What's your favourite cover song done of an original song? (For example, Karl Wolfe covering Toto's original song "Africa," or DJ Sammy covering Bryan Adams' hit "Heaven")

On a related note, do you approve of cover songs? Dislike? Stuck on the fence?

I don't mind Alien Ant Farm's version, but I can not deny how much I love the original.

and in the Same theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meT2eqgDjiM This is the one Cover of recent memory I can honestly say I adore.

I like video game cover bands though I doubt that counts for anything aside from pointing out how much of a nerd I am.

Though I am a fan of Covers when done well, I Hate ones that butcher the classic though.

I loved ATU's cover of I've Just Seen A Face.

And I honestly thought AAF's version of Smooth Criminal was okay. I'm not a rock fan.

I disapprove heavily of Queen covers - nobody can emulate Freddie Mercury's voice.

Gah, I'm trying to think of covers that I actually like now... I quite like most of the versions of Running Up That Hill (the original is by Kate Bush). Oh, and the Johnny Cash cover of Hurt by NIN is fantastic. I like the Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright versions of Hallelujah, but I love the original too. Dylan wrote quite a few songs that have been covered well.

I hate it when artists who haven't been around for long who tackle older songs that have bene well-established to be classics. Like, Avril Lavigne awhile back doing a cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", or Karl Wolfe doing a cover of "Africa" (the song is not bad, but I *hate* the video).

Avril's Version of that song didn't turn out that well in my opinion either, regardless of intentions. As for Africa, I like the songs in both instances, but man, is a cover a bad way to enter the fray of Televised Music. That is like if I today made a video of my version of Runnin' with the Devil or Paint it Black. Seems like an amazing mistake to me but alas, my opinion means nil for this one since it makes no difference.

LoL yeah, like write a couple albums of original material before you tackle covers, eh? There are artists who are exceptions to this of course, but they're generally the ones with *actual* talent.

Black Betty by Lynyrd Skynyrd's a good one

I don't really like covers, they don't tend to outperform the original.
Beat It by Fall Out Boy is terrible
Because I like Tears for Fears' so much better, Gary Jules' Mad World just doesn't do it for me.

Rasputina does an excellent cover of Wish You Were Here.
