilted her head at his next statement, though. "You want to... be beautiful?"

She thought males wanted to be handsome, not beautiful. But maybe with his bright fur he thought beautiful was more fitting. If that was how he thought, she certainly couldn't argue with him. Anyway, he said he didn't mind the way she spoke, which made her more inclined to stay in his company. Not that anyone around here had ever judged her for it, but she was still self conscious.

"I did notice... that's good. It would be... odd... to have a snake's... tongue," she nodded, moving closer to him, then padding past, indicating for him to follow. "I can... show you around... if you'd like."

Snaketongue could not quite tell if she was smiling back at him or not. It almost looked like she wanted to, but she didn't. How strange. Still, who said strange was a bad thing? He was quite enjoying this meeting with the beautiful female.

"Then it is decided, we shall get to know each other better." Success! At least, the first step to his ever-present goal. It was still too early to tell if he would get anywhere beyond friendship with Phantomsoul, but he was not one to give up until he was certain either way. "Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder." He nodded, "To me, you are the most beautiful thing in sight, even with those lovely stars starting to peek out of their hiding places, you shine all the brighter!" He wagged his tail happily, "I want to be beautiful in your eyes, my dear."

He laughed, "Yes, very odd indeed. I imagine it would make grooming more difficult as well." He tried not to think too hard about what it would be like to literally have the tongue of a snake. "A tour would be most appreciated, Phantomsoul." He followed her eagerly, "I still have much to learn here, and it is an honor for you to offer to share your wisdom with me."

Phantomsoul tilted her head at him, regarding him for a long moment before she shook her head.

"I don't... shine brighter than... stars..." she pointed out seriously, missing the compliment that time and thinking him serious, "my coat is dark...."

She didn't think she would ever think of him as beautiful, since that was a very girly word and he was clearly a very boyish male. But if he wanted her to, she would just have to give it a try. That's what friends would do, she imagined, and she knew Risktaker told her she should make more friends.

So she opted to give him the tour, which would last for most of the night, giving him explanations in her slow, shy way, pausing to think of the more difficult words, and telling him without excitement about how much she loved the pack, and the different areas. Though she never showed it, she meant every word. She couldn't think of a place she loved more.

And maybe now it would be even better, since she had made a friend.

"Not literally, my dear." He laughed, "You have a wonderful sense of humor! No, your personality, your heart, your very essence shines brightly, even though your coat hides it well. I can see clearly now why you have the name that you do; your soul is so bright but is concealed like a phantom by your coat. Only your eyes betray your inner self."

Snaketongue continued to follow her through the lands, listening intently to her explanations and all the while finding new ways to compliment and flatter her. Her emotionless way of speaking made her harder to read than most, but he could tell ever so faintly that she was sincere when she spoke of how much she loved the pack.

He could also tell that she sincerely enjoyed his company.

After the tour, Snaketongue bid her farewell with the promise of finding her again sometime in the near future, a promise he fully intended on keeping. He had not yet figured out if she would fall for him or not, and so he would persist until he did.
