 Recent events have made me decide to make a topic about this (and not just the Gaia item...someone told be about some on DeviantArt too).
So just discuss Art Theft.
Or, if you want to make the topic broader: Antiquity theft and if antiquities that were recovered years ago before there were laws regulating them should be returned to their country of origin (which would mean A LOT of museums would lose large chunks of their collections)
I'm too lazy to put my own thoughts now.

All too often on DeviantArt people submit tracings of other people's work.
I'm a member of a Minato/Kushina club thing (they're characters from Naruto) and it seems all too often it's happening. It's really irking me. They take all credit for the work too, and there's no nod at the original artist. And since I've seen almost every Yondaime Hokage fan art out there, I can easily place who they stole that piece from. >_>'' I don't even think dA does anything about it, either.

Yep. I saw thefts of works on DeviantArt a lot lately. At least I didn't notice at first though.

Yeah...that's what partly spawned this thread. Today someone linked me to someone who got caught tracing. There's a whole youtube vid proving that they were tracing. But all their dumb fans are like "awww, it's okay, you didn't do anything bad"

But to those who can't do art, you get kinda screwed out when people copyright every image they make.
Even simple ones like feathers carry them these days.

But did you post it on a site and claim it was yours? Or enter it in a contest?
Making a sig image or a personal desktop image isn't really the same thing (technically it's theft, but most people don't care/mind if you do that...as long as you don't take credit)

I posted it on a site, didn't claim it was mine though. *points at profile* Every image in the layout I found then manipulated.

I don't think profiles like that are a big deal as long as you don't go "look I made this completely from scratch". I mean, a lot of people like to show what things they're fans of...and unless they're going to draw fanart they don't have much choice but to use preexisting images.

I know as far as Gaia is concerned, it's only an issue if you claim the image you're posting.

I always upload my images to DA before I post them anywhere else, because DA shows the date of upload. That way I can refer back and show exactly when/where I first posted something if anything were to happen with my art- not that I think anyone wants to steal any of mine- though if I had the money to pay for better copyright licenses on my crap, I would.

Art theft is stupid neutral
People won't think you're any less of a man (or woman or Zurg or whatever) just because you lack a certain kind of artistic skills. However, they will think you're less of a person for stealing someone else's work.
There is, however, a difference between using someone else's work as, say, a background on your profile, without credit to that person, and taking someone else's work and posting it on your dA or whatever and saying you made it. In one instance you just aren't giving credit where credit is due, in the other you're stealing.
