Her ears stood erect in the approach, wild and nasty winds from the North shipping with them the smell of rotting corpses ready for decay. It made the teen cringe, her yellow eyes narrowed as if she no longer wanted to see what was before her, but those firey paws continued to take her further away from that place...life past the mountains had been difficult to say the least, but thankfully the hardest decision had been made and it was now all over. For better or worse, what damage done and the plans plotted and executed gave no reason for Eveleen to feel the guilt. Not yet, that is.
She had left no room for error in her descent from the snowy mountain tops, evading what terrors her littermates bestowed upon the malicious pack they called family. Not even they knew she had left them to finish the job, but if they had not already assumed it then they were wrong to have ever included her. The girl would gladly start the fight, but wasn't one to stick around for such drama and chaos, not when she was well aware of what would come in the end. As Eve stepped onto new soil she tilted her head back and took in a deep breath.
Mmmm....ahhhh.
Air was plentiful here, the skies were clear and the wind only carried as much soot and destruction as was appropriate to the day and event. Eveleen knew her older brothers and sisters would some day come down from their high thrones in search for her, but with so many different smells to take in she was at least certain a reunion wouldn't come about for several more months. A simple morning tune played high within the trees from birds she had never heard before, and around her the wild moved about freely; there were so many trees, shrubs, and other obstacles to protect them! Eveleen had never seen this much green in all of her life, and taking several more steps into the foliage left her stunned and grateful. With how thick the brush was, she wondered if she could round up a couple of months to at least a year....tops.
Sinking her toes into the fresh dirt and inhaling what was the cleanest air to the she wolf, Eveleen proceeded through the foreign territory without another thought of kin; not even when her snout met with a river and her tongue lapped its first of taste of Telk water.

It was always something, he thought. But never without complaint, no, never. Silas was a patient soul, mayhaps to a fault. Here most might have left the old woman by now, dragged down in her daily battles to fight the demons inside her, but not him! Nope, Silas believed the wolf who had picked him up and raised him deserved better than abandonment, yessiree! Soul was his surrogate grandmother, mother, sister - all the family he remembered and needed to remember. Whatever had happened to his real family he'd never know, but there wasn't time to think about that when he needed to be out and about looking for better bedding; Soul was mentioning the ground felt too rough for her to lay down upon comfortably.
Another plus about being around the old wolf - Silas never had to worry about his little . . . problem. If he did have to deal with it around her, well, he would be one of the most shamed wolves around.
Moving slowly so as to enjoy the forest's shade and the scent of trees, Silas kept a sharp eye out for anything he could consider softer bedding. Feathers, certain leaves, he'd even resort to soil if he had to. Still, even when not directly under the sun he could feel the heat getting to him, and eventually the teen found himself panting as he padded about. Well alright, just a quick drink around the bend and then back to work -
Well, that is until he saw what looked like fire and froze. If a wolf could sweat, he would have broken out into a good one. Fire! But wait, it didn't look right. It wasn't moving and cackling evilly or . . . or producing smoke or anything. Wha . . . ? And then Silas realized he was looking upon a rather wolf-shaped fire that was un-firely bent right at the water and taking it in and - oh, it was a wolf alright.
Best not disturb, he thought, and backstepped right onto a branch (which of course didn't look like it had been there before, but now was for his inconvenience). The crack was like thunder in his ears, and Silas did what Silas always did when wanting to avoid danger without the ability to move: he froze as stiffly as the trees about him and attempted to blend in.

Between her lips the water dribbled and dripped, slipping from the corners of her mouth as if the young girl could not get enough of it. Cool and refreshing was the water here, and while her maw kept to the steady stream Eve let her mind open up and wander.
She missed how her pack used to be that way; living amongst the other wolves was just as effortless as breathing. Where troubles always seemed to be miles away once one could roll around in soft patches of grass during the Spring or take walks through the corridors of trees lined with icicles in the Winter. Eveleen loved when her spirit did not feel the binds of a traditional pack...she wished she could go back in time and relive the days of her puppy-hood.
But as is with all dreams, they are unreliable and fade. When times began to change and their lives crumbled before a relentless king, she could not help but feel the sanctity of freedom disappear with most of the hope left in her family and loved ones. Leaving seemed the most logical pursuit to happiness, and doing whatever it took to leave would be a mistake she would neither regret nor condone.
It had been her time anyway, the fire nymph of the mountains. She needed her escape to come in whatever form it took, and now she stood amongst the evergreen wood of some new territory...that all but sent her away tail-tucked and ears pinned back. Eveleen would have ignored the wood breaking if it meant she could stop dwelling on her past and look forward to what bright future waited ahead; but her senses were peaked and cautious on these new grounds. She could not risk her life on fantastical imaginings, not when there was so much of it left to live.
Every hair on her body rose and bristled, flicking about in the wind as angrily as fire would. But she did not peel back her lips and hiss in disapproval; no, that was Eve's style. Her brightly colored eyes flicked back over her shoulder and fluttered, tail swaying side to side with some interest. What she hoped to find was a squirrel or nothing at all, finally bringing her lean frame to face the wooded backdrop.
Eveleen's body was small and her face narrow, much like that of a foxes and yet she had a presence that screamed strength. It needed persuasion at times, peeking through her cracks and crevices in a variety of ways, but none could reject the feeling. All four of her paws were planted in the soil firmly but the rest of her seemed to relax somewhat when not even a leaf was seen.
In any case she whispered to the woods. "Hello?"

