It was early on a Sunday morning when Jianyu was rudely awakened by the sound of rather irritating screech. He blinked blearily, rolling over on his futon and rubbing his eyes with one hand. The sun's rays were just barely beginning to streak into his room, the sky a dark purpley orange and dotted with bits of gold here and there. Jianyu yawned. He closed his eyes again, pressing his face into his pillow.
There was another shriek, this one higher pitched. Jianyu sighed. Pushing aside the covers, he stood up, stretching his limbs before pulling on a dark blue silk bathrobe over his nightclothes. He slid open the door to his room and padded down the hallway towards the kitchen. It was there that he found his mother and one of his sisters sitting at the dining table, an exasperated expression on his mother's face.
"What happened now?" Jianyu asked, running a hand through his hair, loose about his shoulders. He walked over to the cabinet, fixing himself a cup of tea. "Why must you all look so upset? Did Junjie finally run away?"
"Yes."
Jianyu nearly dropped his teacup. His eyes widening, he turned to look at his mother.
"That was meant to be a mocking remark." he said, stunned. "A jest."
Ehuang sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Well, I'm afraid it's true." she said. "He eloped."
This time, Jianyu really did drop his empty cup. He fumbled and caught it at the last second.
"He did...what?" he asked. His older brother was not the brightest man alive, that was certain. He was quite handsome, with jet black hair and blue eyes. However, Junjie had a habit of thinking he was the most wonderful creature ever created. This, obviously, was not true, and even more disturbing was the fact that Junjie had a habit of doing things without thinking about them previously. But he had never before done anything so rash as to actually elope.
"Who is the woman?" Jianyu asked his mother. Euhang looked down at the note in her fingers, squinting to read it.
"A girl by the name of...Koga...Natsuko." she said.
Jianyu's blood froze in his veins. He turned, very slowly, to look at his mother.
"Her name is...what?" he asked again, his voice icy. His mother frowned slightly.
"Koga Natsuko." she said. "Why - "
Jianyu did not hear the rest of his mother's question. He was already out the door of his house, running down the street at a breakneck speed. This was not happening, this could not happen. Of all the people that Junjie could have eloped with...no, it was a mistake, it had to be a mistake. There were plenty of Koga's in the area, weren't there?
Jianyu reached his destination in a matter of minutes, and he burst into the Koga Inn, slamming open the doors in his haste.
"YUUDAI!" he yelled, startling several people sitting in the waiting area. "KOGA YUUDAI WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?!"

Yuudai's anger was not explosive, not when it was truly important. When he was embarrassed or flustered, yes. When his personal pride was on the line, he was much more likely to be comically irritated than not, but this was a different matter entirely.
As usual, he had been up very early, before even his sisters. He'd gone to the kitchen to prepare breakfast, and it had been uneventful. Uneventful, at least, until Shizuka had come in, eyes wide and teary, and told him that she couldn't find Natsuko, and held up an unopened note in shaking hands.
She had come to Yuudai, of course, because even more than their parents, he was the caretaker -- he was the one that Shizuka at least went to when there was a crisis. He had very carefully taken the letter, opened it, and read its entire contents.
Natsuko's handwriting was elegant and very feminine, beautiful to behold no matter how mundane the subject matter was, much like his sister herself. Long, fair hair and baby blue eyes coupled with a pleasing figure and a soft, dreamy personality were just what most men were looking for. The number of men he had sent away lovelorn was too many to count, because even though she wasn't the brightest young woman she was attractive and pleasant.
Apparently, however, she had met her match.
He heard his name being called from rooms away, but as he slowly lowered the note, it didn't occur to him to shout back. Yuudai was tight-lipped and pale, one hand trembling slightly from concealed anger, the other gripping the paper tight enough to form deep creases in it.
Stepping around Shizuka, he walked slowly through the kitchen, strode down the hall until he met his father half-way. Noboru was calm but serious faced as he escorted a livid Jianyu toward him, and they met in the center of the hall, father and son exchanging a silent look.
"Jianyu," Yuudai said, voice remarkably steady for someone as livid and embarrassed as he was. "I assume... you received a similar note to this?"
He held the note out, turning it so that his sister's pristine handwriting was revealed, and added, "Please come with me to my room so that we may discuss this without disturbing the customers further."
With that, he turned on his heel, stalking quickly toward his private quarters.

