Roi Bara is 23 years old, and her heart is broken when her best childhood friend, Riley Ashford, decides to date another girl. Seeing that she wasn't fast enough, she grew apart from the boy and pursued her dream to become a nurse.
She returns, meets Ty Gaiden, and the two marry. However, she sees Riley around town since he has not moved away. After a period of time of treating him hatefully, she breaks down and confesses her love to him. And the two have a one night stand.
This would come back on her, as there was a witness to the affair, Toku Prescott, who uses it as blackmail. So long as they do exactly as he says, he won't tell their spouses. They do so, often times Roi finds herself being the butt end of being hurt, emotionally or even physically.
Roi sees Riley often at the hospital she now works at, and even gives him the pills he needs for his depression. Soon after, they stop their affair and all seems well.
Well, except the child they share together, Mei. Mei is raised as Roi and Ty's child, though the truth is it's actually Roi and Riley's child. Roi keeps this a secret, even from Riley himself. She tells him, years later. And Toku comes back once this information is out.
And it's to be regretted. Roi and Ty are pained to know that Mei was murdered, and left in the wooded area behind the park Roi and Riley originally had started their affair, as if it were a slap in the face and a punishment.

Roi had her suspicions, but she knows 100% she is right. There is no Toku. Or to put more accurately, Riley is Toku. As Roi finds out, Toku is the man that raped Riley's wife when they were younger. Not surprisingly, Riley was absolutely crushed that something like that happened, and embodied everything bad into Toku. Including his own bad mistakes.
Toku is a real man, it's just he's been in prison for another crime. The Toku that harassed Roi and Riley was merely an illusion in Riley's head, something for him to blame all his bad decisions on.
Roi also realizes that there is another side to Riley, his true feelings. When this side of Riley comes out, he only focuses on her, and even bashes his own wife, Samii. This side of Riley frightens her, if only because how sly, underhanded, and cruel he is.
And as it turns out, he's the one that murdered Mei.
Roi and Riley run away together in the end, however Riley's fear of losing Roi to her family (Ty and Erin) is the final straw. Roi is kidnapped, and learns Riley has slaughtered not only her family, but his own family and another, if only because her daughter was visiting them.
The nightmare comes to a close when their third member of their childhood group, Marcus Addison, shoots Riley in fear he'll hurt Roi.