Oh gosh, Silas, what've you done? Just . . . Just walk away. Pretend it didn't happen. Yeah, like he could so much as move now that the wolf was looking around and - oh no. Oh no no no. He shouldn't have been saying such things about a pretty girl like that, but no no no! Why couldn't she be ugly? It'd be easier to bolt from an ugly wolf. No harm, no foul. Easy as pie. Things happened like that all the time.
Not with him, though. Not with him and pretty girls.
Nonononono! Think of Soul! Think of the errand! Get bedding: nice, soft bedding. Oh yes, he'd so go to bed with that nice soft a** -
HEY. NO. BAD.
It was about around here that Silas would be tucking his tail inbetween his legs for more reasons than just submission, but should he risk the movement just to save face? You know, the face she wasn't supposed to be seeing? Which was when Silas realized he unstiffenedwas already making faces at her, the rather shame-making oggly eyes . . . Ah, he might as well. Joints cracking a little as he himself (except in the area where it matter most), he gave a sort of nervous greeting woof. "Er, um, hiya?" he said, more eloquence lost on him. "I'm not, um, I'm not interrupting something am I? 'Cause I could totally go away right now if you need."

When her sights (finally) fell on the teen, they softened immediately. She was impartial to adults considering their age and wisdom, but teens; they were young, ruthless, and naive. She too shared in the ignorance but more so then that the girl played off those of others...With a wide-spreading, charming-to-look-at grin, she returned his woof with a playful growl.
"Oh, there you are."
It was as if she had been staring at him the entire time. The males coat was so dark and lined so particularly that he almost LOOKED like a tree. Eve had heard of camouflage, but his parents had taken it to the extreme...His was a handsome coat though, with those green strips coiling up his sides and those eyes peeking through a deep brown base--there were times when Eveleen felt attracted to one wolf more then another, sensing that any offspring had would benefit and prosper; and this male certainly drew that from her.
She kept smiling in his direction to ease any tension, not yet comfortable enough to sink into a seat but certainly much happier to know who (or what) the sound had come from. Her face remained as placid as it could, a dash of curiosity hiking her brows as she registered his words, his scent, and most importantly his face. Finally, her lips parted. "I would be offended if you left. Especially since you have yet to introduce yourself; wouldn't that be rude? Coming up on a young girl only to scare her and then scamper off?" Eve quickly replaced surprise with mock sorrow, wrinkling her face just so she looked sad but not in pain...and definitely not hard to look at.
Gesturing with a slight jerk of her head, Eveleen beckoned the male forward.
“If nothing else, come and do what it was you were aiming to before you even saw me sitting here.”

Well she did have a point. Looking at her, then hiding and running away: it all sounded like he was some sort of creeper. Yeah. Really great impression there. Poor Silas, he was reading the girl's expressions a little too well and thought them true for the most part - like she was only acting partially in jest. Imagine, what if he had startled her more and made her attack him? Well, least I would've gotten a good look at her face before dying, Silas thought with an inner shrug. Yeah. A very comforting thought for a very cowardly wolf. The only thing that pleased him more than that was the fact that it took her a moment to place him even when he was moving and had announced his position.
"Well, um, don't want to offend no lady, nope, not at all." He approached at his own risk, wondering briefly if maybe she was half-fox, how small and narrow-faced she was. Her size probably meant that if he drew near, he'd have to compensate by tilting his head down - Silas was a rather long-limbed teen, even if he wasn't exactly rippling with muscles. His tail was still noticeably tucked in, but Silas learned that if he focused more between a girl's eyes, his problem wasn't as noticeable. The trick worked . . . for now. He released his manhood from its furry prison but kept his backlegs close, not daring to draw too close to her but now a few feet from his original position.
"I was, ah, just looking around for some things," Silas explained, for the moment able to keep his gaze only on her face, trying a smile on. to return hers "My mom needs more bedding for our den right now, so I'm trying to find leaves, maybe feathers, soft stuff like that. Oh! I'm, um," - what was his name again? - "I'm Silas, miss," he introduced, bowing his head a tad. "'Gain, I didn't mean to startle, I was, um, just doin' that stuff before I saw you. Thought I was looking at a living fire."