Jianyu did not appreciate being told to do anything by the innkeeper, more especially anything that required being scolded by him. But Yuudai's obvious anger, his slender face stained with red, his hands trembling just barely as he held out a familiar piece of parchment, was enough to confirm his worst suspicions. Jianyu's heart sank. Junjie, his stupid, stupid brother, had run off with a member of the innkeeper's family. He didn't know how exactly they were related, but he hoped to dear Lunaria that she was a cousin, a second cousin, his niece. Someone other than what he suspected might be the real truth.
Following Yuudai down the hall, Jianyu barely kept his anger in check. He was more livid than he had been in a very long time, and it was making him feel hot and slightly lightheaded. As soon as they were both inside of Yuudai's room, Jianyu's hands shot out, his fingers wrapping around the innkeeper's wrist, dragging him towards him. Jianyu reached out, and snatching the note from him, began to read, keeping Yuudai's wrist held tightly. His stomach felt tight as he read Koga Natsuko's flowery, clean script, her overly joyous words, and every worst suspicion in his mind was now confirmed. Jianyu turned a livid gaze towards Yuudai.
"Natsuko is...your sister?" he asked tightly, his voice trembling with the effort to keep his voice steady. A burning anger was searing through his veins, and it was all he could do not to reach out and strangle Yuudai. Jianyu knew, really, that it was not the innkeeper's fault that Junjie was an idiot, that obviously both of their siblings were complete morons, but Yuudai was here in front of him and Junjie was not. Jianyu's fingers tightened around the younger man's wrist.
"How the hell," Jianyu said, holding the paper up in front of Yuudai's face. " - did this happen?"

Yuudai's room was modest and clean, everything in its proper place and meticulously dusted. One wouldn't expect anything less of him, given how much pride he took in his own work ethic as well as his home, but a person's room said a lot about them. What furnishings were present were sparse but richly colored, in deep reds and golds; there was a beautiful print taking up nearly the entire face of one wall, a tranquil scene that never failed to bring him peace when he looked at it. It was no surprise that this was the first place his eyes wandered, held, while Jianyu gripped his wrist.
It hurt, a little, and his eyes narrowed, but he let Jianyu read the entirety of the note. It wasn't long, but it was certainly full of the childish, glowing delusions that they would be happy forever, that though what they were doing was wrong everyone would forgive them because it was true love. Well, true love -- if such a thing even existed, if someone would really choose love over a suitable match, over duty and honor -- it was hardly a foundation to build a life on. True love didn't put food on the table, didn't pay the bills or keep clothes on your loved ones' backs. It was fine and well to say that all you needed was that one person, but it simply wasn't true.
The paper was thrust in his face again, and instead of immediately looking at it, he used his free hand to pry Jianyu's fingers away from his wrist. He didn't comment, and manfully resisted the urge to massage it; there were, however, bright red loops around his skin, evidence of how tightly it had been held. His own face was pale and almost eerily still, and under different circumstances, it might have been amusing. On a regular day, Jianyu was the one whose temper would be quieter, his own fast and loud.
"I was unaware," he said slowly, lacing his hands in front of himself, knuckles going white from tension, "that they were seeing one another. So I am just as surprised as you are."
And obviously just as displeased, if one were to look at the tightness to the corners of his eyes, the way his jaw immediately tensed when he was finished speaking.

