Apothecary The apothecary, while supplying painkillers and sleep aids and the like, is most often used by apprentices to obtain herbs for rituals. The apothecary is low to the ground and is made up of only two rooms. The first, the one customers are allowed into, is the shop itself. Many herbs, spices, and medicines are stored in earthenware jars. Spices are very rare - they are difficult to grow, and many will not grow at all except for in the gardens of powerful mages who also happen to have a green thumb.
The back room is where the rarer, more potent items are kept, as well as where medicines and powders and elixirs are ground up and mixed and bottled. Owner :: Master Aldrasath

Carrying his new book carefully, possessively, Kanesakht kicked on the apothecary door frame, frowning. There were a few questioning hums from inside, along with a disgruntled sigh. A man came forward, older in ears, his scales going dull. He held a mortar and pestle with a half-ground herb inside.
"Yes?" he muttered, eyeing Kanesakht tiredly. "You could've come in, you know, Honorable Council Member."
Kanesakht held up the text. "Didn't want it to get damaged by any weird dusts, Master Aldraseth."
The man didn't blink. "Well? What are you here for?"
"To introduce my new apprentice." Kanesakht motioned down to the ground. "Sekhmet."
"Greeting, Kanesakht-teph Sekhmet," the man said, inclining his head. "I hope you can one day live up to the name of your great mentor." Did he mean that kindly, or...?
Kanesakht smiled, grimly. "She'll probably abandon the city before then - she has been taken in by one of the humans, from above ground."
"Oh, really? Hm. I suppose you are right, Honorable Council Member." Aldraseth inclined his head again. "If that is all...?"
"It is."
"Good day, then, Honorable Council Member. Kanesakht-teph Sekhmet."
"Good day, Master Aldrasath."
The man went back into the shop.
"Now, that was easy. One last stop."
((I keep typing overly long posts that you can't respond to fully! xd Just assume it's one of those "adults talking over a child's head" moments. I'll try harder at the next stop. OH. And feel free to respond to Aldrasath's comments here, if you want. xd ))

Sekhmet frowned at their conversation. She wondered what Kanesakht had done that made him such a "great mentor". Maybe she'd ask him, maybe she wouldn't.
She was, however, getting very tired of his snide remarks. "Not gonna run away," she blurted out, annoyed. Her ears twitched back slightly and her tail lashed. "'M here for a reason, an' 'm not going till 'm finished," she added, the words coming out in a very soft mumble.

He snorted. "Sure. Keep telling yourself that."
And then he headed off through the market to the ritual item shop.

Sekhmet narrowed her eyes and followed him. She bit her tongue to keep from talking back. She wanted to yell at him, get mad, make it clear that she'd had enough of his rebukes. But now was not the time. And she was not about to embaress herself in front of other adults. She'd yell and argue all she wanted when they got back to the house, oh, she would.

Aldrasath was slowly, methodically grinding some sort of herb in the early "morning" light. The shop was technically closed for another half hour, but when Akhetnnami knocked, he set down his work carefully and opened the door.
Seeing her, he bowed low. She bowed back, smiling faintly. "Master Aldrasath," she said, voice soft and respectful.
"Ah, Honorable Council Member," he replied, looking at her. His eyes twinkled slightly. "Such a more welcome face than some of your... coworkers."
"Kanesakht?" She laughed. "He's been by, then, with his apprentice?"
"Yes. And I take it that he," Aldrasath nodded his head towards Shandar, "is yours?"
"That he is. Master Aldrasath, may I introduce to you Shandar?"
Aldrasath eyed the small green Ellundel. "Akhetnnami-teph Shandar," he began, crossing his arms. "You'll find that life with the Honorable Council Member may be strict and harsh, but know that that is the best way for you to learn." Hm, he seemed to be taking a liking to dispensing thoughtful wisdom to young apprentices. Maybe he would be taking an apprentice himself, soon?

Shandar glanced around him at the jars and goods. It reminded him of Amarante's workshop in Hakim's house. His favourite place to sleep. He was so intrigued he almost didn't hear Aldrasath speak. Looking up he gave the man the respect he had learned from Amarante, listening to her talk about herbs and potions.
"Yes sir." He said boldly with a small bow of his head. He knew life with Akhetnnami wouldn't be a barrel of laughs, but she seemed all right so far. Well, apart from interrupting his grooming session. "What are you making?" He asked curiously.

Aldrasath's battered ears perked up a little. Ah, he was already liking this one so much better than Kanesakht's! Of course, that may have had to do with his predisposition towards Akhetnnami. The girl was sensible and polite and didn't kick his door-frame.
"A fever-reducing draught," he explained, fetching the bowl and holding it out for Shandar to see. "Agaworth root mixed with besarshon leaves, at the moment. It will need water and some keraston nectar before it's finished, though."
He tilted his head. "Are you interested in herb work?"
Akhetnnami watched the two, smiling and entering the workshop proper. While the main purpose of the trip had been to introduce the two, she did still have some business. Not much, just an every-day powder for the binding ritual.
"Why were you working in the main room?" she asked, after a moment, curiosity getting to her.
"The shop isn't open yet - I wasn't planning on being disturbed. But I don't mind. Just don't.. break anything."

Shandar hadn't heard of the herbs he spoke of but listened with interest and peered into the bowl. He looked up at the adult Dumyr and nodded, cursing his lack of linguistic knowledge. "Yes, it is interesting and useful." He said eyeing the colours and quantities of the powder inside.
Stepping back a bit he allowed his eyes to rove around the facinating shop once more, once again happy with his agreement to come to the undergrounf city.

"You may have been better off trying for Honorable Council Member Hanukhemetu's apprenticeship, then - he is very well trained in the herbal arts. As it is, Honorable Council Member Akhetnnami is more trained in dedication rituals. Still, if you would like to learn a little about herbs, feel free to come and visit." He nodded to Shandar, then looked for Akhetnnami.
"Are you looking for Egasthorm root powder?" he asked, walking over to her and putting his mortar and pestle down on a countertop again.
"Mm," she ascented. He snagged a bottle of it off of the shelf and brought it over to what was probably the Dumyr equivalent of a cash register. Aldrasath poured a careful amount of the powder onto a small balance, setting it to a certain weight. When the balance swung straight, he moved the small paper holding the powder to a tiny vial and funneled it in.
"To your account, I take it?" he asked as he put a stopper into the bottle.
"Of course." Akhetnnami took the proferred bottle and bowed, backing towards the door. "Come, Shandar. Thank you for your help, Master Aldrasath."
"Good luck with the binding ritual," he said, bowing to the two. "And do come and visit again, Honorable Council Member. Akhetnnami-teph Shandar."
When they were out of the shop, Akhetnnami turned towards another building. "To the item shop... and then the bookstore. Marseth has an apprentice of her own, now."