Eveleen was as still as stone and yet her fur continued to sway; he was right to have mistaken her for fire! She only wished more would say the same, considering what kind of ember burned within her. "Fire, you say?" It ended without question, being rhetorical in nature.
Unlike the boys set gaze, her eyes moved all along the contours of his build and worked their way from face to tail—snorting softly and oh so discreetly at what his had coyly tried to hide. The males excitement did not surprise her. Eveleen was used to being gawked at, and yet she felt the peak of interest pull her attention toward the 'innocent' tuck three or four times before forcibly disregarding it. What an odd boy, she thought silently with a tilt of her head. His stammers were noted with shy laughter that held not even an ounce of mockery. Although Eveleen often resorted to acting, the moment she stood in now and any feelings that surfaced were genuine. Very odd, but very cute. "Silas" She murmured softly at last, bowing her head in the same regards as he had. His name sounded just as she had meant for it to; playful, and in hopes to rid the boy of his troubles, she released her stronghold on pride and instinct to set her rear on the soil. This position gave Eveleen reason to straighten up and look the part of a maturing individual, after all she was the bigger person in helping out a poor adolescent.
The moments steadily passed after that, her omnipotent grin and desiring gaze catching in every breath he took. She was far more used to confrontations then he seemed to be and yet the boy pulled through...if not shakily, admirably. Talk of a parent did not phase the female visibly, but an inner voice began to prod at her ankles. She should not pry into the lives of others, least she want to risk becoming a part of more family drama...but Eveleen could not help but reach out and inquire. "So your momma needed bedding...Hm. And you thought you'd find bedding near the river? It is kind of moist don't you think? Maybe you should look under those leaves over there, nearer to the forest...looks very soft, wouldn't you agree?"

Hell yeah, you look soft, he found himself thinking almost immediately in response, and dumbly nodded to whatever she just said. Something about leaves and a forest, which would be a very nice place to sit in the shade side by side - maybe she was a warm, nay as hot] as she looked. Make the summer feel cold in comparison. But wait, then their breaths would be really hot too, and it'd make it all feel muggy and moist and aaaaagh, why was he grossing himself out before he even knew her name?! Soul was right, he thought too much about things.
Problem was if he didn't, well, more impulsive actions would have actually happened by now . . .
"Y-Yeah. Kinda stupid huh," Silas admitted sheepishly, feeling very much like worms were crawling over him as she scrutinized. He found himself taking a deep breath through his nose to make himself look larger than he was, tightening muscles to at least show some form of definition - anything to make him look less gangly. "Truth is, I wanted to stay in the shade as much as possible; I, um, I don't do well with heat. Heh, kinda like bark on fire," he attempted to quip, which he then belatedly realized sounded like a horrible implication.
Jesus, that was an ill-timed freudian slip!
"That's, um, I mean!" He found himself inadvertently copying her, plopping his bum down like the noise alone would distract her from his awkwardness. Quick, say something else! "You're really hot, did you know that?"
WRONG.

"Not stupid!" It came out quite loudly, catching even the girl by surprise. She knew from experience what self-ridicule could do to an individual. Several of her siblings were prone to the act and dozens more who resided with her had tendencies that went beyond that. Her smoldering gold eyes shut for a time, a soft breath slipping between her lips held ajar; he continued where she had stopped short, and although her mind had wandered some Eve had not lost the conversation flow.
A look of concentration enveloped her face as he stumbled through his own words. "There, there." She eased into speaking just after he finished, lifting her chin away from her chest and tilting her head entirely to one side. "You are quite right about the heat, in fact I came to this spot for that reason alone...Now it would seem I have found water and another to share it with. I would sit in the shade..." Then, like clockwork she rose onto her feet and turned toward the river with motions so fluid it might have seemed as if she had never faced him at all. "But I am still thirsty. Perhaps you'd like to join me instead?" Glancing over her shoulder, her eyes called for him eagerly.
"We could make a trade: You drink with me, and I will go home with you. To bring bedding for your mother of course..."

The loudness of her almost knee-jerk response startled him visibly - a tilt back of the ears, a slight wince. He was so used to Soul's tone and voice that anything louder made him skittish; well he already was kind of skittish to begin with, but this didn't help. When she shut her eyes, Silas allowed himself a small in-out breath to get over the odd ejaculation and . . . stare at her face while she wasn't looking. It was a nice view. Really, it was. He wondered, quite briefly, what she might have been thinking about. And then he started getting lost in the small details, how the gold sprouted from the edges of her eyes and grew larger as it spread out -
- And then abruptly she was speaking again, and the first few words were lost as Silas grabbed ahold of himself. It was normal, how easily entranced he was; and he felt the oddest impulse to copy the movement's of her head - always following, always seeking others' example. His legs even twitched as if to get up and trot at her heels when she stood and returned to the river. Only at her eyes' invitation did Silas find himself rising and joining her, still zombie-like.
And then his heart leapt at her offer, and he found himself babbling once more. "A-Anything for a lady!" the male all but barked, his boyishness bordering on obnoxious levels as his tail wagged. "Mom would love you, I know I would." Wait that came out wrong. Or it was right, but not in the right way. Aaaagh. "A-And I'd really appreciate the help. Mom's old and stuff, I want her to have the best I-I can give, y'know?"
You know. Five, maybe six minutes of knowing a girl, and he's smitten. Wasn't that love?
Silas found his face burning. Taking the initiative, he dove his head into the river to gulp down some water and give himself a few seconds to cool down.