Jianyu repressed the urge to slam his fist right into the innkeeper's unnaturally calm face. He didn't understand how Yuudai was managing to stay so reserved when there was an enormous crisis on his - on both of their hands. He struggled to reign in his furious temper, breathing heavily as he turned away from the innkeeper, running his hands through his hair in an effort to keep from strangling him.
"How is it..." Jianyu said, his voice shaking slightly with anger. "That neither of us were aware that such a thing was occurring until it is too late to prevent it from happening? How in hell did this happen? Junjie - my brother - he is a stupid man. I am not surprised that he would do something like this, but to have it happen with your - your sister of all...of all..."
Jianyu stopped abruptly, a horrifying comprehension dawning in his mind. His brother. Yuudai's sister. They had eloped, were married now under Lunaria law, which meant...
Which means that Yuudai and I are now related.
Jianyu swore. Loudly, and obscenely (Bataar would have been proud). His foot lashed out, and he kicked a stack of papers that was sitting in a neat pile on the floor, feeling an odd sort of twisted satisfaction when they went scattering across the floor. He swung back around to face the innkeeper.
"So, what now?" he snarled. "Brother?"

It was one thing to have a crisis on his hands. Yuudai could handle crises, had to handle crises; one day he would be the owner of this inn and he would have a hundred such events during the day that could be classified as a minor crisis, and he would have to deal with them calmly and swiftly. He thought he was handling this remarkably well, all things considered, when one factored in the shame and anger that had to come along with one's family member doing something so disrespectful as eloping and marrying with the consent of their family. They were both in the same position, and though Yuudai didn't particularly like Jianyu, there was truth to the fact that they were now related. Brothers.
Under Lunaria's law, Jianyu was now his family, and by extension his family was also Yuudai's family -- Legion or Noble, it did not matter, and could not matter any more. Just as he was still the best of friends with Ran despite his family's convictions, he would have to learn to embrace Jianyu as a brother because he was a brother. It galled him, but it was as simple a fact as anything in his mind and heart, and family was the singlemost important thing to Yuudai.
"Brother," he said, eyebrows drawing in, a slightly distasteful expression on his face. "Brother, we will simply do what is best for both of our families. We will have to locate them... make certain they are officially married under Lunaria's law, and if they are not then they certainly will be in short order. Our family is not going to bear the disgrace of a failed elopement," he muttered, hands tucked around his abdomen.
And then, after a moment, he added, "Pick those up and rearrange them. That was very rude of you."

This was ridiculous. Yuudai, Junjie, Natsuko, the whole situation was completely and utterly ridiculous. It wasn't that Jianyu was having a difficult time comprehending the fact that his Idiot Brother had decided to run off and elope; he could accept that fact all too easily. After all, Junjie had a habit of doing absolutely nothing worthwhile and tended to merely stare at himself in the mirror for several hours a day. No, it was the fact that out of all the citizens of Lunaria; the thousands upon thousands of young, beautiful girls milling about Lunaria's lands that the one person his Idiot Brother had to choose to elope with was the innkeeper's own sister.
This was a nightmare. Jianyu reached up, massaging the side of his head with his fingers. The beginnings of a headache were beginning to thread through his mind, making him close his eyes briefly.
"What is best for my family is for my Idiot Brother to wind back time and decide against this elopement." Jianyu said irritably, pressing harder against his temples. "Seeing as how that is not exactly an option at the current moment, I am forced to accept the second best alternative - namely your suggestion of finding them to make sure that they have not disgraced us both."
Jianyu let out a small, annoyed sigh, opening his eyes. He dropped his hands and folded his arms across his chest, arching one dark eyebrow at Yuudai. Although he knew (somewhere) that what he had done was, in fact, rude, he did not much appreciate being told what to do, especially under the current circumstances.
"I will not." Jianyu said, somewhat petulantly. "Besides, they look better where they are now."

