Staples are old school cards from back in the day that never got banned. Cards like heavy Storm, Mystical Space Typhoon and Mirror force are a must for every deck. Bottomless Trap Hole and Torrential tribute are also good staples.

Anata wa watashi ga zutto mae ni "sayounara" to yutta hito wo omoidasaseru. If you want to get back into the game competitively, buy three of the Machina deck and make a deck based around Machina Fortress.
That's just for starters though. Arguably, Machina are the cheapest meta-deck available. The most common builds I've seen with them are Machina-Jinzo (based off of field swarm with Fortress and Jinzo/Jinzo Lord) or Machina-Gears (based off of using Geartown and swarming with Gadjiltron Dragon and Machina Fortress).
If you don't have a Mirror Force, buy the Marik deck when it comes out in the states on October 19th.
Gold Sarcophagus can be seen as another staple. You have a 50/50 shot of getting on when Duelist Revolution: Special Edition hits the shelves. It comes with a common Mirror Force and some other things.
As for if you don't want to play competitively...just skim the newest packs here and look for something you feel like playing.
You remind me of someone I said goodbye to a long time ago.

i agree about getting the three machina decks to start with, but moving on from there you should try to find some cheap singles on ebay or something to bolster your deck. Machina isnt gonna win very much against stuff like infernities and sabers because its a tad slow, so maybe look for stuff to help that. Or a better idea would be to invest money in some gold series three boxes since they showcase a lot of what was popular recently and will be soon. It comes with lots of blackwings, which are decent, along with some destiny hero support. Plus the gold rares include stuff like plaguspreader and thunderking rai-oh, which always help.

If you're just getting back into the game and you don't have any cards nor an idea for a deck, buy any one starter/structure deck you see and build off of that. Once you have that, get help on improving that deck here and we should be able to help you with what cards you can use to increase the deck's power as well as where to find said cards.