Being puerile was obviously going to do them no good, but it was clear to Yuudai who was the more adult and mature individual in this case despite the differences in their ages. Whereas Yuudai could be very childish under certain circumstances, when there was a real crisis afoot -- namely, when the honor of his family was in question, or there was real danger to someone he loved -- he rose to the occasion and handled the situation as quickly and efficiently as he needed to. This particular trait of his was what would make him an effective head for the inn one day; perhaps it defied his instinctive reaction, but he had been training himself his entire life for the sole purpose of one day relieving his parents of their burden and carrying the tradition of running the inn, so he was well versed in holding and maintaining his temper when necessary.
Because of this, there was a flicker of disappointment across his face at Jianyu's tone. The gravity of the situation wasn't lost on the other man, he was sure; how could it be, after all? And yet there he was, kicking over papers and acting like an overgrown child instead of addressing the matter at hand. It was disappointing, and given his already low opinion of his new brother, it would make it that much more difficult for Yuudai to extend the olive branch and endeavor to make them family.
"You are acting like a child," He said, mild reproach in his tone. He was shorter and smaller than Jianyu, but his expression was still forbidding, serious; his lips were a thin line, eyebrows slanting mightily over cornflower blue eyes. "Which is the last thing we need right now. Clearly, despite our personal misgivings toward one another, you and I are the only ones in our families capable of acting swiftly and rationally in this case..."
He gritted his teeth, grinding them together a bit as he considered his next words. The urge to snap was strong, not just because of the stress of this moment but because of who was before him, but he forced himself to remain calm. Still, there was acid lacing his tone as he added, "If you would cease throwing your fit, we need to go to the legal offices and ascertain that they are, in fact, married."
He didn't look happy about it. Well, Yuudai rarely looked happy in Jianyu's presence, so that was nothing new.

"I am not throwing a fit," Jianyu said peevishly, casting a dark glance back at Yuudai. "And that condescending tone of yours does little to alleviate my desire to act 'childish,' as you so put it."
He supposed he rather was acting a little silly. Especially since Yuudai was merely standing there calmly, his expression a mix of resignation and disgust - the latter was most certainly for his new "brother," and Jianyu was quite certain his own expression mirrored that sentiment rather well - so it made him feel somewhat stupid to be causing such a scene. After all, he was a Fighter of the Legion - a worthy young man capable of many things, so it did not exactly make sense that he should be the one reacting while Yuudai simply stood there in sullen silence.
"This is ridiculous." Jianyu snapped angrily as he bent down, shuffling the papers back into a relatively neat stack, resisting the heavy urge to kick them again just to irritate the innkeeper. "Why did my Idiot Brother have to elope with your sister of all people? It would have been much easier to deal with had it not been with someone relating to you."
The last part came out a bit more hostile than he had meant it to, but Jianyu's nerves were somewhat frayed. It seemed as if whenever things were going a different way than planned, Koga Yuudai was involved. That was quite maddening, although Jianyu could not help the faint, nagging reminder of the first time he had met Yuudai - which had not been unpleasant.
He shook it off. The Yuudai standing before him was obviously not the same. Clicking his teeth together in frustration, Jianyu said "So what happens if they're not married? What then, brother?"

Watching Jianyu rearrange the pile of papers was enough to make a brief, smug smile flit across his face. It fell away almost instantly, hopefully unseen by the other man; they would need to work together, after all, and provoking one another wasn't going to get them anywhere. The satisfaction he felt quickly died away, however, as Jianyu expressed his vehement displeasure regarding the union of their siblings, and he found resentment stirring and settling in his stomach.
Had he been asked to choose, the Qian family would be one of the last ones he would recommend for marriage prospects for his sisters. Firstly, of course, because it was Jianyu's family, and it seemed that lately everything about his life that irritated him involved Jianyu. Secondly, and arguably more importantly, they were Legion and the Koga family firmly supported the Nobles. It was hard enough to have Ran and his family on the opposite side of the war, and at night when he said his prayers, Yuudai always included the fervent hope that he would never have to face his brother in battle. Though he believed in both the cause that he stood for and the future that he fought for, Ran was his family, of the heart if not blood, and bringing harm to your family defied every truth Yuudai held about life. Family was precious. Family was above all else. Family...
Jianyu was family. As much as he resented it, as much as he wanted to throw his arms in the air and scream that it wasn't fair, it wasn't acceptable, Jianyu was family. And there he was, still throwing his temper around like a fitful child, seeming to take more offense to the fact that Natsuko was his sister than the obvious issue of the elopement. It offended him on a very basic level, because Yuudai was a good person. He was honest and kind, respectful and responsible -- his family, certainly, was more than worthy of Jianyu's respect, and his blatant dislike of the situation was an insult. To Yuudai, there was nothing more important than the people who had raised him, the sisters he had grown up beside; the grandparents who had lovingly tended the inn, raised their children to understand the value of hard work and the love of those who shared their name. His family was important, vital, beautiful.
And Jianyu was standing there muttering about it, about him, as though it left a bad taste in his mouth.
Color left his face by degrees, leaving his cheeks a little whitish, making the scales that rode high on them seem to jump out a bit more. "You should consider yourself lucky to be part of my family."
The single sentence was delivered in a low, soft tone, but it wasn't as calm as it had been; there was anger there, vibrating under the surface, and it was obvious with the set of his shoulders that he had been offended. His eyes, too, had lost the condescending slant to them, were now a little overbright, harder.
His arms were still banded tight around his chest, but he inhaled, exhaled, dropped them to his sides. "You will take care, Jianyu, to not mutter about myself or my own as though the words sour in your mouth before you can speak them. Whatever your misgivings, we are family -- and if we aren't, as I have stated before, we soon enough will be."
He was losing his patience, something he prided himself on. "You need to work on your listening skills, brother. If they are not married, we will locate them and, through our combined efforts, we will force them to marry. I won't have Natsuko's reputation ruined by this, and I won't have our family turned into... some fodder for evening gossip, not anymore than they already would be."
He had lost his cool, though not his temper; he was not shouting, but his voice was shaking, just so, and even a simpleton could see that Yuudai was just as upset as Jianyu, he was simply handling it entirely differently.
And, as it stood, less and less effectively the more time he spent with his new brother.

To be honest, Jianyu had not exactly thought things through. His anger at Junjie's obvious lack of respect for his family - his wonderful, loving, supportive family - that he was letting his personal opinions of Yuudai get in the way of attempting to figure out a logical and rational solution to this particularly nasty predicament. Junjie had shown a complete disregard for his family in eloping with not only a girl of the Koga family, but also of the Noble alliance.
Not that Jianyu was exactly in a place to comment on that. After all, he himself was in a relationship with a Noble. But he had not flaunted that fact in the faces of those who cared for him enough to provide for him, to care and love for him. He had not gone off and eloped with Bataar (Goddess forbid) and he had treated his relationship with the respect it deserved.
For the most part, that was. When they weren't beating each other up. Jianyu waved that thought away, his mind racing. He felt as if his thoughts were colliding with one another, melting and twisting together in one large mass of confusion with one word, one single word prominent:
Why?
Why did Junjie have to be the way he was? Why did his brother have to be so incredibly thoughtless and selfish as to run off with a Noble daughter of the Koga family? Why was he constantly thrown into the path of Koga Yuudai, for that matter? He knew this meant they were family now, he knew that, internally. But what his head and his heart were saying were two different things, two very different things. Jianyu had always been raised to treat family with honor and respect, but what he had not been taught was what to do when thrust into a family that you did not particularly like.
He did not know how to handle the situation. Jianyu scowled. "The words are sour. he said, his voice calm and cool as he walked towards Yuudai slowly, like a large cat stalking its prey. The vehemence in the innkeeper's voice had surprised him, bordering on impressing him (though he would never admit that), but it was obvious Koga Yuudai was close to losing it, just as Jianyu was. "But not because my brother has decided to run off with some Noble. Not because he has decided to marry the sister of Koga Yuudai. That does not concern me."
Jianyu stopped when he was right in front of Yuudai, backing him up against the desk he was leaning against and resting a hand on either side of him, trapping the innkeeper where he stood. His expression was dangerous, his eyes flashing. "No, it is because once again I am reduced to having to spend my time with you, someone who has consistently been a thorn in my side."

On a good day, Yuudai respected others' personal space, but he wasn't necessarily uncomfortable having his own invaded. Even when Bataar smelled his worst, Yuudai had no misgivings about getting as close to him as was necessary, whether it was to tend a wound or force him to strip for the bath; sometimes, proximity was necessary, and the closer he was to someone emotionally, the closer he wanted to be to them physically. With his family, especially, he often expressed himself equally through words and touches; a hand to the shoulder and a brushed kiss across the cheek could be hello or be safe just as effectively as the spoken word.
Being nearly nose-to-nose with Jianyu, then, was not something that made him distinctly uncomfortable; it simply annoyed him. His own eyes narrowed, and had it been possible, he was sure sparks would have been bouncing between their gazes; there was certainly enough heat and temper being generated between the two of them, though it thrummed under the surface, to make it feasible. He resented being cornered in his own room, resented especially that he was shorter than Jianyu. It made it awkward and infuriating to have the brunette Lunarian leaning over him, mostly because Yuudai was forced to thrust his chin out, face tipped up, to meet his gaze.
Had it been anyone else, he might have made a pithy remark, might have simply shoved them aside and moved on. But it wasn't just anyone else: it was Jianyu, and that was enough to make Yuudai stubbornly hold his ground, lips peeling back in a snarl, teeth clenched.
How dare he try to intimidate him in his own home.
How dare he.
He took a deep breath, mouth hinging open for a moment, and raised one hand. Slowly, deliberately, he flattened his palm against Jianyu's chest, feeling the fabric rough against his hand, and he glared. Then, rather than shove him away, he fisted his hand in his clothing, yanked him forward so that Jianyu's forehead smacked sharply into Yuudai's own. Their eyes were mere inches apart, and color had come back into Yuudai's face: not embarrassment, not shyness at being so close to the other man, but honest anger. The pain centered him, too, because it was sharp and brief.
"You," he said, slowly, measuringly, "Are being an insufferable, disrespectful a**. You are in my home, Qian Jianyu, and you have no right -- no right -- to throw your weight around and behave like an uncivilized heathen."
His breath was coming raggedly now, the surest sign that he was close to snapping, that the very edges of his temper were frayed.

Jianyu had never had any qualms about invading people's space before. It had not actually occured to him that people might mind him when he stood nearer, leaned further, moved closer. Part of his mindset was simply that it was not that big of a deal. He was used to the light touches from his parents, the hugs and kisses from his brothers and sisters, the closeness of Bataar, so it did not bother him in the slightest to be standing so close to Yuudai that they were very nearly touching. The tension between them was so strong, so tangible that Jianyu felt if he reached out, he could almost touch it.
For a moment, they just stood there, nose to nose as Jianyu glared down at Yuudai, and Yuudai stared back up at him, his chin jutting out defiantly. Then he felt a warm hand press against his chest, and Jianyu was about to jerk away when Yuudai yanked - hard.
Crack.
"Holy mother of Lunaria - !"
Jianyu let out a string of obscenities, his world spinning as his forehead collided with Yuudai's. The pain was sharp, immediate, and Jianyu felt it reverberating throughout his neck and shoulders. The innkeeper's grip was surprisingly strong, their faces now barely an inch apart, but Jianyu didn't move away, not wanting to give Yuudai the satisfaction. Both of them were breathing heavily, neither one willing to back down.
"I never once said I was going to continue this in your home." he said quietly and reached down, his fingers wrapping around Yuudai's wrist. With a quick jerk he pulled Yuudai's hand away from his chest, stepping back and dragging him across the room. He shoved open the door, ignoring any and all protests from Yuudai, and all but pulled him down the stairs, across the (thankfully) empty hallway, and out the door leading to the back. Once they were outside, Jianyu headed further away, until they were several yards away from the house. Finally he stopped, turning towards Yuudai and releasing his wrist.
"Now we're not in your home anymore." Jianyu said, unlatching the belt at his waist and pulling off his usual armor. "So I have no reason to hold back now, do I?"
